The Political Situation in Virginia. ‘The action of the Virginia republican conven- tion in not putting a ticket in the fleld leaves to members of that party the privilege of voting as they please, or of not voting at all, as they may preter. They owe no political obligation to the canvass, and may exereise their judgment as citizens in rezard to fhe tickets before them. | kham and these who have acted with | have been striving to save the republican party of the state from disorganization. They succeeded in preventing republican en- ent of a ticket which is committed to tform financially is the Rid- ) proposes to eliminate one- and reduee the interest nainder by arbitrary action of the I lature. creditors are not to have any v in the proposed settleme The r making their canvass mainly upon this issue. ‘They tell the people that V ot able to pay all of her debt; ther will cut down the amount to figures within the ability of the state, and at such interest as they choose to pay, and offer that to the creditors. This is bald re- pudiation, and there is no disguising the fact. n. Wickham, Representatives Jorgensen and Dezendorf. Major Yost, and the other Vir- ginia republicans who have fought so pers tently against coalition, fully appreciate the weight of the readjuster proposition. They know that the success of a ticket upon such a platform means the paralyzing of all the ma- terial interests of the state, for the reason that eapital will not enter a state which repudiates her obligations. ———__~<«+-____ The Great Summer Danger. The burning of a hotel at Beach Haveri last Wednesday night will be very apt to make Sojoiners at summer resorts nervous, more afraid of tire than ever. have that effect. greater than most persons suspect, unless they have carefully considered the subject and coolly calculated the probabilities of a fire, in the first place, and, secondly, the chances of escape in ease one should occur. The fact is, that most of these summer hotels are merely vast tinder boxes, constructed with little reference to the prevention of a conflagration, and provided with few or no means tor subduing one should it once get started. The chances are, therefore, at least ninety in a hundred that a fire breaking out in a watering place hotel will result in the total destruction 6f both building and contents; and we may add that if the inmates escape with their lives they may count themselves fortunate, | indeed. How can the matter be helped ? Tt is hard to | say. From the nature of the case, the situation is surrounded with difficulties, the number and character of which make it almost if not entirely impossible to provide complete security. Mani- | festly the expense of constructing a fire-proof building for a hotel to be occupied only two or three months in the year would be so great, and make the cost of staying in it so high, as to put that provision entirely out of the question. Neither is it possible to provide In all cases a supply of water sufficient to amount to anything in a fight with the flames. There seems to be left, then, nothing but vigilance and caution,—on the part of host and guest alike; and these ought to be exercised always, and in the ex- tremest degree. No person should ever become an inmate of one of these mammoth establish- ments for a night—or of any hotel, for that mat- ter,—without first becoming entirely familiar with all its stairways, passages and exits, and de- liberately planning a route of escape in case of fire or any alarm of danger. These precau- And well may it tions should then be supplemented on the part of | | sh the guest with the greatest possible care in the ‘use of matches, lights and fires. On the other side, the management of a hotel owes it both to iteelf and to its customers to use every means within reach to prevent the occurrence of a fire, ‘as well as to keep the danger from it within the Smallest limit possible. In this direction cer- tainly nothing shontd be accepted as an effort in good faith which does not inciude the furnishing of reliable fire extinguishers, and also a plentiful supply of well-filled water-buckets in every hall of the house, together with a vigilant watch4| Man on every floor, whose duty It should be to keep awake and constantly patrol all its passages the whole night through. These precautions ought to be required by law of every hotel situ- ated remote from first class means of subduing aserious fire; but, law or no law, proprietors pugiit to take them, and the public should make it a point to studiously and firmly decline to pa- tronize any house where they are not afforded. te. ‘The murder of the Fisher children is the most shocking crime that has been perpetrated in this vicinity for along time. It was simply the act md. There is that in a little chitd which appeals to every sentiment of humanity. Its very innocence and helplessness inspire within the heart that Is not devoid of every human sen- sibility a feeling of tenderness. It was evident that these two children, scarcely more than babes, had been killed without provocation of any kind. They were incapable of provoking an attack. Now, the mystery as to who perpe- trated the act has been cleared up. The old megro woman, Clristina Taylor, has confessed the inhuman, the monstrous deed; but the cause or motive for it remains unexplained. She does not pretend to assign any reason for the fiendish act, which, it is easy to believe, must have been committed under some sudden and Insane impulse. Still, that plea can hardly be successfully urged in her defence. The murder- ess was sane enough to conceal her cuilt as best she could, and the welfare of society requires that she should be made to pay the extreine pen- alty provided by law for her offence. ee The irrepressible Dr. Hammond expresses the opinion that a trackman similarly wounded, and treated in a New York hoapital, would receive more energetic and successful treatment than has been given to the head of the nation. Very, likely, as to the energetic part of the business. It is too much of the habit of hospital doctors, @s we all know, when they get a truckman or other poorlaboring man on a table under their bands to try all sorts of heroie and hazardous experiments with him. Perhaps It Is Just as Well that the President happened to escape them. ———__+0+ —___ The Cornell University boat crew have met with another defeat, this time on the Danube, at Vienna, yesterday.
