The rain of the past two days has interfered somewhat with the pur- chasing of presents, but not to the extent one would suppose. Most of the dealers report the largest sales they have ever known, and to-day and to-morrow, with clear weather, the week will round up with a brilliant triumph. The display to-morrow in all of the stores and shops will be at its best and the variety is such that no purchaser can fail to get what he wants. About one of the most appetizing advertise- ments in THE Star is that of C. C. Bryan, at the corner of 15th and I streets. He presents a most tempting array of delicacies and dainties for the holiday week, besides a large stock of fancy goods. His new goods for the table in- clude most everything the palate desires. Thete are Mandarin and Florida oranges, fresh crab apples in tins, finest Deshea raisins, figs, lady apples and plum pudding in tins, leg mutton in tins, and many other novelties, such as cafe des gourmet, French apricot marmalade, iresh clo- ver honey, oysters and meat jellies, and so forth. Mr. Bryan also has a first-class stock of groceries. Just make a memorandum of your intention to visit, to-morrow afternoon, the spacious one- price clothing house of Likes, Berwanger & Co., 310 7th street. If you can’t go to-morrow.make a point to do so next week. A purchase there is a present at any season, for you get a article at_a most reasonable price—in fact, Manager Katzenstein says their prices are natu- rally fifteen per cent less than all other houses. They are manufacturing clothiers, and deal di- Tect with the mills manufacturing cloths, and their prices suit all purses. If you want an overcoat. or a suit, or asingle garment, do not fail tocall and be fitted and suited. You will receive prs and polite attention, and be shown a stock to select from that cannot but please. “Cheap meats,” is the motto of James A. Hoff- man at 914 Pennsylvania avenue, south side, be- tween 9th and 10th streets. Mr. Hoffman could not put out a more attractive announcement in these times, and the result is that he is doing an excellent business in the short time he has es- tablished himself. His porter-house steaks are marked at fifteen cents per pound, and other meats in proportion. He also keeps vegetables and delivers goods free in Georgetown and Washington. Davis, at No. 719 Market space, ought to have a crowded house to-morrow, as he is offering decided bargains in silk handkerchiefs, silk mufilers, plushes, pocket-books, laces. etc. This | is one of the oldest established houses in Wash- ington, and has occupied the elegant store at the corner of 8th st. and Market space, for nearly ten years. Yon can rely on what you buy. and on the prices that it is offered at. The ladies will throng Mrs. M. J. Hunt's stores, at 621 and 623 D street northwest, to- morrow when they learn that she has marked down a large lot of trimmed hats which must be sold, to say nothing of an attractive exhibi- | tion of everything in the millinery and fancy goods line. “Her work baskets, fans, whisk holders and China articles are to be sold at | actual cost. Then she has bargains in gloves, including the mosquetaire undressed kids in eight and ten button lengths. Tl_you want anything old, rare, and curious, or either new or old, in the book line, you can find it at Anglim’s antiquarian bookstore. in the Corcoran building, F street. He buys and ex- changes school books also. The long and well established piano ware- rooms of Mr. Reichenbach, at 423 11th street, a few doors above Pennsylvania avenue, have on sale the celebrated Knabe pianos, grand, square and upright. Last year the Christmas presents took all of Mr. R.’s stock, and it is going quite as rapidly this year. He also has pianos for rent. The finest cuts and roasts for a Christmas din- her, or for a dinner at any time, of beef, lamb, veal, mutton, ete., can always be found at stalls 628, 629, and 630 Center Market. 9th street wing, or atstails 206and 208 Northern Liberty Market. The firm has Rodgers’ rated cut- lery in fine selections, and everything in theline of metal and builders’ hardware that can be named. This tirm began business in 1800—and this is its 81st Christmas. A rich selection of furs (and we are going to have cold weather) can be found at Willet & Ruoif’s No, 905 Pennsylvania avenue, between 9th and 10th streets. They have also'a new lot of canes, umbrellas: Dunlap and Derby and opera hats. Their fur goods are at the lowest market prices, and a bargain now will be re- membered when this class of goods goes up next season—as is anticipated. Messrs. Hume, Cleary & Co., at 807 Market Space, has received one hundred cases of Cook's Imperial champagne—the best American pro} duct ever made—which equals in quality and purity the best imported brands, and. which are sold at about