Crear REPAIRING, Byrn’s shoe store, 1614 Lith | f Ticket Cases.— v's office was crowded yesterday ith people interested in the case of MeNeir against the B. & O. railroad . This was a counterpart of the case of d va. the B. & O. company, tried on the preceding day, in which the plaintiff demanded $45 damazes for being compelled to pay additional fare from Berkeley Springs to Washington, though holding a round trip ticket which he had failed to have re- Sir John’s Run. The assembled spectators, however, were disappointed, for after a consultation between various parties di- rectly interested it was announced that a settle- ment had been made, the defendant paying the costs. The railroad company paid the costs and re- turned the money paid by them, under protest in both the cases, amounting in all to less than #20. The company claim that they came to the conclusion to end the cases as they stood, beeause, being brought for $50, they could not be removed to a higher court, and a trial by jury was not appealable. The plaintiffs are satistied with this course, and state it was only on prin- ciple that they entered this suit. One of them said it was preposterous to hold the purchaser of a ticket to a contract printed thereon, which he does not have opportunity to see until the company has pocketed the money; and that | When buying tickets the public are not sup- posed to do so for the purpose of reading such contracts; that if the company has a right to sell a contract “unsight unseen,” they have the same right to attach a revised edition of the New Testament or a Hostetter’s bitters’ alma- nac to the ticket, and compel the purchaser to comply with its axioms or directions. ——— ST ‘STINE! Her Recorp is WasuixoToy.—Mrs. Frank Smith Crocker, whose arrest at Milwaukee was mentioned in Tue Stan yesterday, is quite well known here, having been about’ our women’s suffrage coaveniio&s for some years. It will be remembered that she occasioned a scene in the Judicizry committee room of the Senate some sew years azo, when there was a conference with the executive committee of the National Wo- man’s Suffrage Association. Gur firemen have made preparations for the re- ception of some seventy-five representatives of the fire department of Allentown, Pa., who will reach here with an excursion party on the 29th instant. The whole party, including the mayor, councils and city officials of Allentown, will number some three hundred, and will come di- rect to Alexandria and make their headquarters here, visiting Washington and its points of in terest from this city. The excursion lasts thiee. | days, and its whole cost, including fare and | board, will, it is understood, be only $12 to each excursionist. City Boxps.—Within the past five years there has been a notable change in the financial affairs of Alexandria. The bonds of the corporation | which bore six per cent interest could be bought in 1877, at 40 and 41 cents, and to-day the new bonds which only bear three per cent interest are quoted at 58 cents. The punctual payment of the interest, now reduced within the compass of the resources of the eity, has led to this result. Meanwhile the taxes have been reduced from $2.25 to 1.80 on the hundred, and the salaries meager at best) of tne most poorly-paid of the city officials have been somewhat increased. A COMMERCIAL AGENT’s CasE.—A case was before Maj. George Duffey, commissioner of the revenue, involving the tax on sewing machine agents, to-day. BaRatoca, August 12, 1881. THE HEIGHT OF THE SEASON. The crowd for the past fortnight has been asgreat as I have ever seen it at this resort, and next week, when the Bar Association will meet, it will probably be even greater than now. Tam glad to learn that Justice Stanley Mat- thews, of the U.S. Supreme Court, is expected to address the Association, and will probably bring some members of his family with him. PERSONAL MENTION. Nearly all the leading lines of business and the professions, including the ministry, journal- ism, music, the army and navy, and_ politics, have been well represented here this week. The company has included many notable per- sonages, and not a few who are well-known in Washington, as well as some residents of that city. Among the railroad magnates have been W. H. Vanderbilt, Jay Gould, Mr. Jewett, presi- dent of the Erie railroad; Mr. Joy, of Detroit, who nominated Mr. Blaine at Chicago last year; Amasa Stone, of Cleveland, and Mr. Roberts, president of the Pennsylvania railroad. Congress has recently been represented by the following members and ex-members: Senators Davis (Ill.), Blair, Jones (Florida), Anthony and Burnside, ex-Senators Corbett and wife, Stockton and Frelinghuysen with their families, and Hen- dricks and wife. Of the House of Represen- tatives Mason, Kasson and Morse. Rev. Dr. Deems of New York, and Rev. De Witt Talmage, have been among the ministers here, and Mr. Bowen of the N. Y. Independent, and Hugh Has- ting, of the Commercial Adoertiser, among the editors. Among others well known in Washing- ton who have been here lately are Mrs. S. C. Pome- roy, Gen. Sickles, Commodore and