The plans for the proposed new bulldtng for the Columbian University, at the corner of 15th and H streets, have been completed by the architect, Mr. W. M. Poindexter. The contemplated structure will present a handsome and elegant appearance, the style of architecture being simple, yet rich in effect. It will be four stories in height, with a flat roof. The main entrance will bein the 15th street front, which extends 121 feet, with 65 feet on H street. There will be an L running back from 15th street 47 by 90 feet. In the L will be lo- caved all the laboratories and chemtcals, separate and distinct trom the main building. ‘The treat- ment of the front will be simple, the prevailing feature beng the large openings," There will be & central projection 27 feet wide, terminating with & pediment. At the corners ‘there will be two orioles on the third floor. ‘The outside walls will be built tn red bricks with terra-cotta trimmin; The prine!pal lecture room 1s that for the law de- partment, 45 by 60 feet, and running through two stories. It will have a’ seating capacity for $00 on the floor and 180 In the galleries, with ample aisles andexits. The building ts espectally designed for sclentific purposes, and one-third of Jts apace will be fitted up for the chemical and assay depart- ments. The estimated cost ts $80,000. Its erection will be begun next month. A HANDSOME IMPROVEMENT ON CAPITOL HILL. Mr. M. G. Copeland, the well-known awning maker, will shortly begin the erection of a fine residence on part of the Hitz property, which he has recently purchased, on Pennéylvania avenue, between 5th and 6th streeta. The house Will have a front of thirty-three feet and adepth of forty- five; will be two storles and basement in height and’ have half mansard roof. There will be a tower on one side of front, which will have a high pointed roof, which, as Well as the mansard, will be covered ‘with red roofing tiles; on thé other side will be a corresponding projection, having gable with ornamental terra-cotta panel. The front will be of pressed brick, have brick cornice, and will be moderately ornamented with blue stone, brown brick and terra cotta tiler. A veranda will’ extend partly across front. The hall, being in the center of the house, will extend back to a square, in which will be’ a handsome stair case; over this will be askylight of colored lass. ‘The interior Anish will be of spectal design. he heating will be by steam or hot water. Situ- ated as it will be, on one of the prettiest building sites on the hiil, it will be one of the most attract ive houses in that section of the city. T. F. Schnel- der Is the architect. OTHER BUILDINGR. Afine residence for Major Bates, on the corner of 18th and N streets, will be begun next month. It wilt have a frontage of 65 feet on 18th street and 30 feet on N. It will be three stories in height, with a high-pitched roof, A corner tower runs up the" entire helght of the building. ‘The main en- trance, on 18th street, will be through a central pavilion. ‘The front door openg Into a wide hall, which runs back the depth of the house, and at the opposite end 1s the staircase. The rooms open irom the hall on each side. ‘The architect, Mr. W. M. Poindexter, has Intro.luced a rather novel fea- ture by having the entrance on the side, instead the end of a lot of that depth. : Mr. Charles Kennedy has commenced the erec- tion of a handsome three-story house on New Jer- sey avenue, near the corner of B street, in the rear of is present residence. The cellar, which ex- tends under the entire honse, will have battered @ walls. There will bea three-story Queen ne bay window on the southwest corner, which Will afford a fine view of the Capitol building and rounds, The entrance will be on the side, and the hall will ve 10x12 feet, finished tn natural woods. The plumbing is to be done on the most approved principles. ‘The erection of a Nandsome residence on the north side of K street, between 16th and 17th, Will be begun shortly for Miss Edes.
