TERRIBLE ENCOUNTER WITH A DEADLY BLOW- ING VIPER IN A DARK ROOM. A terrible soe fl befel Doctor Paulhamus and his lovely am egy daugiver Eleanor, Tuesday Pisco in Williamsourg, Pa. It seems that a couple of weeks ago two tramps captured a pair of enormous repiiles, which the doctor pronounced to be of that ey 4 species known as “blowing viper.” The doctor, having a desire to contribuie scope that would commend itself from this district, purchased the reptiles, intending to forward them to the Zoological Gardeas in Philadelphia. ——_ their transportation the Snakes were placed in a large glass jar, tue op being carefully secured by a covering of wire gauze. The jar was then placed ou elevated bracket in a remote corner of ¢ doctor's office. Last evening the doctor and iis daughier were returning from a visit to the ccuutry, aud the doctor having occasion to make up a prescription they both enterea his oflice, the doctor ein a lamp. Dow c: mes the terrible denouement, A z owl swept in through the transom above the dvor, and flew with the speed of an arr. agvinst the lamp, Knocking it over and s tering the oi] ard broken glass in every di tion. The bird s-emed trautic, flying ant dushing in every die tion, while 4 geveral crash of botles and glasses was heard on every side. Meanwhile the doctor had it another match, but just in time to receive his daughter, who sprang with a wild ery to his arms; in the darkness he gathered his dar- ling w his arms, and in a momeut realized the situation. The owl had dislodged the jar from the bracket, and the vipers were at large. Speedily he groped his way, calling loudly for help, which, the hour belng iate, was slow to put in an appearance. ene | seemed slow, but scarcely five minutes elapse: until full a dozen ladies and brave men were on the spot. No living hand can indite the horrors of the next’ few minutes. Miss Eleanor, who had been insensible since she sprang to her father’s arms, was now being cared for by the ladies, when one simultaneous shriek almost froze the blood and paralyzed each nerve—yet not ali! It was Thomas Lutz's hand that seized the glittering reptile by the neck and choked its fearful fangs apart. It had bitten the lady midway be- tween the arkle and the knee, She was now carried immediately to her hi me, where every known antidote for po sen was administered by her frantic fathe >, but all to no avail, She clock this morning. After or the poor unfortunate young lady home, one of the men, knowing there had been tw sbakes, returned to the office and soon dis- atched the other. Au examination showed its two large fangs missing. This led to the conjecture that possibly the Doctor had been bitten. A hasty retura and close examination resulted in finding the fangs in the thick "Ss bovis, Who, bein: leather of the Doctor's alarmed for his daughte: est knowledge of being struck. The corpse of the young lady has swolien to enormous di- mensions, while her complexion is inharmony with the spots and general coluring of the snake The ene of the snakes measurell four and a half feet, the smaller four feet. They are pronounced by our old people the largest of the species. It was the shorter one of the two that bit the young lady.—[ Aitoona (La.) Tribune, Sept. 12° Camp Life Among Refugees. The neighborhood of Memphis, for miles around, is dotted with the camps of refugees who had no money to go further, and are fed by charity. United States army tents were ealeney as far as possible, but hundreds are living in rude huts, and ye have no shelter except open sheds. Camp Jo Williams, four and a half miles south of the city, is the larg- est of these settlements. Its inhabitants car- ried the scourge that they sought to flee from, and the physicians are trying in vain to stamp it out. All cases are sent to an impro- vised hospital. Dr. Nall, the physician in charge, was ai ed, and he had so ex- hausted himself with work that the disease went hard with him; but he lived through it, and is again at his post. A Camp Jo Wil: liams resident, writing to a commercial firm in Louisville, says: “Women in child birth, surrounded by little ones, quartered in tents, see one by one pass from thelr sight on to the hospital, thence to the grave. the babe is born, yellow as gold; the mother on aa a few days, and thea she, the last of the household, is put under ground, We save no women who are at- tacked.” In this camp, it seems, the fever is invariably fatal in its effect on women, killing them speedily and surely. Here is an illustra- tion by the Same writer: A woman and her two daughters, =e liand 16, arrived from ed and applied to him for quarters. He saw in the girls unmistakable =.gas of the fe- ver—a beeen flush of the face, glassy eyes, anda slight puffiness of the skin; but they sai: that they felt unusually well. He gave them a tent next hisown. On the following morn- ing ney were delirious, and before night were dead. This is the leiter’s postseript: “Just now I toted a fellow to a tent. near the ee tal. I bave had men hunting himall day. He has been dodging us. He swears nothing is the matter wich him. His pulse is 1 temperature 106. He is literally burn up. He will be dead by noon to-morrow.” Late news from this camp was of a removal, to get away from the infection if possible. A GIRL AccusIne HER OWN FATHER OF MURDER.—The trial of Jesse . Billings, the wealthy farmer of Ballston Spa, N. Y , who is charged with murdering his wife—having shot at her through an open window, near which she was siiting—is now progressing, and is causing a great sensation. On Friday Jeunie Billings, a daughter of the deceased, 19 years old, was put on the witness stand as a witness against the father. She testified that he had abused her mother shamefully, who was con- Unually afraid he would take her life; that he had whipped her mother and twice a‘tempted to kill her, and that she (the daughter) accused him on the vight of the murder of committing it. She was greatly confused by the cross-ex amination, during which she wept copiously, and finally swooned away in the arms of the district attorney. She was conveyed into an adjoining apariment and seized with hyste- ria, during which blood flowed from her head, Probably from over excliement. A physician Was summoned, and the young lady was placed in a carriage, to which she was carried seem- ingly insensible, by her relatives and conveyed to the hotel. COLORED LYNCHERS IN LOUISIANA.—A dif eulty occurred Saturday night in the store of Chancelet Chaix, at St. Charles Court House, La., between Charlie Baptiste (colored) and Mr. Valcour St. Martin, ex-deputy sheriif, and son of N. 0. St. Martin, district attorney pro tem., which resulted in Baptiste being stabbed and instantly killed by St. Martin. ‘The latter was arrested and lodged in jail. Durizg the night a mob of colored people, variously estimated at from one to two hun- dred, broke open the jail, took the prisoner therefrom and literally riddled him with bul- lets beyond all recognition. It is supposed that he received the contents of no less than fifty guns. 80 he Memphis TRAGEDY IN PHILADELPHIA. — Saturda) ae a distu.bance took place in Philadel- hia, in which a young man named John ardiner jo8t his lost his life.
