After the distribution of premiums. Mr. Wight, the principal r some rosewood speech by school, and a response b iia as ei “The Free Bridge Question.” To the Editor of Tae NING STAR? An article with the above heading in THE Sran of ast Thursday informs us that there are still obstructions in the way of a free bridge across the Potomac at Georgetown. After ail that has been done by the courts to settle the question of ownership in the piers upoa which is supported the miserable, old. rotten aqueduct ucture there are still difficulties and obst tions sufficient to work ruinous and able delay, if not ultimately to defeat the people most Interested in this question of their lity, are our common enemies; the yery rties who are now claiming ownership and are In confiiet over this old aqueduct structure. The people must continue to pay tell, and affer, and wait, until these gentlemen ‘shail settle ther quarrel and decide how the money that a generous Congress has given the people or the ereetion of a bridge on another site hall be divided among themselves. And ther question. Who are Messrs. Lacey and ypherd and Graham, who are assuming Oo engineer this business? Haye _ they had delegated to them by the people of Alexandria county powers plenipotentiary to bring this quarrel to a successfui issue and force 1e people into their views? They seem to be noraat of the fact that Congress made an ap- propriation and authorized the building of a bridge at the “Three Siste and of the further fact that set ighths of the people of the county want the bridge at that point. It is the natural and proper place for a bridge, and had it not been for the otficiousness of these gentle- men onthe one hand and the eupidity of the lessees of the Alexandria aqueduct on the other. we should have longsince had a structure well on its way at that point. Here, we are told. a read could he constructed through a beautiful and picturesque country with an easy grade of not more than a foot to the mile, and at a very trifling cost. This is the road that would be wiiversally preferred and traveled by the citi- zeus of Falls Church and beyond. Congress had better pass a law of condemnation of the Aque- duct bridge, pay the lessees what is right, and no more, und set it on fire. After possession is had of the piers it will cost twice as much to build a bridge there as at the Three Sisters, on rights. Too long already lave ow ‘a defrauded of these rights. And!| whom?