Mrs. Nicholson, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Sherrill and their daughter and son, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Ray, Ex-Postmas- ter General Dennison and his wife and daughter, R. H. Clark, U. 8. N., and wife, Mr. Lloyd Wil- liams, of Baltimore, and family, including Dr. and Mrs. Brockenbrough and their little boy; Chief Engineer Shock, U.S. N.; General Brice, U. 8. N. ; the Spanish minister and family; and the Chilian minister and family; Professor Fairlamb and his wife, Miss Eva Milis, Mr. Herndon Morsell, Miss Johnston and her father, Judge Sanders, W. Johnston. Gen. Van Vliet left Monday morning. On the same day ex-Secretary Bristow and his family started for the White Mountains, where they will remain some time, hoping to prevent his annual attack of hay fever. The wife of ex-S ator Stockton has gone to Sharon Spring: treated for rheumatism, with which she is a great sufferer. Senator Jones left yesterday to Visit Chicago. He was greatly delighted with his first visit to Saratoga. Senator Burnside shows no ill effect of the fall from his buggy, which injured him a few weeks ago. He says that severe bruises were all he had to endure. He and Senator Anthony are as mutually devoted as ever. Ex-Goy. Warmoth, of Louisiana, and his wife have been greatly afflicted this week by the loss of their youngest child, who was about a year old. They have one left. Mr. J. G. Cooke, of Willard’s Hotel, has gone with his family to Cooperstown. WASHINGTON MUSICAL ARTISTS. A great crowd assembled in the large parlor at the Grand Union on Tuesday morning to hear Miss Eva Mills, Miss Mary Johnston and Mr. Herndon Morsell, all of Washington, sing. They received every proof of the unmeasured ap- proval of their audience. The Fairlamb Opera Company, including the wife of the maestro, gave a concert in Congress Park this week, which was greatly enjoyed. This company has now gone to Cooperstown, to appear in one of Professor Fairlamb’s operas there. WALKING MONEY BAGS. Until so many railroad magnates assembled this week a veteran visitor at Saratoga com- plained that there was comparatively little wealth here. A mere mill on, however, he does not count as worth mentioning. The very rich men here now are Vanderbilt, 240,000,000; Amasa Stone Cleveland, upwards of 12,000,000; Jay Gould, and Reuben Springer, of Cincinnati, who presented the Music Hall to that city. AS TO EQUIPAGES, &C. T asked the same acute observer who spoke to me of the wealth here how he thought the dis- play in driving compared with that at Long Branch, as I knew he had spent some weeks there as well as here thissummer. “Compare!” he echoed contemptuously, “there's no com- parison to be made between the two places in that respect. At Long Branch there are up- wards of one thousand handsome private equip- ages. Here I don’t think there are over two hundred.” JT had observed that the driving was not nearly so fine a spectacle here as at Long Branch, but did not suppose the difference would be go great as the gentleman quoted estimated it. There are one *%or two four-in- hand teams, one attached to a private pally ne. coach, and I have seen a notable tandem, which makes a great display every afternoon. A lady drives tandem, with long white reins, a pair of strawberry roans, so closely clipped that they look almost pink. They wearbright red leather collars, and the wheels of the black two-wheeled cart they pull are red. The whole establish- ment is exceedingly conspicuous. Another lady drives a dog cart with a groom seated dos a dos to her, very closely dos a dos, indeed. She has no one else with her. NAUGHTY PRACTICES. How demoralizing it is to my sex to engage in gambling, even to the extent of buying half a pool ticket (the whole one being five dollars) on a race is often made manifest at Saratoga in the lack of delicacy shown in accepting pecuniary favors from men under cover of payment of bets and the like by women who would be insulted if a man offered them money without this shallow pretence. A lady who says she attends the races three times a week, and keeps up her interest by purchasing whole or half pool tickets, also tells openly of how a gentleman made a profit of forty dollars for her lately by giving her a point in stocks,—she making no outlay whatever. He chanced to meet her when she was shopping, and asked her if she wanted to make some money, and she said “of course,” as she had spent all her week’s allowance except fifty dol- lars. “Well,” said he, ‘I can give youa point if you like; Just wait here a moment.” She of- fered him her $50 which she had with her to in- vest for her, but this he declined, and she says she supposes he used four or five hundred of his own in the transaction, and in two hours he came back to her and put forty dollars in her hands, saying it was the profit made on the point he had given her. She is a rich, proud woman, who would haye been unmeasureably indignant had any man, other than her husband or a near relative, of- fered her money as a present, but she saw no peseroe offence when given in the manner de- “ON WITH THE DANCE.” ie hop took place at the Clar- endon esday evening.
