A VISIT TO THE FISH PALACE CAR OF THE U. 8. FISH COMMISSION—HOW THE FISH ARE DISTRIBUTED AND WHERE THEY Go. A palace car filled with live fish, and traveling over the country distributing its cargo at different points, has within the past few years been such a familiar paragraph in the newspapers that it no longer excites the Interest which the importance ot the undertaking, both in its scope and its Tesults, 80 fully justifies, That young fish can be 80 transported tn immense numbers 1s almost a daily experience aow, although it has not been very long since its feasibility was doubted. Time and distance seem to make no difference. One of the palace cars belonging to the U. 8. fish com- mission started Wednesday evening for California Fela Passenger list of young numbering THE FISH PALACE CAR, The car in its appearance and to a large extent in its internal arrangements resembles a modern sleeping@ar. ‘There ate the compartments at each end. Inthe ofe compartment is what may be called the office of the superintendent, Mr. G. Hi. H. Moore. Here sa table fixed between two seats, with a hanging lamp above. ‘The space above the two Ice tanks, which are bulit up on each Side of the passage-way, and are used when neces- Sary to cool the air that passes through the fish- tanks in the car, 1s utilized for pigeon holes where the stationary and the books are kept. The com- partment at the other end 1s used for a kitchen and here the colored cook, Mr. Dandridge, reigns supreme, and he is a very important member of the party during the time spent on the road. The central part of the car has an aisle runniag through the center, and in place of the seats on each side are wide wooden ledgeg about three feet high, in which are placed the tin fish tanks. Berths Uke those in sleeping cars are along the side for the use of the superintendent and his assistants, Messrs. Jas. Carswell and F. L. Donnelly. The dining table 1s placed in the aisle, with seats in the ledges. ACCOMMODATIONS FOR THE FISH. The human passengers as well as the fish live onthe car. The fish are not placed in the tank3 filled with water, as the motion of the train would ash the water about and destroy many lives among the young passengers, Instead about twenty fish are placed in galion tin pails and these palls ‘are put in the tanks, and then the latter ed with water. C, WILLARD, —EE JUDGE SNELL’S WARNING TO PoLIca CouRT LOAFERS AND “Case BROKERS.”—This morning, in the Police Court, sue Snell stated that his attention has been oalled fo the obstruction of the sidewalk in front of the court by crowds who con- gregate there when the prisoners are being deliv- @red and carried away. -He sald these people gen- erally have no personal interest in the prisoners, but are attracted through a vulgar curiosity. He stated that he wanted the officer on duty at the court to arrest such persons, snd they would be summarily disposed of when brought before the court. “I heartily agree with your honor in this matter,” said Prosecuting Attorney Moore. “There are also « large number of ‘case brokers’ who are on hand early every morning and monopolize the front of the court.” ‘They will be disposed of in the same way if brought in,” replied the court. A Sram reporter inquired of Mr. Moore what he meant by the term “case brokers,” and he sald he meant the men who are empleyed by lawyers to hunt up cases forthem, principally among the poor colored le who have to come before the co art, and which is a mighty low plece of business, —_-__ ‘WARRANTS IssUED AGAINST WHOLESALE LIQUOR (seg cae bat SELLING BY T2# GLass,— e proprietors of the “stors-ympe houses” re- ceived @ surprise yesterdsy from License Agent Raff, Private Carter and Sealer of Weights and Measures Small, ‘vhese dealers have a license to sell iquezs m quantities not less than a pint.
