GALT & CO. BP CLLETIN EXTRAORDINARY! THE AVENUE CLOTHING HOUSE, THE EVENING STAR. FRIDAY... -AUGUST 12, 1881. The Virginia Straightouts, THE PUBLIC CREDIT PLANK OF THEIR PLAT- FORM, ETC. The platform adopted by the “Straightout” Republican convention at Lynchburg yesterday sets forth “That amongst the principles ef the republican party none is of more vital import- ance to the welfare and interest of the country, in all ite parts, than that which pertains to the sanctity of government contracts. It, therefore, becomes the 5 duty and province of the republican party of Virgin to guard and pro- tect the credit of our time-honor.d state, which has besmirched with repudiation or re- ceived with distrust by the gross misman: ment of the various factions of the democratic which have controlled the legislation of he state.” After declination of the nomination for Governor Gen, Wickham, Major Yost for Lieut. Governor, and Judge Wilboughby for Attorney General, as set forth in our special di patches yesterday, the convention decided not to make any nomination at present, as they deemed it inexpedient, but concluded with | great unanimity to hold fast to the principles of the republican party, ignoting any and all pro- positions for a readjustment of the debt, either national or state. The state central committee | was instructed to issue an address setting forth the actions and principles of the convention. = ph bist ete Spotted Tail's Death, HOW HE WAS KILLED BY CROW DOG AFTER A couxci.. The official account of the murder of Spotted Tail was received at Chicago, Tuesday night, by General Cook, agent of the Spotted Tail I dians, from Acting Agent Lebar. It runs as fol- lows: About noon on the 5th instant Spotted Tail reported at the agent's office to receive in structions regarding his contemplated visit to Washington, he having been selected as one of the representatives of the Sioux nation at tt coming conference at the national capital. He was urged to start at once, as a letter from the Indian office directed him to report to Agent Andrews at Yankton Agency no later than the &th instant, as the delegation from the Pine Rifle Agency was expected to reach Rosebud Agency on the evening of the 5th. Spotted Tail con- cluded to wait until next_ morning and go with Red Cloud delegates to Yankton Agency. This arrangement having been determined upon Spot- ted Tail desired to. have a talk with his people that afternoon and receivean expression of their views upon subjects to come before the confer- ence. Bidding Lebar “good by,” and saying he would call at the office in the evening to receive any further instructions there might be, his people. An interview was held with the In- dians. They had a big talkand a feast and the council broke up. Spotted Tail mounted his horse and started homeward. The Indians were scattering in all directions, with the noted chief somewhat in advance of the others, he being first out of the lodge. After leaving the council lodge, Crow Dog was seen approachiag Spotted Tail. He had his wife with him. He got out of the wagon and was stooping down when Spotted Tail rode up to him. He suddenly rose up and shot Spotted Tail through the left breast. The chief fell from his horse, but rose to his feet and made three or four steps toward Crow Dog. endeavoring to draw his pistol. He then reeled and fell backward, dead. Crow Dog jum into his wagon and drove off at full speed toward his camp, some nine miles distant. The acting agent at once issued orders for the arrest of Crow Dog, under a paragraph in the treaty of 1868, which renders him amenable to the white man’s laws. In compliance with these orders, the Indian police accomplished the arrest of Crow Dog, and he was sent to Fort Niobrara to await trial for murder. —— a The Common Sense of It. From the New York Journal of Commerce. When two fallen women from Switzerland came to our shores we sent them back by the first returning steamer, not caring to increase our stock of immigrants of that character. We annually return paupers and insane persons un- loaded upon us by cunning foreigners anxious to relieve themselves of sucha burden. Have we any less the right to send back a confessed mur- dcrter, who has blown up atrain of cars in the hope of killing a Czar, and who glories in the criminal deed? Not because the terms of a treaty or a proper respect for international com- ity requires it, but because red-handed villains are common enough here already, without add- ing any imported stock, might we very well as- sume to ee the assassins who come here boasting of their achievements. As long as a refugee was only accused of crime the law as- suming his innogence should interfere for his protection. No desire to stand well with other nations should relax one iota of the vigilance with which his rights should be guarded. But when one comes with the confession of his crime upon his lips and seeks not so much a haven of rest where he may cleanse his soul of guilt as a safe asylum in which he may prepare for renewed atrocities, we would for the sake of our own People deny him the refuge he desires. We would rather that America should be the bailiff of Russia than the home of felons. = cor A Simp_e Distnrectant.—A cheap and sim- ple disinfectant which promises to be useful is a solution of chloride of lead, which was first brought into notice by the late Dr. Goolden, of St. Thomas’ Hospital, London. It is inodorous, effective, and its cost infinitesimal. It may be prepared as follows: Take halfa drachm of nitrate of lead and dissolve in a pint or more of boiling water. Now dissolve two drachms of common salt ina pail or bucket of water, pour the two solutions together, and allow the sedi- ment to subside. The clear supernatant fluid | will be a saturated solution of chloride of lead. Accloth dipped in a solution of chloride of lead and hung up in & room will sweeten a fetid atmosphere instantaneously, or the solution thrown down a sink, water closet or drain, or over a heap of refuse, will produce a like result. tee Recrpnocrry. —It is understood that the Treasury department at Washington are dis- posed to return the duty of $1,375 imposed on the shaft brought from Bremen to this city for the German steamship Strassburg. The depart- ment have ascertained that an American vessel in German waters, if compelled to send to America for part of her equipment, to replace that lost or broken, would be treated the same as the German steamship company wish their vessel treated in American waters: that Is, ad- a the goods free of duty.—Balto.
