In the absence of the Speaker Mr. Page, of Callfornta, presided. Not over fifty members were in attendance. ‘The tacit understanding yesterday was that the House should adjourn iminediately the journal was read. ‘This program would have been carried’out, but meanwhile ft was discovered that Reprosentative Robeson, of New Jersey, was absent, ‘Then it was arranged among a few to endeavor to secure a call of the House, so that Mr. Robeson could be punished by a tine of $50 under his cwn resolu- tion. The opportunity to pave the way for such a.eail came as an objection by Mr. White, of Ky., to an approval of yeaterday’s joyrnal, because a quorum Was not in attendance. ‘This was met with 4 motion to adjourn, offered by Mr.Peelle, of Indl- ana. Next the Speaker submitted a number ofre- qusts for leave of absence, This created consid- erable disorder, and all were objected to. The mnotion to adjourn was then put, and it was lost, It was stated before this announcement that Kep- resentative Roveson had been cailed home last evening on a telegram that his child was sick. ‘The requests of members to be excused were then granted, Representatives Springer, of Tilinois, and White, o: Kentucky, who were lending the op position, Were amused at a request, submitted by A fellow-member, that both be granted indefinite leave. Christmas shop- ping in the rain was the inexorable pursuit of the day. The Cosmos Club, which, ever since ts organiza tion has been quartered in Corcoran Building, has taken the spacious and elegant house 23 Lafayette Square, and will celebrat2 its permanent estab- Ushment there by a card reception next Thursday evening, to which ladles are invited. This action on the part Sf the Cosmos recalls several social en- tertalnments given by the old Metropolitan Club, which up to the time of its dissolution occupled the house since transformed and enlarged into Wormley’s. ‘Those occasional receptions were among the pleasantest affairs of those pleasant times; and it cannot be doubted that the “at Home” of the Cosmos next week will. prove to be equally delightrul in every respect, although It 15 understood that dancing, which used to be one of the features of the Metropolitan’s entertainments, will not be indulged in on this occasion. ‘The membership of the Cosmos, which is modeled on the. plin of the famous Century of New York, 13 made up exclusively of gentiemen “interested ‘In the advancement of Science, Literature and the Ss," 1s already quite large, hotwithstanding the comparatively Iinited field’ of selection and the somewhat rigid rules prescribed for itself by the committee on admissions, and the prospect now 1s that the number of members prescri by the ub a3 its probable Hmit will be reached much sooner than was at first supposed. Its roll of members, resident and non-resident, includes many ofthe prominent scientists, Iiferatl and arlists of the country, who look Upon such an organization at the national capital as not only a desirable festure in a soctal point of view, but of Teal advantage tothe tnterests with which they are respectively identified. The Literary Society held Its first regular meeting for the season at the residence of the chief justice of the Court of Claims last evening. Owing to the inclement weather vhe attendance was not a8 large as ustial at its evenings, but there w: nevertheless, a pleasant gathering of menabers and invited’ guests.
