Shillington sends The Century Magazine for Automanc Cash AN INVENTION PUT INTO SUCCESSFUL OPERATION AT ‘THE BOSTON DRY GOODS HOUSE. ,The day of the cash boy Is drawing'to a close, as fi invention nas appeared which 1s destined’ to entirely supersede that hitherto siucy, but. useful member of society. The ladies who thronged Woodward & Lothrop’s Boston dry goods house, Pennsylvanta avenue, between 9th and 10th streets, this morning, witnessed the Lamson automatic cash carrier system in full oneration. It be described briefly as an elevated raliroad, on which hollow wooden globes, freighted with’ cash and bills are sent to ‘and from the cashier andthe salesman. “This 1s sour cash- boy.” said Mr, Lothrop to a Star "reporter aking up one of the globes and exhibiting it to the reporter. The globe is divided into hemt- spheres, which are locked together by turning one upon the other. When a customer tenders pay- ment for goods the cash 18 placed and locked, as described, in this globe. In ‘order to prevent any aberration in the movement of the ball, the con- tents are held firmly In the center by springs. The frelghted ball 1s then placed in a little elevator, which fs hauled to an upper track, where it 1s dis" charged from the elevator by’ an ingentous arrangement, and at once begins its journey down a long Incli n to the cashier. Here the right change {s placed in the ball, which fs started back on another incline, and 1s’ discharged automatl- cally intoa litle box or receiver at the hand of the salesman. The wooden globe performs its errand with a promptness and regularity seldom attained by the most dutiful and ambitious cash- boy. There are two tracks running along each side of the store to the cashier's elevate: desk, the upper one being inclined towards the cashier and the lower one away from him. The Dalls are of different sizes, and though there are a dozen balls following one ‘another in rapid succes- slon, the right pall alwas goes to the right place, a the automatic trap which discharges it Is so ad- {usted that it only operates on the ball of the size longing to the box beneath. The successful op- eration of the system this morning was witnessed by @iany people, the constant and rhythmical click of the balis making a very cheerful and agreeable accompaniment for the prosy details of business. : a ee . The Strike in the Coal Mines. HOW IT AFFECTS BUSINESS—AN UNFAVORABLE OUT- LOOK—THE KNIGHTS OF LAROR—THEIR FORMIDABLE PROPORTIONS—HOW THE STRIKE AFFECTS THE CANAL. Correspondence of THE EVENING STAR. CUMBERLAND, MD., May 16, 1882—Your corres- pondent has recently passed through the mineral regions of Allegany county, viewing the many changes and improvements that have taken place in tuis section within the past ten years. The mineral region of this section of the state in which Yes imbedded immeasurable wealth for this and coming generations, ever productive of vast in- peculution. The developments and enterprises which have heen pushed forward here within the past thirty years have been of gigantic it would appear to the visitor that selence and art have exhibited their pro- ress to an extent equalled only by the gran- leur and beauty of the picturesque scenery which everywhere opens up a panorama of dor. Populous and enterpr lages, handsome private tug town: dences of the most vil- and improved and artistle style of architecture have | sprung up, indicating the enormous amount of ital which annucily seeks investment in the coul felis, and which, though often serious obstructions, 18 regarded as safe and. re- munerat} This whole region of country ap- pears to be traversed with a vast network of rall- constructed by wealthy am of the steam whistle nd the iron horse ean be rings alot seen wen higher than Where the eagle butl with all this display of enterpris that business operations are suffering. if not entirely prostrated, by reason of the clash of capt- tal and kubor. THE STRIKE OF THE MINERS still continues, and there seems to be little indica- tion of an early and satisfactory adjustment. The eompantes and miners are not the only sufferers from this state of affairs, but the consequences are permeating every class and trade, reaching and affecting the largest busmess operations through- out the stats. If the compantes belleve they can obtain labor at a reduced price they have a legal right to do so; whether it is fair and just under the ereumstan¢ another n The Consolidation co: company all its railroad employes. The one thousa belong! this comps $ her nest. But ¥ paid