The first race, four-oared shells, mile and three-e prize Citizens’ cup, valued at $250, was to have been contested by the Columbia and Potomac crews, of Washington, but in consequence of the failure of the Potomacs to appear, the Co- lumbias simply rowed over the course and were awarded the cup. The weather, after the rain of Sunday, was all that could be desired, and the crowds that poured into the city were immense. All day lot the main thoroughfares were crowded, and the busi- ness houses on ail sides displayed the habili- ments of a grand holiday. The most important feature of the day's celebration was the cere- mony of introducing the water of the Gunpow- der river into the city supply. The event was commemorated by a magnificent display of fountains around the Battle Monument, wit- nessed by thousands of people. In the ‘after- noon there was a parade of the Fifth Maryland regiment, the visiting military companies from Washington, the Grand Army of the Republic and the city police and fire department. The procession was a very creditable one, and the various organizations in the parade elicited much favorable comment. At night the streets in the central section of the city were ablaze with electric lights, and gay crowds thronged the thoroughfares.
