In his recent Guildhall speech Mr. G @nequtvocally committed himself to the doctrin of local self-government In Ireland. He satd he would rejoice at the adoption of any system of home rule for that country that would not impair the supremacy of the imperial government. Now. ‘why should not the leaders of the land league take the premier at his word, and employ the power- ful organization they have effected in establishing home rule? Why not, for a time at least, abandon the land agitation and inseribe local self-govern- ment upon their banners? With home rule as a shibboleth, and Mr. Gladstone’s promise to foster and encourage ft, the land league might, in a shorter period than such politicAl charges are usually brought about, acquire for Ireland the Tight to regulate her domestic affairs in a legisla- ture or parilament of her own choosing. Then the land question could be dealt with by representa- tives direct from the people and familiar with ‘their wants and needs. ‘The most ardent friend of the league must see that the letter of Archbishop Croke, protesting against the “no rent” policy enunciated by Mr. Parnell and his imprisoned associates, will impair the efficiency of the organization in its present work. The archbishop takes direct Issue with the league leaders, and his advice will, no doubt, com- mand respectful attention. He has never been backward or timid in asserting and defending the People’s rights, and they trust him The Irish People must be united tn sentiment and purpose tn order to accomplish any political reform that will Denefit them asa whole. A movement having for {ts object a system of home rule that would recog- nize and acknowledge the supremacy of the Brit- ish government would doubtless command the support of three-fourths of the people. —__$_<os—__— ‘That Supposed Newspaper Harvest. To the Editor of Tur Evestve Star: mi ihink editorial on the “‘xouge game," in the rofexpence, atwnitinge the iliness ana funeral of ng extra for newspapers. But THE STAR seems to ae forgotten the little war it got up, on one of the Cin- Ginnatt vapers, becatise it claimed to get out the most and of course, made the most mone) ic Sites.” Yours truly. JOHN J.J ‘3d street sout ‘Washington, Oct. 13, 1881, ‘Mr. Jett writes in ignorance, as well as In a carp- ing spirit. Yeteven were his inferences correct, there would be no analogy between the case re- ferred to by Tum Stan and that presented by the newspapers on the occasion in question, since the latter only supplied the existing demand for their Sssues at thelr usual and published prices. If any of them profited pecuntarily by the occasion It was in the regular and legitimate line of their business, and not through taking advantage of the opportu- nities afforded by a period of calamity and sorrow, when the afflicted have Ittle chance of protecting themselves from extortion. For the information of our correspondent, however, and for that of others, if any, who may have fallen into the same error, we have to say that THE Srax pald out di- Tretly, as necessary and unusual expenses incident to its extra fssues consequent upon the shooting of the President, many hundred dollars more than it received from their sales. And the same would be true, we think, of every other cheap paper of enterprise in the United States. In the publication of journals like Tue Stan—of its size, and sold at the same price, that is to say,— the difference between the mere cost of the white Paper on which they are printed and the price at Which they are sold is so small that any unusual outlay In thelr production over the average daily expense,—such as extra telegraphing, increased reporting service, larger composition bills, etc., 13 sure to put the balance on the wrong side of the ledger. Then, again, during times of great popu- lar excitement the public mind fs withdrawn from business matters, and advertising invartably falls off; and as that 1s the main source of profit ina cheap newspaper's business, it will be seen that its candie is being burned at both ends. In other Words, while its expenses are largely increased on ‘the one hand its revenues are materially reduced n the other. Asarule, we may add, well established news- Papers do not publish extra issues with the expec- tation of making money directly therefrom. These are furnished to meet the great demand for news existing at certain times, and to retain the good ‘Will of the public by fulfilling its just expectations ‘en such occasions, without regard to the question ef profit or loss. We venture to say that in the large cities of the country where one enterprising Paper made money directly from the late national ealamity ten were, taking all the ttems of the ac- count into the calculation, largely out of pocket in Consequence of it, ne gag ge a ‘The Yorktown centennial closed yesterday with a review of the regular and volunteer troops in the forenoon and a naval review in the afternoon. The morning review was, from all descriptions, a most imposing military spectacle. Fully 10,000 troops Were in line. The centennial celebration appears fo have been a success only in point of the num- Bers tn attendance. In the first place, the location was altogether unfavorable for an event of that character. A dusty soil, in a sparsely settled sec- on, and distant from any town or city; no accom- Mmodations except such as were transported there for the occasion, it is, perhaps, surprising that the Thousands who assembied could be kept there Three days. The original plan of the commission contemplated ceremonies extending over three ‘Weeks, Dut in the light of experience the wisdom of a reduction to three days is apparent to every- ——_—__+e.—__ tine ea Wiens i eae GR GSGEEGe On ee Ralistic moon out west. ‘The editor of the Indian- Spolis Journal pronounees the editor of the Cincin- Rati Commercial “a Mar and a dirty cur,a political tramp and a personal coward.” Remarks lke ‘these are liable to make trouble over in Virginia. What their effect will be in the Buckeye-Hosier- om regions remains to be seen. ee There ts one phase of Guiteau’s case that should not be overlooked by those who are asked to be- Neve him to be trresponsibly insane. That 1s bis intense and constant dread of mob vengeance. AS rule, your true lunatic has no fear whatever f personal violence, much less is he capable of Teasoning as to {ts source or occasion. —— Judge Tourgee’s new lecture Is entitled “Give Us a Kest.” To do his subject full justice the author Should lock up his manuscript securely tn a safe. povoncteitemtie denesiveauenetant incite hiedcbentted ‘The RETAIL PRICE of the GENUINE BROWN'S GINGER KID GLOVES, NEGKWEAR, &c.
