Crook: “SAN BERNARDINO SPRINGS,ARIZONA TER, May 3 Adjutant General U.S.A., Washington: Dispatch of 28th inst., from Gen. Sherman, re- ceived. Itis not my intention to violate the con- vention between the two governments. My object in visiting Sonora and Chihuahua was to arrange for co-operation, and, 1h case my troops followed the hostlles into Mexico, to see if I could not se- cure @ liberal interpretation of the terms of the agreoment in regard to the time I could be allowed to remain there. It 1s my Intention to start to- morrow morning in pursuit of the savages, in ac- cordance with the treaty. G80. Croor, Brig. Gen.” At the time of writing this dispatch Gen, Crook Was in the extreme soutneast corner of Arizona Territory,{near the conjunction of Arizona, New Mexico and Mexico, and he purposed following the Indians across the’ border, ‘along the Guadalou range of the Sierra Madre mountains. Krom the point named the Slerra Madre range of mountains extends in @ southeasterly direction, and along these mountains the hostiles are supposed to be making their way. Owing to their familiarity ‘with the mountain fastneases, the task of discov- ering and dislodging the Indians will be attended with difficulty and uncertainty. After conferrin; with General Sherman, Secretary Lincoln decid: that it ts unnecessary at present to telegraph any further instructions to General Crook.
