The officers conducting the prosecutions for the enforcement of the license WS, State that last year, in the case of James avanaugh, taken to the Criminal Courton appeal from the Police Court, it was proved that the de- fendant had bought from the commission houses. The attorney asked the court to instruct the jury that the District must show that the same pro- duce that was boucht was sold from his stand in the Center market. Judge James said he would not 50 instruct. If it was proved that Cavanaugh bad bought produce and sold it from a stand. that a8 the wording of the law, and all the District need prove. In the case of Mrs. Margaret McCur- die, Judge Wylie on the bench, it was decided that all the District had to prove was that the defend- ant bought and sold produce. In the case of Henry Schroth, butcher, before the Police Court, seven months ago, Judge Snell held him, on the District proving that he bought and sold meat, and on that decision all the pork dealers paid icense. ee ‘Tae PROFRSSOR.—The fact of the author and the actor, Mr. W. Tus West Manxer Lor.—The partial owner- ship of the city of a half square of ground on Cameron,extending from Fayette to Payne streets, has appeared on the city accounts for over ficty Years in the shape of a payment by the city, “ground rent, $100.” ‘This half square was origin- ally given to the city witha view of having at some day a pubile market established there. ‘The gift was subjected by the donor to the payment of £100 ground rent forever to the Theologicat semt- nary of Virginla, The promise then was that the expansion of population would justify a market there.
