The receptions yesterday afternoon were few, but very pleasant indeed. Among the ladies found at home were the wife and daughter of Chief Justice Waite, the daughter of Rep- resentative Russell and ner friend Miss Sut- ton, Mrs. Bancroft, and the young ladies visiting at the residence of Senator J of Nevada,—Miss Grattan, Miss Sterling, and Miss Jones. Sa Regvest ror A BRancu Post OFricr “Ur Town.” Postinaster Ainger fas received a petition signed by about one hundred prominent residents and business men, asking for the establishment of a branch post office on or about the corner of 15th street and Pennsylvania avenue, or in the neigh- berhood of 15th street and New York avenue. ir. Mrtes, (the youngest son of Mr. R. J. Meigs, the clerk of the supreme court of the District), died yesterday afternnoon from heart dis e, at his residence, Boyd’s Station, Mont- gomery’ county, Md., aged 37 years. He’ was a native of Tennessee, and ajthough a mere when the war broke out, he ente the Union service, and made a fine record. He wasappointed by Mr. Lincoln consul to Montevideo. Lately he has been engaged tn farming, making a specialty of fruit culture. He leaves a widow and three chil- dren, and a host of friends who will sympathize with the bereaved family. AN SFFORT TO SECURE A UNIFORM SYSTEM IN ALL THE SUB-DIVISIONS. A meeting of the board of managers of the As- sociated Charities was held last night at the rooms, 1418 F street, northwest, the president, Mr. Dent, in the chair and L. 8, Emery, secretary. The meeting was called to continue the discussion of the subject which was before the of conference last Monday night, at whicb reports were made by the delegates irom the several sub- divisions. Mr. A. 8. Solomons stated that there ‘Was so great a di of opinion as to the re- lations which should exist between the central or- ganiz~tion and the sub-organizitions that it was absolutely necessary that some better understand- Ing should be est: ed between them. Dr. A. F. Pardon, Mr. Emery, Mr. Mann, Mr. C- B. Pearson, Mr. Foster, indall, the chair and others entered into a full discussion of the ques- tons at issue, and the motion was adopted. The chair appointed Messrs. Solomons, Foster, Mann, Steele and Donaldson as the committee, and the meeting adjourned until the next regular meeting, when the committee will report rules governing the sub-divisions and the parent organization. They are to $9,500. ‘THE TRaNsranent Ice ComPANy have doubled the size of their butiding on the canal, and in- creased their capacity for ice making threefold. The purchase by the company of the old Eades’ mill trom Thomas P. Morgan, esq., was simply mavle for the water power. No use will be made of the mill. The water power 13 transferable and the ice company thus gain about 170 inches of water. The price paid was $10,000.
