Witness, fa company with Lieut. Danenhower, Visited the ‘head man of the village, and urged Upon him the tmportance of having ‘these docu- ments delivered. ‘The styoriskl (or head man) sald 1b would be impossfble to leave the tsland of Jama- valoch for 15 days, unu! the ice had formed in the bay sufficiently strong. This was on the 280) of September. Returning to the hut where the People were, witaess informed them that they were the TN A BAD Way, and not yetout of the woods The supplies were very low—nothing but fish and decayed goose. Wit- nfss told the men to be as cheerful as_ possible, burn plenty of wood and keep warm, ‘There was great danger Of the whole party dying of scurvy, particularly if they had to stay there all winter, itness was in avery bad way, physically, and directed Mr. Danenhower to look afver the gather- ing of wool and policing about the huts. He (witness) did not, however, at this tme, nor at any time, turn over to him the command. ‘The people at Chis Ume were cheerful, although Ina bad way from the bursting of the blisters caused by frost bites. In a few days nearly all of them were able to get about. In the meantime an exile had been quartered with them, making twelve in their party in the Lut. ‘This extle readily understood who they were, and made it known tothe people about them, NEWS FROM NOROS AND NINDERMANN. ‘Witness continued his narrative up to the time of the return (October 23th) of Kousinas, a nati from Bulun, when he was sent for assistance, as heretotore narrated by others. He was gone thir- teen days He brought a letter from a Kossuck sergeant at Bulun, one from a young priest there and a pencil note which he said he had recetved from two Amer! | note was writen by Ninderman and signed by | hunself and Noros, stating that they were two of a party of fourteen Americans, w°o were starving to death (0 the northeast and in need of imme- diate assistance. The original note was then identified by the witness and put in evide Witness said: “When I read tue note by Nini received that the people of the first cutter had landed. It was generally believed by our party that both the other boats had foundered, and we Were astonished to learn of the safety of these two men.” A HAPPY MEETING. There was no other means of finding out the situ ition of De Long’s party but to see Ninderma: and Noros, so witness told Kousuia he must have his dog team and start at once to meet them, as they were on their way to Bulun. Witness then | found Ninderman and Noros quartered in a hut With some natives. On entering the hut saw Nu dermn reclining on a cot and Noros standing up behind a table. “It was cold and dark, and at first he was not recognized. On s»eaking to Noros the latter exclaimed: “My God, Mr. Melville, We thought the whale boats weré all dead.” The Men both complained of their condition, the Insut- ficiency of their food and clothing. Ninderman Was So weak as hardly to be able to stand. Wit hess found no special provision had been made for these men, 80 he at once set about to provide for them. At this point witness was shown by the fudge advocate the private journal of Capt. De ng and identified 1t. The records of this journal began July 8th, 1879, and ended June 9th, 1881. THE SEARCH FOR DE LONG. Witness sald he wrote down everything which Noros and Ninderman couid tell him in regard to their trip and where they left DeLong, to be used as his (witness?) instructions in pursuing the search. Witness found the men too sick to take with him on such a winter trip; therefore taking down as carefully as ble all they told him he resumed his journey in search of DeLong. On the 8d of November Burtlett had arrived at Buiun, bringing a communication from Mr. Danenhower, ‘who enclosed a letter from the commandant, in- structing the headman at Bulun to furnish wit ness with adog team. Witness arrived at Buru- Joch on the evening of November 4th, where he met the whale boat people on their way to Bulun. He gave Mr. Danenhower instructions to go as fat as Yakoutsk and take all the people with him ex- cept Bartlett. Next day witness started, and on the second day arrived at Bulcour, where the hut was where Ninderman and Noros were round by mola This was 6 versts from Kumak urka, Next day it stormed so severely the natives re- fused to proceed, saying all would perish.
