_ THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON, -OCTOBER 7, 1881. The Evening Star has a reaular, permanent. bean Sade as nerd nintion more than creBic that of any other y paper Washington, and equal to that of the _other vanity papers here added teget The Double Sheet To-morrow. Tue Srax will be issued to-morrow in double-sheet or eight-page form of fifty-six col- umns. It will contain over five columns more of reading matter than the double-sheet before it was enlarged, and will be in every way an inter- esting number. The orders of newsdealers can be supplied at a moment's notice; but adver- tisers are requested to send in their orders be- fore 12 o'clock to-morrow. oo ee ‘There seems to be a pretty general disposition among the New York republicans to accept and support the nominations of the late convention. All profess to be pleased with the ticket, though the half-breeds are a little more enthusiastic over it than the stalwarts. The latter, how- ever, are sufficiently elated by the failure of their opponents to carry out their plan for upsetting the “machine” or stalwart republican organiza- tion ofthe party in New York and Kings counties, to accept the situation with a pretty good grace. Mr. George Bliss, who managed the fight for the stalwarts on this issue, thinks the ticket is & zood one and will be pretty generally sup- ported by the stalwarts. He does not, however, express himself as sanguine of it’s success, as it is an off year and the vote will be a light one, It will not be safe, he thinks, to rely for repub- lican success on the divisions in the democratic ranks. John Kelly, in his opinion, will go to Albany and be kicked out of the democratic convention, but for ali that he is shrewd ect to support the ticket. To the question whether it is not absolutely necessary to carry the state to show that New York supports the President, Mr. Bliss answers: “In my opinion it does not make much differ- ence either way, so tar as the President is con- cerned, You sce, this state wus carried last year when Gen. Arthur was in control, and over eighty-one thousand republican yotes were ied in this city alone. At present the half- reeds are in power. Suppose they run a cam- ign and are defeated? What is demonstrated? > people can draw their own conclusions, and however gratifying it might be for the President to know that his own state supported him, he might be pardoned if he felt a little personal priie at the defeat of the party this year.” — Judge Blatchford. of the U. S. district court for the southern district ot New York, bas de- cided that Tammany Hall is not entitled to re- cognition as a part of the regular democracy of New York county. The question of Tammany’s standing in the party got before the court through the action of Chief Supervisor John I. Davenport. In appointing supervisors of elec- tion for the congressional elections for sueces- cessors to Minister Morton andthe late Fernando Wood. Mr. Davenport recognized the New York county democracy (Tilden’s organization) as the regular party. He submitted the list of names presented by the county democracy to the court, which approved his action. Tammany insisted Upon the appointment of its list, maintaining that it was the only regular democratic organi- zation in the county. Thus the issue between the two organizations was brought squarely be- fore the court, which held that as the last demo- cratic state convention, the highest party au- thority in the state, had refused to recognize Tammany it had no right to its claim of regular- ity. Judge Blatchford said it was the practice of the courts in these questions to be governed he state conventions. Tilden ¢ the whip-hand ofJohn Kelly once ++» fe, the independent republican candi- date for treasurer of Pennsylvania is not mak- ing such a lonesome race as the machine bosses predicted for him. The representative council Of the republican league of Philadelphia, which comprises some of the most influential republi- eans of that city, has issued an address urging republicans to vote for Wolfe in order to crush the machine and overthrow the bosses. Wolfe's Fepublican supporters estimate that he will poll 15,060 or 20,000 votes in that cit Wolfe is ap- parently in earnest and means to run the race thro If he does he will possibly defeat Bai- ley, though. of course, he has no chance of being elected himself. The independent and reform republieans of the state take the ground that this is a most opportune time for smashing the machine: that there is nothing at stake in the canvass essential tothe future success of the party, and that the republicans can better afford to be defeated than to continue under boss rule. +> All the indications are that the Yorktown cen- tennial will be a success, both in point of at- tendauce and brilliancy of display. The sec- tary of the Congressional commission says that all the states will be represented and the display will be magnificent. The scene of Corn- wailis’ surrender will be once more a tented field, but this time occupied by happy men, wowen and childrea bent upon pleasure, instead of by hostile soldiery. The picture will be novel and grand; an extensive city of bright new tents covering acres, war vessels of different Bations in full view upon the river, and tens of thousands of people. The Baltimore “Oriole” celebration, too, next week promises to eclipse anything of the kind @ver undertaken by that city. ae It is surprising to what extremes some party Papers will go in behalf of the politieal organi- zation they labor for. An able and respectable n journal of Philadelphia argues that rats must concede the president of the | Senate to the republicans, because, should a democrat be elected, he will be so near the Pres- ident of the United States that “it will offer a ptation to the assassin.” In other words, the democratic party, or some member of it, would strike down another President for the sake of a few months’ possession of his office. ‘The suggestion is worse than absurd. <2 The possibility of the removal of Collector Robertson by the new administration is met by the argument that according to the theory of “Sena- torial courte so stoutly maintained by ex- Senators Conkling and Platt, he cannot be re- moved without the consent of Messrs. Miller and Lapham. That is; the newly elected Senators must approve the selection of a successor to Robertson before he can be removed with pro- priet gee THE START ‘The BETALL PRICE of the GENU!
