Success of the Spring Meeting. DISTINGUISHED PERSONS IN ATTENDANCE — FINE RQUIPAGES—THE CLOSING DAY—SPIRITED RACES ‘YESTERDAY. ‘The spring meeting of the National Jockey Club has been a complete success in every respect. The clouds that towered upon the opening day soon rolled by, and the weather could not have been more propitious. For the last three days the sun in all his splendor looked upon the races, but not with any maddening degree of heat. His rays were tempered by a balmy alr that made every- body pleasant and comfortable. The club has added to its fame and increased its bank account. It has demonstrated the wisdom of the men who claimed that Washington would lberally patron- ize first-class races. The National Club 1s now one of the fixed institutions of the capital, aud, though Dut a young organization, it already ranks with the best of the meeting®places for the blooded Tacers of the country. The daily assemblages at the track this week have comprise’ many of the highest in poittics, the most noted in society end the best fixed financially. The infield ts the place where the ornate of society and the owners of showy turnouts gather. It compares with private Doxcs at the opera. The President's carriage was con- splcuous among the vehicles yesterday, and dur- ing the afternoon a lunch, consisting of cham- pagiie and delicate sandwiches, was dispensed by ts fair occupants. Private Secretary Palllips was the major domo of the lunch basket, and the swells of.the diplomatic corps were particularly gracious to him. He bossed the champagne. At- torney General Brewster's handsome. carriage, drawn by a span of glossy-coated, high-headed horses, has been seen dally at the races. General Brewster, with his white beaver set firmly upon his head, handles the ribbons with a grace and Skill that makes him a practiced horseman. The Biltmore and Ohly railroad, however, is the pop- ular and democratte route to the track. Its station is within a hundred yards of the entrance gate, and for the sake of convenience many who own fhe teams and vehicles go out by train. The rall- Toad officials make ample prov.sion for transpor- tation in comfortable cars and charge only 10 cts. for the round trip. THE MANAGEMENT OF THE JOCKEY CLUB 1s In the hands of active, progressive business men, and their chief object 1s to make It an ate tractive andereditable feature of the capital, They are not seeking to make money for the club, but pro- Pose to invest receipts in adding to Its attractive- ness. The absence of music at the races is nct from any desire to avold expense, but for the most excellent reason that however fhspiriting a brass band might be to the spectators its music would not be appreciated in a proper spirit by the horses, The high-strung thoroughbreds of the race course would break the necks of a few jockeys, and, per- haps, not spare outsiders ff brass music were near them. On running courses music Is never 1atro- duced. THE PRESENT OFFICERS of the club are: President, Col. J. C. McKibbin; Vice presidents, Hon. John 8. Barbour, William M, Galt, Hon. George W. Hooker, Hon. George C. Gor- ham and Major . C. Goodloe; treasurer, Reuben F. Baker; executive committee, Charles Stone, Hallet Kilbourn, Clarence Hall, H. W. Blunt, J. F. Olmstead, Lieut. W. H. Emory, P. H. Christman, ©. C. Green and James § Edwards; secretary, H. D. Mclatyre. Under the present management the policy of the club 1s Mberal and progressive. Of course ail the officers and members are more than GRATIFIED AT THE SUCCESS OF THE MEETING. When a course but two years old cun attract 8,000 or 10,000 of the best people of all classes its Success 18 too well establighed for discussion. During the four days racing all the machinery of the track worke! Ilke clockwork. Once or twice there was delay in starting, but it was when there were large flelds of green horses, and such delays are unavoidable, ASa rule the flelds were got off Promptly ant tn good style. | From 300 to 800 vis tors froin Baltimore were dally at the races and it was their custom to seat themselves in one group on the grandstand. One day COL. THOS. P. .OCHILTRER was one of the judges, and his manly form, dignt- fled carriage and strawberry-blonde mustache at- tracted the attention of the Baltimore ladles. They were exceedingly anxious to know who that gentleman was who so affectionately caressed the horses before they started, and seemed to whisper to them as if exchanging secrets with the anl- mals. Finally, a Washington gentleman over- hearing a Baltimore lady say “Ido. wish I knw who he 1s,” replied, “Madame, that ts one of the most noted men inthe country; that 18 Col. ‘Tom Ochiltree. He {s the only Ainerican, except Geo, Washington, who never told a Ite.” WEARING OF THE GREEN. Several horses bearing names with a flavor of tae #merald isle, such as Bally, Flower of Meath, etc., were winners during the meeting. Yester- day, just after the second race, which was won by Hilirity, a chap was seen to throw a pool ticket down ob the ground with a diszust that showed he had backed the losing horse, as