one-half the price’ of the foreign goods, being but $14 for a dozen quarts in cases. While the main building boom the past few years has been in the northwest portion of the city for first-class residences, the eastern section has taken a new departure, and although not much stir has been made over it, there is a ten- dency on the part of many who are securing winter residences in Washington to locate in that direction. Several years ago Capt. Grant started quite an interest in building on Capitol Hill, which resulted in large expenditures in fine’ dwellings there, which has nn kept up since that time. No marked change was affected, however, inthe section east of Capitol Hill “until some two or three years since, when Mr. John E. Herreli, the well-known brick manufacturer, purchased the whole of square No. 947, just east of 8th street, and erected fourteen fine housea thereon, of a'superior class for this section of the city. Twelve of these houses front on Penn- sylvania avenue, between 9th and 10th streeta, and two front on 10th street. They are 22 by 33 feet front, three stories and ‘basement high, with back buildings and commodious yards, and have all the most approved modern improvements which comfort and good taste have suggested, and are much sought after by tenants who de- sire @ quiet and genteel neighborhood. They have pressed b brick fronts, with Ohlo sand stone trimmings, windows, fine entrance ways, omibalesteod Ralls. "Whe rove are large and well arranged, hot and cold water being distrib- uted through them, with baths and closets. The house at the corner of 9th street and the Avenue has three bay windows, and has other extra ad- vantages of entrance, &c. Mr. Herrell has made an outlay of not less than hep 000 on this square and does not Ya =n 7 sell, but keeps the is ent terri houses for rent ise has led to the erection of many othe good houses hereabouts, where land can rocured at cheap rates. Dr. J. E. er, another enerzetic citizen, who sees advant: in this direction, has been foremost in this building enterprise. He is now‘ having four very superior houses erected on North Carolina avenue, between 6th and 7th streets southeast. They are three stories and basement high, with pressed brick fronts, bay windows, back buildings, brick cornices, stone sills and steps, and the interiors are to be trimmed out in first class style, in the various natural woods. They will cost about $10,000. Mr. J. Vance Lewis is now having erected a first-class residence for himself on Capitol Ohio trance Mr. J. C. Baum, well-known on 4th and East Capitol is rem ling a house corner 5th and B is northeast, lded Belek trea in an attractive and moulded with bay window, moulded brick cornice, etc. The interior alterations = improvements will when finished make it lesirable dwell- ing in a desirable nelghborhood. It Is near the ‘hrs Greene equestrian statue and the Pea- bese school-house. ir. A. P. Clark has commenced the erection of a fine dwelling on East Capitol street, be- tween 9th and 10th streets. It is twenty feet front and runs back a good depth, has three stories and basement, back buildings, pressed brick front and moulded brick corni om and isto be finished inside in first-class style with all the modern improvements necessary to comfort and elegance. Mr. Isaac Beers is the contractor; cost $5,000. Mr. Miller is having a residence erected for himself on 5th between East Capitol and South A streets. This has a front of twenty-five feet and runs back pests give iy Cn soors A for a first-class dwellitig. is to have @ front of brick with moulded brick cornices, bay windows, and all the inter- nal appliances for comfort and elegance. Mr. John A. Foos is the bricklayer. Mr. Dyer, of Georgetown, is the contractor. The brick is from the yard of Messrs. J. E. Herrell & Co. Ground has been broken for the erection of a first-class residence on East Capitol street be- tween 8th and 9th streets, for Mr. Alfred Shaw. This is to be in all resy in keeping with the best residences on Capitol Hill. Fine Improvements in West Washing- ton. Since our last mention-of improvements in this part of the city the following houses have been built: Mr. M. J. Adler has in course of erection a fine three story pressed-brick front dwelling, on the north side of West street near the Presbyterian church property. It is after the Queen Anne style of architecture, contain- ing eleven rooms, is 23 feet front by 78 feet in depth. The walls of the building are all built. but no further work will be done upon it until spring, in order to allow the walls to settle. ‘When completed it will be a nandsome improve- ment. Mr. Thomas P. Hess is the contractor. Just oppisite Mr. Shoemaker, of the firm of Beall & Shoemaker, has made a handsome addi- tion to the old homestead property which