* THE EVENING STAR: WA HINGTON WEDNESDAY... May 3}. 1882. CROSBY §. NOTES... Editor. ‘The Evening Star bas a resntar. permanent. bona fide dally eirenintion more than trevie thet ef any other daily paver published in Washington. and conas to that ef all the | other daily papers here added toether. raons leaving the city for Scan maffed fo thetr adilrexs, pow ten as desired, for fifty cents a ny and changed as invariably in A Doublie-sheet To-morrow. To meet the unprecedented Gemand upon the advertising space of Tux Stax another double. Siieet Will be i:sucd to-morrow. The number of Rew advertisements printed in May is 2,385. +o It igno scerct that the ropwiil-ans have deter. mined upon an acti¥e an 1 v.gorous canvass in the south against the demo-ricy. t the party managers mxke no coneatment of th’s purpose. ‘They are counting upon very material congressional gains In the south, more th Possible oss °s la the north. the astute Jeadersof the republican purty hive not enteret upon tats m ent biindty. They have no doubt information concerning the state of political feel- Mag In that section which ey regard a3 reli ible. ‘They have had offerso: allt rom men hitherto democrats, ond seme of them prominent in that party in —_ ‘nt southern states. These men, who have ir Willingness to Join in a general coaiftion of all the elements opposed to democracy are, comparatively, ond untess they sn Influence cthers to a considerable extent their co-operation wl prove of no essential value to the republicans. It ts mainly upon the belief What political -entiment in the south 13 ripe for a Fevolt against the party that has dominated that section for some yeurs, that the re- publicans base their calculations of con- gressioual gains there. The New York Times, with the view of getting an insight into the existing state of political feeling inthe south, addressed Jetters of Inquiry to one hundred editors of demo- erate papers, at county seats. In these states, (@x- clustve of the border states.) Repifes trom fiity of the editors addressed show a practical unanimity of opinion. According to these letters the demo- cratic party, 28 a national organization, retains its hold upon the people of the south. What dissatis- faction really exists ts of a local or personal char- acter, and will not affect the result of the coming congressfonal elections. ‘There is another feature, not touched upon in this correspondence, that may becume somewhat Prominent in southern congressional elections, ‘That Is the candidacy of Independents. It ts quite probable that there will be independent candt- dates for Congress, especially in districts where a Givision of the democratic vote will not make the election of a republican possible; but the chances are that these independents will run as democrats; that they will prociaim their allegiance to thag party, and vote with !t in the main if elected. —$$<<-¢->—____ It ts very touching to read of the superhuman efforts being made by Gov.Crittenden, of Missourl, to induce the notorious cut-throat bandit Frank James to consent to recetve a full amnesty for all his crimes, and be weleomed back to ornament society as the hero of the day. In the meantime ‘We are told that the people out there are Honizing the mother of the bandit brotyers and the wile ot Frank James. It is evident that Gulteau can no longer monopolize the attention of the senti- mental gushers who worship at the shrine of dis- tinguished criminals The dashing bandit who has shot down his victims by the score, “nsing a Pistol im each hand,” has altogether dwarfed the milserable yrretch who only murdered one, and did that in a sneaking, ungallant way. Still it is fortunate, perhaps, for the ends of justice that Guiteau 1s not in Gov. Crittenden’s jurisdiction. ‘The governor would be very apt to try to induce him to accept an amnesty, in order “to restore Km toa peaceful and honorable citizenship,” as he says about Frapk James. ——_—_~<+o2___ The chafrman of the Pennsylvania republican State committee proposes two settle the differences in the party, for the present, by submitting the Tegular and Independent tickets to the republican Voters of the state on the primary election plan; the ticket revelving the largest number of votes to De adopted and supported by the entire party. ‘Tals plan would do very well if the differences be- tween the regulars and Independents related only to men, but it loses sight of the fact that there are grave principles involved. Besfies, the independ- ents are doubtless aware that in a contest of the Kind proposed they would stand no earthly show against the machinery of the regulars and its trained cap.ctty in managing “primaries.” 02 _—___ Parliamentary rules and practice in gthis country have been pretty closely modeled after ‘those of Great Britain. When the Gladstone gov- ernment in Parliament was confronted with the obstinate resistance of the Irish members upon ‘The coercion bill, new rules to cut off filibustering ‘Were adopted. It must be confessed, however, that Purliument changed {ts rules on that occa- gion with much more deliberation than did the House of Representatives last Monday. On the ‘Whole, the republicans of the House are likely to Mind that they made a bad move in this piece of Party strategy. Yan error in the copy the word "was in place of the word “reject” in the state- me,.t of Representative Speer, of Georgia, pub- Ushed yesterday, saying that there ts no pave De- tween himself and Hon. Alexander H. Stephens ‘With regard to the former's telegram to Dr. Felton, ‘Which telegram said that Mr. Stephens would not Feject the committee's recommendation of himself ‘to the independent-convention as the people’s can- Gidate for governor. Thg error was so palpable, however, that the readers doubtless made their Own correction. Fre H SATINES, LATEST DESIGNS, 50c. BLACK POLKA DOT SURAHS, $1.50. LUPIN'S NUN'S VEILING, 2c. to$t. OUR TRUE-BLUE SERGE SUITS are undoubtedly the dressiest suit that such a limited amount as THIRTEEN DOLLARS will buy. We have no suit at $20 that looks better. There isno summer fabric made that will wear better, even though the cost were double. We guarantee the color to be absolutely “True Blue.” The summer sun will notaffect it. The ‘Suits at $13 are the ones that are cutin PLAIN SACK STYLE. The SILK FACED SUITS cost $2. moro, so does the FANCY PATCH POCKET SACK SUIT, asit costs more to make and trim them. BOYS’ SUITS OF THESE GOUDS will cost you SEVEN DOLLARS AND FIFTY CENTS. CHILDREN’S SUITS are only FIVE DOLLARS, We had these goods made expressly for us, and we unhesitatingly pronounce the True Blue Serge (Cheviot finish) Suit at $13 as good value for far more money. ‘The fact is, they are the cheapeest suit, quality and du- rability considered, that we have to offer you this season.
