‘They Come awares at Times. While one of our reporters was on his way to the office from the Capitol building Istely,,be, stood for afew sninutes looking at the great obelisk paifiting, just put up by the proprietors of St. Jacobe Oil, amd while féest- ing his eyes thereon. ‘Mr. Luthet Benson, the well- known temperance lecturer, stepped up benide him, and they immediately fell into conversation @m the mesite of both the painting and the Of. They agreed —< the Oil and the ofl painting were excellent. mack dipped by Mr. Betcon struck @a ropefler as being worthy of repetition hore, It wagasfollows: ‘T doubt,” ssid Mr. Benson, “if one cat 0. anywhere without bearing of that Great German Remedy, St. Ja- cobs Oil. I was riding through the state of Indiana lately, and one day as I went along I noticed so much St. Jacobs Oil peeping at me from the wayside signs, that T was filled with the subject. That night I stopped with a friend, Mr. John Ward, of Conuersyille, Indians, one of the wealthiest merchants in the town. And after tea I told the family of the St. Jacobs Oil which I had seen. Judge of my surprise to hear Mrs. Ward say that she was gid that people were hearing of it; that ft was the greatest and best of all medicines, and that she would not thine of being without it for anything. She then gave mea list of the cures it had wrought in her family, and in her neighbors family, and it was, indeed, traly wonderful." so thought we, and we considered at the remark of Mr. Benson, and sail to ourselves that no matter where one goes ho is sure to hear of St. Jacobs OB, aud hear good things of it, though some- times they will come unawares, It ove LITTLE FRIENDS. WASHINGTON WEDNESDAY... ~ CROSBY ry NOYES. ‘The Eveniow Star bas a reaniar, permanent. daily cireaiation more than rrevie ublished im i the Another Double Sheet To-morrow. ‘TRE STAR Will be issued In doudle-sheet or eight Page form of Nfty-stx colmes to-morrow to meet the dewands upon its advertising space = A New York poper, after chronicling the facts ‘that the sales of some of the big dry goods houses in that city have lotely fallen off very much, that the stewards of all the swell clubs report a great Teduction in number and costliness of private din- Bers given, and that none of the leading restau- Tants have done as well this spring as during the last two seasons, exclaims: “And yet mechanics are very generally striking for higher wages!” Our cotemporary evidently !ubors under the misappre- henson that, because the rich are retrenching, the Iaboring men should be willing to work for. their old wages or less; whereas exactiy the reverse 1s not oniy in the natural order of thinga, but an in- evitable necessity of the case. The cost of living has increased so greatly of late that the wealthy Or well-to-do classes who patronize big dry goods stores, give club dinners, and support high-priced Testaurants, find ft necessary to curtail their ex- penditares for luxuries, in order to make both ends meet. The mechanic feels the rise in the prices of provisions, fuel and clothing as sensibly as any_ body,—more keenly, in fact, than anybody else. He, however, has indulged in no luxuries to be cut off. It took about all he could make to keep the wolf from the door before the great advances in prices took place; and, now that they have taken place he has cither to do without the necessaries of lifg ordemand higher wages. Is it strange, therefore, that he adopts the latter alternative? Hasa’t the ‘Working bee in the hive as good a right to live as ‘the drone? APEIL is the month when parents and guardians, who take a pride in seeing their children properly clothed, Provide for them. We make no idle boast when we as- sert that the display this season in the BOYS' AND CHILDREN'S DEPARTMENT surpasses any we have made for the last twelve years. Taste has been 80 lav- ishingly bestowed as to make these garments come properly under the head of ARTISTIC PRODUCTIONS. tee It ts evident that the friends of the late Jesse James are not without influence ta Missouri. The Ford brothers, after being pardoned by the gover- nor for the murder of James, were immediately arrested for alleged complicity in the murder of Hite, one of the former gang of bandits. The Fords will be put upon trial for this crime, and It Is said, If-they are not convicted, or if the governor should again pardon them, warrants for their re- arrest upon the charge of having participated in certain robberies will at once be served upon them. ‘They are nut to be left in the enjoyment of the ‘Dload-money they have earned. It is quite likely that Governor Crittenden wil! not feel called upon to interpose his power any further for the protec- tion of the Fords. He has pardoned them for a erime which relieved the state of a noted and des- petate outlaw. There ts nothing that can be urged in extenu.:tion of the other crimes committed by these brothers, They engaged in robberies, ap- parently, for the sake of plunder, and the murder Of Hite was, from all accounts, a coldblooded and cruel deed. If the law can reach far enough to rid the state of the Fords now, good people out ‘there would, no doubt, feel relieved. ‘We control the sale of the finest made and most artist- ically gotten up BOYS’ AND CHILDREN’S GOODS in the country. They possess seven distinctive merits: “* They are unquestionably the best fitting — “*They are undeniably the best made— “* They are undoubtedly the handsomest styles— “They are as low in price as goods that do not pos- seas these requisites— “* They are not faced with scraps, and will therefore hold their shape louger— “The Jackets are all made by tailors, not tail giving them as good form as 8 man's garment— “*With every Child's Suit there are picces for patch- ing.” Combine these advantages with the enormous variety we offer, and you will at a glance see why you should bring the boys tous to be clothed. We forgot to say that if you want an extra pair of Pants with any Child’s Suit we can furnish them. This often saves the pur- chase of another suit, as the ‘‘little men” will always wear out two pair of Pants with one Jacket. ~~ ee ‘The decision of the Supreme Court in the Louts- jana bond case applies with equal force to the Virginia debt question. The court construes the constitutional provision prolibiting states trom enacting laws thal impair coatracts so broadly that no doubt ts left as to what would be its Geetsion should the Virginia question be appealed toit. With the fact clearly in view that repudia- ‘tion measures cannot successfully run the gaunt- Jet of the courts it would seem to be wise Statesmanship on the part of those who have committed their states to that doctrine to call a halt and either ind with the creditors or make arrangements for the payment of qhe debt. Arkansas and Tennessee, as well as Virginia, ‘Might find it profitable, in the end, to take this course. oe In bis special message to the Senate yesterday ‘upon the subject of Mississipp! river improvement ‘the President expresses the opinion clearly that Congress has the constitutional right to make ap- Propriations for the repair of the levees, and he even goes further and recommends that such ap- Propriations be made. He settles, so far as the Weight of his opinion and advice goes, the ques- tion of the right of the general government toenter states and even cross state Ines In prosecuting a public Improvement. It is a notable fact, and one that illustrates the change that political senti- ment has undergone, that the very men who once ‘were champions of states rights are among those who most cordially agree with the President in his ‘views as to the power of Congress to make these appropriations.
