Quiet negotiations looking to a reunton of the party factions have been going on between the stalwart and independent republican leaders of the Pennsylvania legislature, and it 1s believed ‘at @ basts of compromise has been reached. Senator Cooper, chairman of the regular republ!- can state committee, offered, it 1s said, on behalf of the stalwarts, to give the state convention to meet July llth over entirely to the control of the independents and let them make the nominations for state treasurer and apditor general. This Was acceptable to Senator Stewart, late Independent candidate for governor; but it was urged that for the Independents to openly enter the regular con- vention and make the nominations would be to In- Vite the charge of selling out. To avoid this it Was agreed to secure the homination by the regu- lars of candidates acceptable to the independents, and then, if the latter insist upon a convention, have them endorse the regular nominees, In this wey both fac ions would be brought together in support of one ticket. Both ides are sald to be heartily stok of luternecine strife and anxious for harmony. A NEW CHARITY, In February last a number of the young ladies of the West End organized themselves tnto # so- clety for the purpose of providing a country home during thé summer months for the children of the poor. ‘The young ladies met at the house of one ot their number once a week during Lent, and In that time did most of the necessary sewing for the home, such as hemming sheets and towels and making pillow cases, donations of these articles pavieg been made from time to time. This ine tended charity, which certainly should commend ltself to every one, became known among the friends of tho ninéteen young ladies who began the enterprise, an4 from’ time to time sums of money, large and stoall, contributed until the fund amounted to $200; but by earerul calculation they found that the amount necessary for the support of the house for four months, from the 15th of June until the 15th of September, will be above $700. This will cover the ‘rent and all necessary expenses for the main- tenance of 92 children, The young ladies then deterinined to get up a concert. which took place on (he 5th of April, and was very successful, Tho rooms in which the concert took place were lb- erally offered to them, and the performers most kindly gave thelr talented services; so that the expenses were comparatively few. ‘By this con- cert $106 Was cleared. At this time, the first of May, $409 are In hand, ‘The house has been rented, and 1s beautitully located on the Plerce’s mill Toad, Just above Rock creek, and the young ladies hope to open tt on the 15th of June under the charge of | a ‘competent person. ‘The Work, which js non-sectarian, —_will be sitilar to that of St. John’s Gutld In New York, and to the “fresh alr fund” Inaugurated by the New York Evening Post, Jt 1s hoped that more will come forward aud joly the number of those who haye already contributed to this beautiful charity. Children will be taken from among the poorest, and kept a week at a Ume,with an abund- ance of good food, and, ir gick, medical attendances wil! be provided ‘for them, without regard to the greed or condition in lite of their relatives.
