THE INAUGURAL MEETING AT IVY CITY—PROGRAM OF THE SPORT THIS AFTERNOON. The first fair day after the recent deluge and the first day of the soring meeting of the National Jockey Club made one of those conjunctions which augured well for the success of the races. The crowd was an assured fact, for the weather was sufficient to bring people out if there was any excuse, even a poor one, for going. ‘ AT THE GROUNDS. The races are announced to begin at 8 o'clock, but the carriages began to roll into the grounds at an early hour. The trains discharged a throng of passengers. The track had been carefully rolled ‘and harrowed but the continuous rain of the pastten days ha left It rather soft and mushy this afternoon; still it was in what might be called a fair condition. men Were weil represented, and well- known turfmen from all parts of the country were een on the quarter-stretch. The following evening I re- celved a note from the Executive Mansion, stating “that the President would be pleased to see Mrs. Mason Thursday, May 10th, between 2 and 3 O'clock p. m.” I notified Mrs, Mason of the appoint- ment, and she came to my residence. We arrived at the White House twenty minutes before 2 ee aoe were shown into the East room. We gazed at the much-admired Martha Washington, and soon found ourselves with a sight-seeing ‘party. We passed into the reception room, and were shown the esthetical new Nile green satin curtains, the chairs, sofas, fauteutls upholstered in the same ae varied by some in rich green and cardinal tint embossed velvet. Many lovely ornaments have been added to this room, which show that the President has an eye for the beautiful. Mrs. Hayes’ portral the Green room, elicited much admiration from the Strangers. Mrs. Mason seemed to wander along, as if “through some banquet hall deserted.” She found no pleasure in these at- tractions, her spirit was far away in the pris- oner’s cell, and the burden of her heart’s song, Uke Gretchen's, seemed to be “my peace is gone, my heart is sore, I find him never, never more.” Having sent our cards, we took a seat in the large ante-room by a fire; threatening clouds obscured the sun and cast a gloom; all seemed dark and cheerless within; we were ing for the coming the harbinger of (Geeta wait- interview, which would be or evil toa sad heart. At the expiration or half an hour, the messenger came in and announced “that the President de- sired to see us.” We were shown to his private lor and had to wait but a few moments when e entered from the opposite door. The American people can well be proud of their President for his gentle and courtly manners. I doubt tf any pres- ent monarch could enter the drawing-room with Such unassuming grace as President Arthur did when he came to take by the hand the wife of the poor soldier. I presented Mrs. Mason to the President. He she hands with her. The anxious moment had at last arrived, her pent up feelings could no longer be restrained. She broke forth in sobs; the President looked on with compassion. When she raised her eyes she had full faith in him, for his countenance inspired confidence. She then made a pathetic appeal for her poor husband's re- lease from prison. ‘The President told her that he appreciated her feelings, that he knew all the details of the case, that he would bring the matter before his Cabinet and that ne would do all in his wer. He sald she need not distress herself to 11 him any of the details, and she might feel as- sured that he deeply sympathized with her. He again shook hands with her, speaking in the kindest manner. We then retired to the ante- Toom and took our departure. ‘The President brings to mind the magnanimous man deseribed by Aristotle in the:Ethics, “who thinks himself worthy of great things, being in truth worthy.” In his manner of speaking, which is rapid, his charm consists in a warmth and softness of heart, a sympathy with human suffer- ing, and an apparent hatred of injustice.
