Southerland, sheriff of Charles co., M4., arrived in this city last evening with a re- quisition trom Gov. Hamilton, of Maryland, for the body of Nelson Lyles, charged with burglary and an assault with Intent to commit rape on the person of Mary Cronan, a white orphan girl living with the familly of J. P. Gibbons, near Port To- bacco, Md. ‘The crimes were committed in No- vember, 1880, and the circumstances were of an aggravated character. The Indictinent was found against him af the next sitting of the grand jury in Charles county after the acts, and the knowl edge of the indictment coming to Lyles he made his escape to this District, where he has since been lurking, most of the time in the Dtviston end other iow places. The penitential season of Lent will commence on Ash Wednesday, the 22d of February. Arch- bishop Gibbons, of this diocese, has Just fssued the following circular, containing the regulations for Lent: 1. Squires failing to come to time, a deputy marshal was sent for him, but returned with the announcement that Squires had taken a morning train for his home in Michigan. Commissioner Bundy, while admitting the right of the defendant to cross-examine the witness, suggested that de- fendant put in what grea | he had. During the evening there were many entertain- ments.
