(Baitigore American.) Messrs. Editors: Ieeldom appear publicly in print, but the facts con- nected with my experience which follow are eo strik- ing, and bear so closely upon ths experience of others, that I xentureto reproduce them entire: In the month of September, 1879, I was practicing mediicne in New Orleans. The summer had been ex- ceasively hot and everybody was complaining of being exhausted and fegliug tired. It was not an unfrequent occurrence to have patients ask for something to relieve this weary sensation, ana that I'should also partake of the same universal lassitude or weakness, did not alarm mo. I supposed that over-work and exposure had pro- duced a temporary physical prostration: therefore I made atrip to St. Paul, Minn., thinking that a rest of 3 few weeks in @ cooler climate would soon reinvig- orate me. Little did I dream, however, what was instore forme. After setting settled inmy new quar- ters I tock a short walk every day, and patiently awaited » return of strength, but in spiteof all my efforts I reemed to be loring strength; and even any slight exercise became laborious and tiresome, Daring this time Ihad frequent dull aching pains in my head, and through my beck and hips, occasional shooting Pains in various parts of the body, with soreness, short- ness of breath and palpitation of the heart. My fect and bands would be like ice one day, and burn with heat the next. I had no desire for food, and what I did eat distressed me; my sleep became disturbed with the frequent desire to urinate. The quantity of fluid passed would at one time be small and at another quite pro- fuse. Then for days I would be verfectly free from this desire and nothing seemed to be the matter; neverthe- less my debility gradually increased. My eyelids were puffed out, my bowels were alternate'y torpid and too active, the urine would be clear some days, on others it would be of high color and deposit a brick-dust sedi- Ment, and at still others there would be a whitish ap- pearance anda thin greasy scum would rise to the top. ‘The pains in my head, back, chest, joints, bowels and bones were horrible in the extreme. I went in vain from place to place and consulted the best medical au- thorities the country affords; I would have a chill one day anda burning fever the next. I suffered excruci- atingly with a numbueas of my feet and hands, and at the base of the brain and between my shoulders; at times my limbs and body would bloat, and physicians said I was sufiering from the dropsy and could not re- cover. How I could be so blind to the terrible trouble that was devouring me, I do not know; but there are thou- sands to-day who are suffering from the same cause and are as ignorant of its nature as Twas. My skin was the color of marble at one time, and then again it would be like saffron, and this terrible restlessness, and I micht say wildness, was followed by a dull, heavy, drowsy sensation. I was wasted to a mero skeleton, except when the dropaical bloat occurred. I tried a!l the cele- brated mineral waters of this country and Europe; all ‘kinds of medicine and all kinds of doctors. Still no help came, lay atiny hotel in Philadelphia, where 1 was temporarily eojourning, given up to die by friends and. physicians alike, when there providentially came into my hands a little pamphlet which I carefully read, and from which I got a view of my real con- dition, which no other agency had revealed. Acting op its advice, I had my water analyzed at once, and, tomy surprise, albumen and tube casts were found in lance Quantities. A skillful physician was sent tor and a prised of the fact. He sald I had Bright's Disease, and that death was certain. My friends impottuned me to take a remedy which had won a great reputation for the cure of all forms of kidney diseases, and I therefore laid aside my prejudice and commenced its ure. At first my stomach rejected it, and I had to use small quantities; but after the first five days my stomach re- tained full doses. ‘This was one year aco last October, and my tmprovement was rapid ard permanent. Ihave Texaincd 50 of the 65 pounds of flesh I lost during my ilness, and I feel as well to-day as I ever did, and Ican unreservedly state that my life was saved by Warner's Safe Kidney and Liver Cure, the remedy I used. It may seem strange that I, being a physician and an €x-army surgeon. did not have the water analyzed be- fore; but such is the fact. I had the symptoms of every other disease, and Idid not suspect that my kidneys were in the least particu'ar out of order; and here is Just where I was in the greatest danger, and where most people who read this article are in danger. I find that Tam only one of thousands who are suffering from kid- ney disorders, which, neglected, surely terminate in Bright's disease. I also know that physicians may treat these disorders for -months without knowing clearly what the