ACTION OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF COLUMBIA HOSPITAL. At & spectal meeting of the board of directors of Columbia Hospital, held last evening, the follow- ing resolutions were unanimously adopted: Resolved, By the doard of directors of the Colum- bia Hospital for Women and Lying-in Asylum, {hat We place upon our records our expression of the great logs this institution has met in the death of Surgeon General Joseph K. Barnes. He was in Teallty {ts founder, having organized its first work and provided for its growth, amid the heavy official duties which came upon hith during the war; and at the time of his death he was the only one remaining of the original incorporators. Through the whole existence of the hospital his zealous interest and wise counsels have been a strength to it. To this, our grateful recognition of what we owe him, an of what we lose in him, as a director of this hoap!- tal, we add the record of our very high esteem for him personally, as a dear friend, and as one who loved and labored for the good of others. Resolved, That_a copy of the record, duly at- tested, be sent, with assurance of our deep sym- pathy, to his family. Resolved, That the board has but this moment heard with deep regret of the decease of another of its valuable members, Dr. Noble Young. Dr. Young was a sterling friend to the tnsticution, and by his wise counsel and zeal did much to pro- mote its eMctency. Resolved, That a copy of this resolution, duly. attested, be sent to his family, with assurance of our warmest sympathy. A true copy—Test: WILLIAM PARET, President Board of Directors. Cuas. H. Craaty, Secretary. —— ee Not the Handsome Thing. ‘To the Editor of the Evestna Star: Explain, if you can, what the object of the han- som cab 1s? It 1s generally understood that they |. Tun in opposition to the hackney coaches, Itis a well-known fact that one can take a hansom and go to any part of the city for twenty-five canta; that you can employ them at seventy-five cents per hour. Now, If such 1s the case, why should they tack on an extra price to take one home from the theater? The writer of this article wanted a hansom last night to take himself and wife home from Ford’s Theater. He was charged seventy cents, thougn the distance was only to 10th and O streets. He declined to pay that sum, because he thought it was evidently a desire to take advan- tage Of the occasion. He alterwaris rode home in a hackney coach for fifty cents. He saw at least six hansoms and as many herdic cabs go away from the theater without passengers, presumably because they demanded more than’ their estab- Ushed rates, ‘These new vehicles are becoming Very popular here, and wili b: well patronized if they will only adhére to their advertised rates. ee ee Washington Markets—fetail Prices.
