I notice a statement in relation to the demand of the brick- makers for higher wages, which does injustice to the Washington Brick Machine Company. “Mr. Alfred Richards” may have a stock of brick on hand, but the company I represent 1s prepared to take aid good contracts which offer. Our orders for brick, Including a million for the new Money Order OMice, to be built by Messrs. Hooe Bros., amount to about 2,560,000, but we have a large quantity on hand, having made over 8,000,000 since Februai Ist,and are making adally product of 85,000, enougi to build quite a good sized house. The men em- pleyed by us have but little in common with those who make brick by hand, for w@ give them eleven months steady employment, paying in cash weekly, while men who make brick by the old methods can only work in warm weather, when the sun shines, and have, pergaps, six months steady work all'the year. On the 11th of March I gave our men 20 per cent and % per cent increase, but some of them joined the Brickmakers’ Union last week de- led still more, and stopped work. Although it rained yesterday we made our dally work of $5,000 brick, for out of our force of over 100 men. Dut ten left us on Saturday, most of them recog- nizing the value of steady employment. We are paying common laborers $1.25 per day, an advance Of % per cent over last year, and have Deen paying ft for a month. is 18. a higher rete of wages than most of the in the District are recetving, and had I vn Willing to pay these men less ‘and the so- called skilled laborers more, the union men would have been satisfed. While 'I believe that laborers should be paid all that the work they are em- ployed upon will warrant, and that their lot 1s. at best ahurdone, Teannot recognize the rignt of any sorlety to fix the rates of wages this company must pay those it employs. Dr. Bullock, chaplain U, 8. Senate, ofctating at the funeral services. Mr. West resided in Washington for a few months only. He was a native of Alexandria, and dwelt here for over 80 years.
