A PUGILIST IN THOUBLE. Beorge Rooke Shoots John Stack Dur- ing a Drunken Quarrel. Brom the New York Times, 6th. George Rooke, the pugilist, was arrested In bed, yesterday morning. at No. S21 East 27th Street, on a charge of felonious assault, prefer- Ted by John Stack, a sporting man, of No. 205 West 13th street, who was shot by him in a dranken quarrel in a notorious resort at 27th Street and 2d avenue, at 7 o'clock. Rooke, tt Sppears, had passed the night on a debauch, and at carly morning went to the place where the shooting occurred with F. H. Felter, of No. 129 West 27th street; Max” Stern, of the same address, and Stack. Drinking went on, and all Were the worse tor hquor. It is generaily Qgreed that Stack was very offensive to- ward Rooke, and. atter they had wran- ied, Stack drew a pistol and fired at ke, missing him. -Rooke then shot Stack through the flesh of the upper part of the left arm. ‘The proprietor of the place did not con- sider that Stack was seriously injured, and closed up his place as soon as he could induce bis beiligerent customers to go away. Rooke disappeared, and Stack’s friends procured a coach and took him to Bellevue Hospital. He and his companions did not behave properly, and created @ disturbance because there was No surgeon ready to dress the wound. They went away with Stack to the New York hos- pital, where he was properly attended to. after they had lodged a complaint at the East Twenty- second-street station-house. Capt. Clinchy did hot believe that Rooke had gone home, but he ‘was so drunk that he had not sense enough to ge elsewhere, and surrendered quietly when @ officer, who went to his house as a last chance, appeared at his bedside. Capt. Clinchy Immediately went with Kooke to the Yorkville Police court. but Justice Kilbreti was at the Court of special sessions, and Hooke was taken back to the el; ation-house ‘Until the afternoon, when he was held to await the result of Stack’s injuries. = i Old Furniture ana Sach. Gath in the Cineinnsti Enquirer. Yesterday I made a long walk for the first time in four or five years through the old farni- ture shops in the southern part of New York, ng Canalstreet in lower 6th avenue and lower down town, near the ferries. What par- was the entire absence of | p old furniture I had been | in the habit of picking up. There was a shop near Liberty street ferry where I would often find a bit of rosewood or mahogany in the shape of a table or stool or dressing | ease, but now I found nothing there but recent furniture out of the factory. Said I to the old man who still kept the place, “why do you have no more old-fashioned stuff?” “Why,” said he, “I haven't had anything of the kind in the shop for two years. The auction sales are now attended by people who are look- ing for nothing eise but old-fashioned furniture. It out sells new furniture. It is the same way with this thing they call brie-a-brac,” said the man, ‘whatever that may mean, Whatever is or old there is arush for. I can buy any more to suit my class of plain cus- but new styles of furniture that have, . been kicked out of rich men’s houses Within three or four years after being bouzht.” 1 found this man’s testimony to be veritied by visits to the other places. I used to go into shops where I could see secretaries of the revo- lationary period, with little panes of glass in the book-case attached. and the desk a hand- made, cioth-covered shutter that pulled out. Nothiux of the sort existed any more. At one Place | saw a tall clock ina corner, such as I had often refused to pay $15 for in the centen- nial year, now marked at $90. What does all an? It shows that avast amount of made by Americans since the war, Is being put into that kind of personal property which makes home celebrated among current society. There are many things a rich man buys in England or the continent which will do him no zoodhere. For instance, a country estate is thelast thing he wants in America, because the wives rn in these large cities have a moral fear of the country. They have been so little by themselves from childhood that to be left alone, as women are on farms and in villages all over this land, gives them a terrible apprehen- sion of burglars, ghosts, &e. Hence fine houses in the vieinity of New York bring poor prices and rapidly change hands, Everybody at some time of life tries it out of town for alittle while, sells out at a great disadvantage, and comes back to town again, Neither is there much passion for fine horses in this city. A certain proportion of people like to be seen in the park of afternoons, and to some of our bankers, brokers and merchants an afternoon ride is all the exercise they get, but I &m compelled to acknowledge that there is elso & fear of horses among city people of this age. The horses are, in the first place, expensive, and involve the keeping of men around the house, who steal the wine, overcharge in the beef bill, and make love to the chambermalds, and there is a strong indisposition among the majority of house-holders to employ any man at all above the age of a small boy. Hence, money 1s not to any large extent put into equipaze. ‘There are splendid carriages, and a great many of them in New York, but they will not compare in num- ber to the fine houses that are adorned with fur- niture, pictures, books and billiard-room, ete. In particular, libraries are growing ail over this country. . Colonial literature commands an extraordinary price. Imight almost gay that the most expensive books now in the world are early writings on the United States. The sec- ond bookstores of Great Britain and the coutineut have their largest and best orders from the United States. Now and then some collector on the other side will pack up all his books, cross the Atiantic, and open a store for six mouths in New York, and, having disposed of his choice wares at high prices. will sell the rest for a lamp sum and go back again and make another collection. All persons have not the faculty to understand books, and hence there is a corresponding rage for colonial farni- tare, paintings, and the plainest class of uten- ails whieh our gra: |. Spinni Wheels, which could have been bought a few years azo for €3 or $4 apiece, are worth $25 and more. A new clock is @ poor beggar com- pared to an aged and battered timepiece that the farmer's wife kept her eye ona hundred years azo to know when to ring the beil at the top of the house that he might leave his plow and conie to dinner. Iwas at an auction sale last week, where I saw a large and orderly audience, and in It recognized the faces of some of the best protes~ sional people in New York, men and women, patiently waiting while plate after plate, dish after dish, teacup after teacup were held up, and the auctioneer called for bids. It looked as devout asa church where, after the sermon is over, they are making subscriptions for the por or for the preacher. I looked around the ‘urniture, and it struck me that some of it was bozus antique, I said as much, and a man in a stern voice immediately spoke to us and denied it. Ftold the man it was none of his business what I said; that I was speaking toa friend, and if that was my opinion he should iave the bene- fit of it. Iwas not able to conclude whether the furniture had not been newly veneered, or Was really something old. The interior skele- tons of it seemed old enough, but the enameled work of various colors on the surface looked as if it might have been recenly made ana stained fa some way. Yet [ will venture to say that nothing of that kind will be left, however du- Dious is its origin. mer TL observed how much antique furniture than our- selves. Many of the old towns had no market other than the local one for furniture of the eighteenth and even nineteenth centuries. Mat- | ters of that sort get their quickening on the | eontinent from Paris, where muney is aequired ly, as here, in stock-jobbing or cheating of some kind, and at once the parvenu bezins to buy in the line of the antique and odd. Profes- gional men all have a weakness for sometning better than their lives and habits. Thus a half- starved author like Balzac, who sometimes had not a chanze of clothes, was able to keep buy- ing rare and deautiial books all his life, uatilhi library, when he was literally worked to death, was found to be something he might save lived on for years in tranquillity if he could have been Ancuceil to sell it.
