Ata special meeting of the Board of Public School Trustees, last evening, the Were opened by reading the following brief com- munication from Mr. Birney, the prealdent of the board, who was absent: “Gentlemen:—I resign the office of president of the board.” The resigna- tion was accepted by a unanimous vote, and Mr. B. H. Warner was elected to fill the vacancy. Mr. Warner, in assuring the chatr, stated that when- ever he found himself in a decided minority, in such policy as he should adopt he would follow example of his predecessor and promptly resign. CONCERNING TEACHERSHIPS. Applications for teachers’ positions from the fol- lowing persons were filed: J. H. Dunbar, Mary B. Cameron, Gertrude C. C. Skeel, Adelaide J. Davis, Harriet Foster, Alberta K. Willlams and Clara'E. Ellis. The committee on teachers re- ported the following assignments, changes, &c., which were approved, the report of the committee opted? Miss Adelaide J. Davie, t0. be acting teacher in the second division, and to be assigned to the sixth grade, vice Miss’ M. E. Long- fellow, retired; Miss Martha R.McCauslen, teacher in thé second division, to be assizned to the second grade; for principal of the buliding on 6th . between B and C northeast, Miss Isabella S. Wheeler, The committee also reported favora- biy upon the recommendation of Superintendent + Wilson, that the children in the public schools _be allowed to contribute to tne Longfellow memorial rund. ‘THE TEACHERS’ EXAMINATIONS. Messrs. Warner and Baum, to whom was re- cently referred Mr. Birney’s minority report from the committee on teachers, respecting the examl- nations of teachers, for the purpose of investigat- ing the truth of certain allegations theretn con tained, made a report, which was adopted. ‘This Teport’ recommended’ the employment of Miss Chadwick as teacher until the next semi-annual exatnination, as satisfactory evidence of her phys- ical inability’ to undergo the last examination had been furnished the committee. The investiga- tions of the committee, the report safd, convinced them that heretofore the rules governing examt- hattons of teachers had been strictly enforced, and not departed from except in cases of physical dis- ability certifled to bya physician. ‘They there- fore cannot verify the statement contained In the minority report “that there are numerous prece- dents for indulgence to acting teachers who have not appeared at the examination or failed to pass it” A resolution offered by Mr. Lovejoy was adopted setting torth that the employment of Miss M. E. Longfellow as a temporary teacher, after she had become ineligible by declining to appear before the committee on examinations, was !ll-advised, and that “without intending to make the action @ precedent, but_on the contrary condemning the action of the local committee, we vote to pay Miss Longfellow, because she actuaily performed the services required of her as a teacher.” The nomination of Miss Suste -A. Merrick as a teacher In the second division was approved. PROPOSED REORGANIZATION OF LOCAL COMMITTEES. Mr. Baum offered a resolution reorganizing the local committees, the only change being that Mr. Birney, under the resolution, would be transferred from the second to the sixth division, and Mr. W \rner from the sixth to the second. Mr. Worm ley objected, and intimated that his place un the board would be filled by another before the next meeting. Upon his suggestion the resolution was lald over for future consideration. —_>—__ Prize Fight on Analostan Island. THREE RQUNDS FOUGHT—ONE OF THE COMBATANTS DISAB! ‘De A prize fight between George Kessler, who welghs about 170 pounds, and Ben J. Willlams, who Welghs 1833 pounds, came off yesterday on Ana- lostan island, and was witnessed by between sev- enty-tive and one hundred persons, mostly dlers and loungers of “Foggy Bottom,” in the old first ward, in which the combatants reside. Forgy Bottom skirts the river front on the Washington side, running from K street bridge towards ob- servatory hill and Easby’s wharf. The diMficulty between the contestants was about an overcoat which Wiillams accused Kessler of stealing. This engendered considerable bad feeling, and finally they agreed to settle it by this fight.’ Some sixty or more spectators got over to the island on the ice and a small boat to cross the channel, while others walked around by the aqueduct bridge to the Virginia shore and crossed over the causeway. ‘The flight commenced between 11 and_12 o'clock, and only three rounds were fought. During the first round Willtams received a Diow over the right which raised a knot, but did not blacken the eye. The second round was well contested, and lasted for some time, each getting about equally punished. On the third round Kessler was dis- abied by striking Williams a powerful blow on the shoulder and putting three of big fingers out of Joint, which ended the fight in Williams’ favor. It took place in the old pavilion of Analostan island. It is probable that Judge Snell may have some- thing to do about it. ——_—___ SAVAGE AssaULt on A HUsBAND.—Wm.
