The investigation ordered by Secretary Folger of charges of frauds perpetrated in the construc- tion of the extension of the Boston post office has, according to the Boston Herald, elicited testimony to the effect that the government has been shame- lessly robbed. Men hired as common laborers at $.and $8 per week have been charged to the gov- ernment ag skilled labor at $3.50 and $4.50 per day. Caltil, foreman of laborers, testified that large quantities of lum- ber were sent from the post office extension to the residence of Mr. Hill, the father of Supervising Architect HIN, in Malden. Dr. Alfred Holmead, whose serious illness has been noted in Tae Stax, died this after- ncon,a “few minutes after two o'clock, at his home in South Was}ington. Dr.Holmead was born near Rock Creek church,in 1810. his father, Anthony Holmead, having been one of the original settlers of this city. He was educated at the Columbian college, and studied medicine,and practised at the almshouse from 1829 to 1839, when Dr. Holmead removed to Baltimore, In 1832 he studied for the ministry under the lato Bishop John Johns, and after his ordination was called to the cure of 8t. James P. E ehurch, Baltimore county, Md. Subsequently he taught School at Ellicott City, and built church there. After serving as rector in Winchester he came to this city and for many years continued his ministrations here, having bullt Grace P. E. church at his own expense. He officiated in this chureh for 27 years, until compelled to abandon his ministerial duties by fafling health. Dr. Holmead was held in the greatest esteem and his death will be sincerely mourned.
