Their open defense in court 1s & small part of their desperate game. Their ns and their methods are as various and al as the tortuous paths they sneaked along piunder the public treasury. They have men tied to them by the bonds of a common crime scattered everywhere, glad to do the bidding of tie master conspirators to shield themseives from punishment. Oa every expe- dited route are partners or beneficlaries. ‘They have the money to buy men to serve them wherever and whenever the exigencies of their strait nd. ‘Their league spans the continent, eral branches extending north and south from British Colunbla to the Gulf of Mexico. They have their newspapers, notoriously at the capl- tal, covertly srever their work is to be done and wper can be seduced. They have in their t Washington such writers in be hired for their service, and is to smuggle into reputable uch star route matter as the unsus- pecting or careless editor will admit. This Ucular part of their work they eall making public iment. By mall and telegraph they scatter ir lies, Sinister innuendo and bold tion, to defame the prosecution and break its force’ With threat, ridicule and calumny they pursue the officers of the government, and set all their dogs to barking in the same stra ey have labored with sand Make the country believe that the Presid ordered a sham, and that the Attorney ¢ undly and b: ugh to de knows better th for the press as ous Industry to S ‘y oF low, republican or de wants unsparing justice done to every With Ww: rited confilence he tion to the ability, in and zeal of the Attorney Generai,'and can say to those who do not know that officer that honesty 1s bred in his bone; fidelity to his client is the record of more than 40 Years ata circumspect and jealous bar. The Attorney General's office 1s a very different thing from what It was when Wirt Said he earrfed the papers of his office in his hat, ‘The country has grown, and the Department of Justice with it. “District attorneys, marshals, agents, witnesses, prisoners—the whole mactanery Of federal justice Centers in the Attorney General's offi-e; and he must administer it, give directions, investigate questions of law, and render opin- lons for the guidance of the government. The Attorney General 1s the minister of justice of a great country, and much as he may desire to spend his time in court, it is his higher duty to hold his hand on the whole departinent and direct. ‘The trial of these star route cases has been committed to competent lawyers, butthe At- torney General, sitting In his office, Is at the head. He accepts the responstbility. When he shall have been heard in court—as he will be—there will be ho more doubt of his earnestness than of his familiarity with the case. It 1s not strange that the star route villains have spread scandalous sto- ries about the prosecution, when they have not spared the cout. Every ruling in their favor during the trial they have seized on as proof that Jude Wyile, as honest a man as sits on the bench, Was with them and would save them If he could. The government case has been made out, the evidence ts straizhtforward and conclusive. "The CARPET: CARPETS!