he re- cently bought, adding another story and back building. Mr. Thos. P. Hess is also the con- tractor here. Mr. A. Hanlon is building what will, » Perhaps, be the finest store here on the corner of 3d an Highstreets, fronting on both streets. Itisthree- stories high, with staunch joints, &c., of mas- sive construction and of imposing appearance. It isto be used entirely for the grocery busi- ness. Mr. McCartney is the contractor, the price being 7,000. On the next corner below, 2d and High, Mr. Frank Renshaw has begun the erection of a fine store and dwelling, 30 by 50 feet. The im- provement will be an unusually attractive one, Mr. R. Hazle is the contractor, the page being $3,000. This also is for the grocery business. The grocery business must be good on High street, for on the corner below Renshaw’s.(Gay and High) Offutt Bros. have built a fine grocery store, fronting on Loth streets, three stories high.’ Messrs. Fearson & Young were the con- tractors for this improvement, which probably cost $6,000, for the reason that property was torn down to make the improvement which cost High street appears to be the coming business street, judging from the improvements. Dr. Becker has just finished a fine improvementand addition to his property on the corner of High and Beall streets, adding a story and back building. The work was done by Mr. Resin W. Darby, but not by contract. The District government has lately built a new house at the Industrial Home school at a cost of $5,000. It is a fine square building, about 40x40. two-story brick, Mr. Columbus Thomas was the contractor. Mr. David Jackson has just completed two comfortable pressed-brick front, two-story and basement brick houses on Dunbarton street, be- tween Washington and Green streets, at a “cost of $2,500. Mr. C. Fearson was the contractor. Mr. Seth Schell also is just finishing the ere tion for himself of two two-story pressed-brick front houses with back buildings on Montgom- ery street, near W Mr. Friebrius was the architect for most of these improvements. sla ae OBSTRUCTIONS TO NAVIGATION AT THE RIVER Front.—Considerable complaint is made by men and merchants doing business on and about Water street of obstructions to naviga- tion, in the shape of old piles and sunken old hulls of disabled vessels, about the wharves. Parties interested state that while the govern- ment is clearing out the channel in the interests of commerce, that something should be done by the District fo clear away the obstructions al- luded to. One of these obstructions is an old hull alleged to have been sunk just below the ferry landing, opposite the wharf of Mr. G. L. Sheriff, by the Ferry company, and is a serious impediment to navigation, ‘especially to the landin; ofgsteamboats. A rather anomolous fact is that the Commissioners have recently ap- pointed a harbor master for Washington, while there are no harbor regulations for this port, thus creating an officer without functions to ex- ecute any regulation he may find it necessary to make for harbor government. Such rules and regulations as are proper for the harbor of Washington should be made and receive the sanction of Congress. ones Affairs in West Washington. BUILDING AssocraTion.—At the 59th regular meeting of the Eleventh building association, held last night at Goddard's Hall, $2,5 500 was disposed of, being 37 shares retired at the stock value ‘ates, $68 per share, At THE recent election of Potomac Lodge Isaac Birch was elected W.M. Building Inspector Entwisle, in answer to the communication of the Hon. J. W. McDill, in relation to the claim of Mr. Alfred Richards, re- ferred to him by the District Commissioners, re- ports that the contract for the erection of coe is publi school building, known asthe “Peabody,” ed by James G. Naylor, as contractor, and Alfred Richards and Thomas Lewis bonds- men, Oct. 14, 1879.) The contractor failed in business on the 2&4 of the same month, which caused a nsion of work on the building. The suret; . Riehards, on or about the 5th of the following mont! resumed work upon the building, and continued it until completed. There was no delay on the part of the District in any particular ofat any point after the con- tract was signed. He states that he is satistied that Mr. Richards, in completing the building, has lost the amount he claims, and he (the in- tor) had placed his loss at $9,000; but he does not think the Joss was caused bythe ad- vance in material,;but in the contract being taken too low. The building inspector says Mr. Richards should base his claim on the facts, trusting to the honor of legislators and to jus- tice and equity. The Commissioners are favor- able to the allowanee of the claim, as Mr. Rich- ards performed the contract promptly, and to the strict letter of its terms. wesiecl oo The Markets.
