Webster, who has recovered frim_ his recent tilness, stated that $1,375 had already been subscribed and that $600 Was still needed. A collection was then taken and $750 subscribed. A union love-feast was held at 3:30 o'clock p. m., which was largely attended by former pastors and members from various churches here and elsewhere, addresses being made by Drs. McCauley and Wright and Rev. Richard Norris and Mrs. J. M. Relily, and an inter- esting sketch of the history of the church, written by J. W. Kirkley, was read by Mr. John T. Mitchell.” This sketch showed the first Methodist meeting to have been organized here between 1769 and 1772, and Georgetown to have been made an in- dependent station tn 1784. Dr. J. McKendree Rellly, the recent pastor, preached at night. As the con: gregation seemed to be in the humor of giving, the collection was continued during the day to pay off some Of the floating indebtedness and cver $1,000 realized in the day’s collection, making, with that previously subscribed upon ’ the improvement, about $2,400. Reported for Tux Eventxa Star. THE ALEXANDRIA CANat StocK.—The Alexandrian canal, the control of which is now about to pass trom the city, has always been an expensive work to Alexandria. The Alexandria canal com: Was incorporated ‘a 6th, 1832, with Jokn Roberts, R. I. Taylor, Thompson N. Mason, A. C. Cazenave, Hugh Smith and others as corporators. ‘The mayor of Alexandria dug the first spadefull cf earth for Sts construction on the 4th of July, 1831; and the town sabscribed to it on the 231 of July, 1830, $50,000; May 21, 1835, $50,000; July 9th, 1835, $250,000; May 34, 1843, $100,000; Noveuiber, 1844, $50,000; and Since’ that time ‘has loaned the canal corapahy over $150,000, making $600,000 invested in the canal. Of this the state of Virginia now hold about $270,000, and the residue of the stock is to be transferred to the Secretary of the Treasury, to be heid in the same trust as the stocks boughi Ly the Holland loan are held.
