Gas Woes of West W: ag te To the Editor of Tae Evextve Stan. ‘Tus Stax shines for all with equal and unvarying lght, the same price, the same brilllancy to-North, South, East and West (Washington). So does not gas, and as this seems an appropriate time to “gas,” will you give me a little of your valuable space to make “a few observations on this inter- esting subject?” First, the Commissioners think, and doubtless with good reason, that $1.75 net ts too much for North, South, and East Washington to pay for gas. We would like to ask what they think of $225 net for West Washington gas? Is our gas 80 much better? If so, we'll take a little more naphtha, or any other cheaper illuminating fluid, to get a reduction of 80 cénts, We believe the gas company here give two reasons for charg- ing more for gas than the Washington company: First, that they have a smaller market to supply, and hence their income 1s not so great for want of consumers. Would that argument he good fn any other trade or profession? Second, that their ex- pense in making gas 1s proportionally greater than that of the Washington company, because they make a better article. Whether our gas is better or not we do not pretend to sayy but we have the opinion of those who know that the Georgetown gas company could make the samo quality ot gas, at a much less cost, if they would adopt the mode or methods and appliances in use elsewhere, If this be 80, are we to pay for thelr “old fogyism2” What we want to suggest 4s, that should the Commissioners determine they have power to grant a charter toa new company, they will refuse such charter unless the new com- any will obligate themselves to supply West Vashington with gas. We will pay $1.75. the price now paid in Washington, without grumbling. West WASHINGTON. —_———— ‘The Courts. COURT IN GENERAL TERM. ‘To-day the applications of H. Randall Webb and W. B.