trouble is, and even afier ascertaining re cause be unable to prevent it. When death, how- ever, finally overtakes the helpless victim they dinguise its real cause, attributing it to heart diseass, convul- sions, apoplexy, vertigo, paralysis, «pinal meningitis, blood and uremic poisoning, ete., etc. Words, of course, fail to express my thanks to H. H. Warner & Oo. of Rochester, N.Y.,for giving the wor'd such aneeded and certain specific as the Sefe Kidney and Liver Cure, but such as they are I gladly give them; while to the thousands to whom I have lectured upon the laws of heaith and hygiene I comifend this letter most cordially, and warn them to beware of the insidious nature of a disease over which physicians confers they have no control, and which, in one form or another, is carrying more people to untimely graves than any other malady. J. M. PORTER, M.D. Baltimore, Ma., 94 Saratoxa street. mt A od axvany Boou IN CLOTHIN @. By the first of the year it is supposed that every one has laid in the winter's stock of Clothing; but experi- ence has taught us that there in always a ood trade if inducements are offered to buyers. We intend offering those inducements. It is our settied policy to never carry over goods. Other places make a business of car- rying old stock over, but we cannot. We haven't the room to store it, and don’t care to be bothered frighten- ing the summer moths out of it. We have in January 8 stock big enough for November. We have reduced prices on every garment in our stock to such low figures that will certainly seil them. We will not carry any soods over till next season, therefore we are going to Loom Clothing, and we know we mutt sell amazingly low to doit. We can afford to sell at a loas, because we toust have the cach for spring trade After the present stock is exhausted prices will be higher: ro it will be an excellent investment to buy now. Suits and Overcoats that were a few weeks ago selling at $15, $20, $25, $30, and $35, are now down to $10, $15, $18, $22, and $25. Pants we sacrifice regardless of coat. The Di HOUSE PROCERDINGS CONTINUED FROM THE FIRST EDITION. Mr. Murch, of Matne, off-red an amendment to reduce the price to be pald for street lighting from $25 08% perlamp, He favored the we of ele {nicity as cheaper than gas, and criticised the sy tem of lighting When the inoon Is not expected. He sald the gas furnished in unis city was of a very inferior quality. Mr. Miller, of Texas, also favored tho lighting of the streets by electricit Mr. Hiscock satd he 0; because he did not believe ‘that the government should enter upon a system of experiments. ‘The amendment to reduce the street lam s from $25 to £20 was lost by yeas 58, nays TL Mr. Klotz moved to fix the price at #22 Instead of $25. He charged that tn the Forty-sixth Con- gress the gas company controlted Congress; that an officer of the gas company was an officer of the House of Representatives, and the House aid not have power enough to remove him. He sald Mr. Bulley, the chief clerk of the House, was kept in his piace to keep the gas company advised of what Was going on !n Congress. ‘The gas company to- ~ had three-quarters of a million surplus i the reasury.. Mr. Hiscock sald if he knew holt as much as Mr. Klotz affected know, he Would move an inves- Uyation, Mr. Murch safd in tne last Congress he aid in- troduce a resolution for an invesization of the gas company, but from that dy to this he had never had an Opportunity to be heard. Mr, Klotz said there was complete amity between the gas company and the gas inspector. He re- peated that certain stockholders of the gas com- pany had made arrangements, or tried to, with certain members of Congress. Mr. Kloiz’s amendment reducing the amount for each lamp to #22 was adopted. WHAT THE CITIZENS’ COMMITTEE ARE DOING. The chairman of the citizems’ committee, Mr. J. W. Thompson, was at the jail yesterday, and had an interview with the two monte men, O'Leary and Murphy, and obtained some additional facts Telative toa case which the committee are pre- Paring to be submitted to the District Commis- stoners, They have secured such a collection of facts In one case which are well substantiated that it is their intention to report it to the grand jury for their action. This 1s, however, only one of the many cases which have come totheir attention, and has nothing to do with the other matters which they have already submitted and intend to submit to the District Commissioners. Another case of robbery was recently reported to the committee by the daughters of the late Prof. Henry. Their residence, near the 14th street circle, was entered last summer and a quantity of silverware was taken. which was very valuable on account of associations. M’ DEVITT AND MONROE'S CHECES. Yesterday, Mr. Pearsall, cashier of the Citizens’ National bank, went to the Columbia building and stated several facts to Commissioner West.
