When the hearing in the Dickson case was re- sumed in the Police Court this morning, W. K. Brown, a member of the late star route jury, was called to the stand. His statement in regard to the reading of the paper in the Jury room was the Same as the others, and the witness was dis- inissed without cross-examination. ‘ME. DRIVER'S ACCOUNT OF THE INTERVIEW. Mr. George W. Driver then took the stand and stated he had lived in this city 20 years. He knew the defendant intimately. He knew Mr. Bowen a8 @ casual acquaintance for s>ven or eight years. The witness remembered Bowen's testimony as to What occurred there on the evening of August 23. The witness then gave an account of what hap- pened. He said that he was sitting at the table with Dickson when Rowen came 1u and the two engaged in converstation In tones he did not hear. Heobserved that Dickson tarned trom m im insome surprise and said, “What do you take me for You are mistaken.” ‘Then Bowen said, “Perhaps Tam.” At this juncture Cameron came in and Bowen got up and talked with him a very few moments, and then coming back, he excused’ himself and they Went out ther. About an hour alter tha he saw Dicksen seated in the garden, with Boven near him Later in the evening, In going through the balcony, be saw Dickson and Bowen 8 ated ata table. ven asked witness to join him in a bottle of wine, which he did. While seated there Bowen again alluded toa desire to talk with Dickson, and he left. The witness never saw Dickson and’ Bowen together in the sinall room. He fixed the date of August 23d by the fact that Bowen and Hoover were to leave that night. Since July these two had constantly been at his place, together with Mr. Satterlee, a friend of Mr. Hoover. In Auzust Bowen went to Long Branch Wo see the Attorney General. . Mr. Wells sald that the Witness did not know ft from his own knowledge. Mr. Cuppy thought that {t was immaterial Mr. Weils responded that it made ° A GREAT DEAL OF DIFFERENCE whether some one lied, and told the witness, or whether the witness knew it of his own knowl- edge. The witness said that he was s0 informed. He sald that there wasa telegraphic dispatch received trom there, and Mr. Wells said that the dispatch Was sent froza Jersey City. From the time Bowen returned, which was about the 19th, he constantly inquired for Mr. Dickson, and was frequent in such inquiries. On the night of Au- gust 221 Bowen the remark to him of the re- semblance spoken of between himself and Dick- son. “Physical resemblance, you mean,” put in Mr. Cappy “not moral, I hope.” “Well, I dou't know about that,” said Mr. eis. Bowen asked him WHAT KIND OF A MAN DICKSON Was, and the witness was surprised, as he supposed that Bowen was well acquainted with Dickson. He then wenton to say that there was a deal cf money in the star route case; that the Attorney General was especially interested in securing @ conviction. He went on to say that Dickson was a man of superior intelligence and could control the jury, and that there was $25,000in it The Attorney General was determined to secure a,cun- viction, The witness remarked that it was DANGEROUS BUSINESS, and Bowen said it was not, that the money could be placed in his (witness) hands. The witness ‘sald he would have nothing todo with it. Later in the evening Bowen again met witness and re- newed the conversation, speaking of the import- ance of Dickson in this case, Bowen showed bim his commission and the letter from Tid- ball The witness said that Bowen in his testimony had mixed him up with and that this conversation Bowen swore with Dickson on the 281. Rowen also told him that bis appointment was only intended to give him a pleasure trip; that he and Cameron were golng in a special car, and he invited witness ph dige On the 234 he met Mr. Dickson on 415 street and Mr. Dickson told him that his tamity ‘was out of town. ‘The court ruled out the conversstion, with the exception of the part that he aszed Mr. Dickson to dine with him on the evening of Aurust 31. On his return to bis place, which was after 4 o'clock in the he met Bowen, who inquired for Dickson.