off nd miners ny, who are on a strike, would have been paldto-day, had they been at work during the past month, $75,000. T understand that last year the treasurer of this company paid out $900,000 to the miners, and itis sald that. t combined companies paid out about $10,000 daily to thelr employes. In the spring ‘of 1881 the George’s Creek and Cumberland ratiroad had quite a controve with the Baltimore and Onlo raliroad rezarding the crossing of the former road over the litter in the city of Cumber 4. The miners of the whole region were in sympathy with the new road at the Umne, from the faet that a crossing at Cumberland Was heeessary to enable the new road (whieh was then shipping by the Pennsylvania railroad only) to reach the Chesapeake and Obio canal basin and us secure an additional outlet for the coal shi ped over the George's Creck and Cumberland Tatl- road. The sympathy of the men went so far as to cause them to offer to go down to Cumberland in a body and put the crossing in at all hazards, It Wil be remembered that quite a number of miners came down here at the re- ques Henry Loveridge, the president Of the road, but their services were not required, asthe Baltinore and Ohio Co. laid the crossing themseives, and thus put an énd to the contro. Henry Lovertdge expressed his gratitude and promised them a free ride from ning to Cumberland as soon as they could Z the extra cars and locomotives, and also told thea thet should they ever need a'friend to call on hin, and he would serve them to the best of his al President Loveridge fulfilled his promis been giving free excursions from Lon: contng to Cumberland lately at the rate of twenty fazniltes each day trip from Cumberland to Piedmont via the Cumberland and P ania rallroad 1s a de. of the year. The rall- dd runs through a valley eighteen miles long, between Dan’s Mountiin and the Great Sivage ra i from the tine we left Cumberland the neither sile was dotted at frequent inter- als with little mining villages, which appeared to overt table coal simity. At simall mining stations the platform was crowded With bronzed miners, a linge percentaj being of stalwart and muscular build, and nearly having the Inevitable pipe between their teeth. With hands plunged deep in breeches pocket, the slouch hats canted rakishly on one side, and a phicgmatic air, they looked as ft striking’ agreed with them. ‘Tie scene at each station was but the Tepetition of the preceding one, and when we reached Piedinont we were convinced from per- sonal observation that there was NOT A STROKE OF WORK betng done In any mine in the whole valley. The strike cannot fail to be demoralizing in its effect, which will be more widespread than one would suppose. ‘This whole region, which 1s so thickly populated by men, who ordinarily earn comfort- able wages, {x one of the best, sections in the state for commercial business. The miners live well some of them luxuriously for thelr class, and Spend their money freely, thus making an active demand for all classes of goods. Tn all the larger towns, such as Frostburg, Mt. Savage, Lonaconing, Borden Shaft, Barton and Pompey Smash, the nurnber of stores Is remarkably jarge, and, of course, the entire valley 1s overrun with drum- mers, thostly from Baltimore and Pittsburg. ‘The compantes claim to have $75,000,000 worth of property in this region—a statement generally dis- credited, since they only pay taxes on $13,000,000, and, as ‘an independent man sald to me, it would appear that they are “only playing @ game of bluff.” Still there remains the fact that the twelve companies operating in this section may elect to divert their capital into other channels, and in that ‘case the struggle will be a long and bitter one. According to the Pittsburg Lavor Trfoune, the pifatr will De a vital One, and themen will receive in money or kind al 1e they juire, ‘There are estimated to be are 63 MORE THAN A MILLION OF KNIGHTS OF LABOR, and such a combination 1s sufctently rich and formidable to enable the strikers to outstay almost ny corporation the operators could form. In the meantime what 1s to become of the Chesapeake and Ohio canal, which gives employment, in a busy season, to OVER TWO THOUSAND MEN? The canal has made Cumberland what {t 1s, and if that great work goes down, Cumberland will suffer, it 1 feared, just as Harper's Ferry did when the great government works were taken away. ‘The canal suffered last year by the delay in regard. to the rafiroad crossing, and none of its employés have been paid for over four months.
