This was the testimony taken by the examiner, Mr. Lovejoy, in the case and re- corded by Mr. Harper, making altogether over 4,000 pages. It is thought now that if the Equity Court is kept open a few days that the parties will be freed from the matrimonial yoke within a week, —— ‘The Texas Pacific Land Grants. DISCUSSED BY THE HOUSE COMMITTEE ON THE JUDICIARY. The charges recently preferred by Mr. J. J. Newell, to the effect that the passage of the act by which the Texas Pacific railroad company secured its land grant in 1871, was procured by a lavish expenditure of ‘money among Senators and Representatives, formed the a eg a e House com! ‘on the jui 3 Previous to m it was the under- standing that Mr. Newell should be invited to ap- pear before the committee to-morrow morning and tell what he knew on the subject, but the com- mittee to-day, by a ma. vote, decided to defer the hearing indefinitely, and to proceed at once with the consideration of all pending land-grant juestions with a view of submit opr to the House during this session or early next winter. At to-morrow’s meeting the comunittee wil take gj ant along the $24 parallel through Arizona. THE CAMPAIGN AGAINST UNTAGGED CANINES OPENED TO-DAY. Poundmaster Einstein this. morning commenced ‘the war upon the dogs of this District. He started out with four aids, and the single horse wagon made by the McDermott Bros, last year for this service. A new outfit of nets for catching them | has also been made, and several new appllances for securing and handling these animals, by which a doz finds himself inside the wagon before he can give a yelp. HOW THE BOYS DEFEAT THE LAW. One great diMiculty encountered by the dog catchers is the habit all the bad. boys have of run- ning after the wagon and holloaing to the top of their yolces to let the neighborhoods through Which the wagon passes know that the pound- man fs about. ‘This has the effect of frightening the dogs into their hiding places, and the owners also, in response to the Warning, secure thelr ani- mnals. KNOWING Doas. Mr. Einstein says the dogs know just as well when the pound wagon is about as the boys do. Many of them have been heretofore chased by the pound men with nets in thelr hands; some of them have been caught and released, and nearly all the dogs in the District know the’ pound men and try every means to avold them. In the year 1872, there were but 375 dogs Im- ded; In 1873 There were 1.081; 1874, 2.200; 1875, 876, 2,309; 877, 2,456; 1878, 2.8232 1879, 4,956; 1830, 1,728; 1881, 3,177: making 23.316 dogs’ tm- punded since the service was first inaugurated. Tt 5 thought there will be a greater harvest this year than ever before, as there are so many dogs kept and so few taxes pald on them. ONLY TWENTY-SEVEN TO-DAY. To-day but 2 dogs were captured. The wagon left the seventh precinct station at 4 o'clock, but the dogs left out were exceedingly scarce. Most of the owners had been notified through Tue ‘STAR on Saturday last that the season would open to-day, so that they were rather scarce to-day. Mr. Einsteine states that they will soon forget about the warning, and it is only a question of afew days when he will have most of the ant- mais. He returned to the pound at 11 o'clock this morning, and before 12 o'clock three dogs had been redeemed by their owners and the tax paid. ea ‘The Star Route Trial, After the report of the star route trial in the first edition of Tug Star closed, Mr. Waish, the witness, identified a number of drafts as having been drawn by J.
