_ THE EVENING STAR. _ WASHI NGT ON, FRIDAY . October 14, 1881. ~~ eROSBY § Editor. The Evening Star bas a reaular, permanent, bena fide daily circulation more than treble that of any other daily paper published In Washington, and equal to that all the _tther daily papers here added tow Tux Stax office is connected with the Telephone Ex- change. Advertisements, orders for the paper by mail and otherwise, news, or any information or business can be sent day or nizht, free of chance. ‘The Double Sheet To-morrow. Tae StaR Will be fssued to-morrow ‘n double- sheet or eight-page form of fifty-six columns. Advertisers will confer a favor by sending tn the!r orders by 12 o'clock to insure insertion and class!- fication. The number of new advertisements thus far in October s 1,137. a Tn all the years of its mistaken policy towards Ireland England has never committed a grav Diunder than was made when Mr. Parnell was ar- Tested. It ts another evidence of the utter inca- Pacity of the English to understand or appreciate the Irish character. The professions of fairness and justness in the administration of the land law ‘on the part of the government had visibly weak- ened the land agitation. Many who were ready to make every sacrifice in support of the princl- ples of land needom have signified a willingness to give the land law a fair trial Archbishop Croke, for instance, hearkening to the earnest pro- testutions of the governinent that It honestly had the Interest of the industrial classes of Ireland at heart, advised a cessation of agitation. He wanted to meet the government half way, at least, and to afford it every opportunity for the enforcement of its polley. The arrest of Mr. Parnell, not for any overt act committed, or any seditious language used, but on the suspicion that he might indulge in such language at Kildare, will destroy the inttu- ence of the supporters of the land law If 1t does not drive them into the ranks of the agitators. It Will Intensify the feeiing of Irish nationality and unite the Irish people, as they have not been united since the Introduction of the land act in Parliament. ~The Irfsh leaders who have coun- geled patience and moderation will, perhaps, be compelled to admit that nothing in the way of Justice to Ireland can be expected, unless tt be wrung from the British government. Another ‘ugly feature of this act is that {t has the appear- ance of a plece of personal spite on the part of Gladstone. He recently, in a public speech, de nounced Parnell; the latter retorted In kind, and Within a few days afterwards Parnell is tmpris- oned, not for what he has done, but for what he might do or say. The once powerful intellect of Gladstone is certainly becoming enfeebled by age ‘when tt does not guard him against the commis- sion of such a blunder. The arrest of Parnell, no doubt, ts the forerunner of a system of vigorous re- Pression against Ireland. The English people are Making the same mistake they have often made, of supposing they can crush the Irish into submis- sion by force. ———__~+e» —____ It is not likely that the extreme members of either political party will be exactly satisfied with the election of Mr. Davis as president pro tem- pore of the Senate. The members of that body as a body have abundant reason, however, to be con- tent with the result, since It s Insured a presiding Officer of capacity and undoubted impartiality. But, beyond this, the country at large 1s to be con- gratulated. Should that extreme contingency arise which this action was Intended to finally meet, the nation has a guarantee in the high char- acter, the great ability and the pure patriotism of Mr. Davis that the presidential oftice would be ad- ministered in no narrow or partisan spirit, but with an eye single to the good of the people and the perpetuity of our institutions In many re- spects it is doubtful whether the Senate could have done better than ft did, in the election of Mr. Davis, if, indeed, It could have done so well ee It ts the uncharttable opinion of the Chicago Times that !f Guiteau had from $5,000 to $10,000 as a fund to invest in retaining fees, he would have Ro trouble In procuring the services of some of the most noted criminal lawyers in the country to un- @er-ake his defence. This may be true; but we cannot but believe that {t does injustice tothe legal | Profession. Quite aside from the money view of | the case, tt Is not like ter would care to be engaged in It.
