Brewster Attornep: General, President Arthur has added another high office to the already long list held in the past Ly descendants of Benjamin Franklin, and those who have married his descendants. Mra, Brewster is a daughter of The late Robert J. Walker, whose wife was Miss Bache, a great grand daugh of Benjamin Franklin, and sister to Mrs, Chas. Abert, the late Mra, Wain- wright, Gen. Emory’s wife, Mrs. Irwin, of Phil- adelphia, and also to Mr. Allan Mclane’s first wife. While Hon. Robert J. Walker was ia Polk's cabinet as Secretary of the Treasury, his wife's maternal uncle, George M. Dallas, was Vice President, and during the last of the pro- ceding administration William Wilkins, the hus- band of Mrs. Walker's maternal aunt, went from the Senate into Tyler's cabinet as Secretary of War. Of Mrs. Sophia Bache, ne Dallas,—the mother of Mrs. Walker, and the other — ladies . above-named,—those who | remember her speak in terms of highest praise, and say she was fit for a prime minister, being a woman of most superior intellect and excellent judgment. As was nat- ural, having so many relatives and connections In the service of the government, she took great interest in affairs of state, and, it is sald, gave much statesman-like advice to those reiatives and made many timely suggestions which, being adopted, resulted very satisfactorily. She had nine children, and every daughter and son married well, and each son and son-in-law held some important office, or was In the army, navy, oF Coast survey, The most noted of her sons was the late Alexander Dallas Bache, who grad- uated at the head of bis class at West Point, and, after holding various literary and scien- tific positions, was by President Tyler appointed superintendent of the U.S. coast survey Tn 1843, which place he filied with great credit to him: self and to the service, until his death in 1867. Mrs. Brewster, as Miss Mary Walker, was greatly admired here, where she lived until her first marriage occurred, during Buchanan's ad- ministration. She lived here again during her widowhood and until her marriage with Mr. Brewster. Her life has been, indeed, a romance. The daughter of a Secretary of the Treasury, she, while a widow, was for atime a clerk in that department, and is now herself the wife of a member of the Cabinet. Postmaster General James and his wife, (and their daughter. Mrs. Pearson,) will go to Phila- before Christmas to meet their little hter who is at school there, and will take her to apend Christinas in York. They will, however, return here for New Year. Mra, James pays Washington and its people the highest possible compliment in saying that, in ite of the anxiety and grief of the summer she spent here while the President was ill, her memories of the city will always be pleasant, and she expresses cordial regret that her hus- band’s business will require them to leave here tly in January. Pitts, Mi and Mrs. Harban, —_- In Hon New Speaker. A BRILLIANT RECEPTION UNDER THE AUSPICES OF THE ONTO REPUBLICAN A8SOCIATION—aR- MARKS OF THE SPEAKER. The reception at Masonic Temple last evening tendered to Gen. J. W. Keifer, Speaker of the House, by the Ohio Republican association, was very largely attended. Hon. William Lawrenee, president of the association, introduced the dis- tinguished guest of the evening in a felicitous gpeech. Gen. Keifer, in his response said: “If Ohio in the past has been distinguished for any one particular trait, it ix taat whenever the Ne- tion stood in need of assistance, even in the matter of filling the offices within its gift, Ohio has always been ready to come to the front. To be more serious, however, I may say that while we are proud to be citizens of Ohio, we subor- dinate that pride to that we feel in being cltl- zens of the United States. But this is not an occasion for me to do more than thank the asso- ciation and all who have honored this reception with their presence. I feel that the honors extended to me to-night are more than I am worthy of. I feel impressed with the bellef that 1 am simply on trial, and that the time to extend such honors toa man is after he shall have successfully fulfilled any high duty cast upon him. If 1 shall satisfy those who have taken the rs pogo f of electing me to the Speakership, I shall feel truly glad.” Gov. Foster, Senator Sherman, ex-Secretary Robeson, Representative Hiscock, Senators Logan and dieton, ex-Speaker Randall, Representatives Orth, Dunnell, Reed, Burrows, Updergraff, Kelley and Butterworth, ‘and Hon.