he sald, “there’s another of them— Itigh horses won agin.” YESTERDAY ANOTHER BAD DAY FOR FAVORITES. The favor.tes suffered again yeaterday, Joe Mur- Tay, Helen Wallace, Compensation and Ella War- field, Constantina and Kitty Clark, all being beaten. Throughout the meeting no cause for grumbling, or “kicking,” ast 1s com:nonly termed, has occurred. In every caso the races have been fair and square, and the decistons of all questions Taised have been satisfactory. ‘The first race yesterday was won by Homespun Jn 158g, The second was won by Hilarity, beating Laura Glass, Helen Wallace, Intanta, Keno ant Jim McGowan. Paris mutuals pald $24.15 on Hilarity. ‘The Washington cup was won by Duke of Montalban, beating Ella Wartteld, Compensation, Nettle, Hartford and Hilarity. Parts pools pald $17.15." In the fourth race Topsy beat Prosper, Le Pett Duc, Monk, Ferd Kyte, Buxom, Constantina, Blush Rose and Laura G., in the ‘order named, Paris mutuals paid $16.80. “The last race, over six hurdles, was won by Jim McGowan, beating the favorite, Kitty Clark; Colebrook third. Oscar who was liberally bucked, refused to take the second hurdle. Paris pools pata $23.65. CONTEMPLATED IMPROVEMENTS. It fs the intention of the club to construct a con- venient and ornamental entrance from the rail- way station. It will provide ample roomway for entrance and exit, and will be spanned by a taste- fully constructed arch. Other improvements will de made before the fall meeting. pecia ot WAnTs 10 GET OvT or THE Insane ASYLUY.— Yesterday Chief Justice Cortter had before him the case of W. W. A FROMISE OF AN ABUNDANCE OF EARLY FRUITS— OTHER FEATURES OF THE WEEK. ‘The city markets have been well patronized the past week, and dealers have generally been busy. As the spring advances more country people are in attendance, and bring in the early vegetables and fruits peculiar to the season. Strawberries, cherries and otner early fruits will soon be plenti- ful enough, and cheap. Countrymen say these crops look promising. ‘The flour market remains about the same as last ‘week—gulet, with fair jobbing movement in the rood kinds. Common brands are not much called for. In consequence of the limited receipts of wheat, it is firmer in price. The supplies of corn are light, and the tendency is toa rise, The jobbing rate {s $3.10 per barrel, unshelled. Oats are steady and in demand, as are also tBe mill feeds. Hay and straw of the best kinds sell very readily, and the trade has been brisk for the bestgrades. Dealers state that farm- ers will have to learn that to hiv good prices and meet with quick sales they will have to give more attention to the curing of hay, and preserve It fresh-looking and green. Timothy 1s ruling now $15 and $16 per ton for well cured; good mixed, $11 and $12, and clover, $8 to $10 per ton. Offerings are quite free. THE BUITER TRADE. ‘There fs no new feature in the butter trade. The demand 1s steady, snd sales have been brisk in good grades. The receipts in New York have been Tather scarce, while improved stock of near-by Productions begin to appear. The only trouble seems tobe the great amount of garlic butter, which most people object to. The cows will eat this garlic, and it 1s about the first green thing to start out of the ground. As the season grows later, however, cows are sald to avold it for clover an other grasses. The old stocks of butter are nearly out of the market, It is now mostly sold to bakers for cooking uses. Western butter now begins to show itself some, but in so limited quan- Utles as not to affect prices much. The supply of eggs has not been large, and all arrivals lave been readily caught u Poultry is looking up some. ‘he supply of spring chickens appears to be Increasing. Good large chickens, in good condition, are, however, iimited in quantities and sell high. Many small chickens ate arriving, and the market Is rather overstocked with them. Fresh meats have taken a fresh start in prices while cured meats remain about the same, and sales of the latter are brisk. At wholesale, bect Tanges from 11 to 12 cents per pound. Veal calves and lambs are also high, without any apparent Treason why it 1s so. There is no lack of stock in the country, and the bellef 1s expressed by dealers that this state of things will not continue long. Sugar-cured hams, shoulders, sides and all the whole range of cured meats are as low as usual and trade {s at the same. Dried fruits, of domestic kinds are almost out of the markets, and none but foreign fruits are seen, The same may be said of green fruits. Oranges and lemons pear to be 1h good supply, and at reasonable prices, VEGETABLES. The supply of vegetables keeps up. Potatoes are in good demand, and the farmers are planting freely. The Early Rose and Burbank appear most in demand for seed, and the prospect looks fair for good crop. There is no demand for old beans, Early green beans, peas, cucumbers, tomatoes, squash are arriving’ freely from Florta, and take Precedence of old vegetables to a great extent. ke awed ‘TRANSFERS OF ReaL EsTate—Deeds in fee have been filed as follows:—N.
