Nelson, of Annapolis, was on the ground, and he was’ the | Principal speaker at the temperance meeting. | Dr. Murray presided at this meeting, and after appropriate music, Dr. Nelson was intro- | duced. He remarked that he had been actively engaged in the work ely a few years amd Te- | |lated how through the temperance revival in Annapolis, he had become interested: that when he saw gutter drunkards trying to make men of themselves he could not with- | hold his influence. He then referred to the re- forms in the past, how the Bible had, through | the Bible society, been spread through the world, and to the growth of the temperance sentiment and to the churches becoming in- | terested most, and he referred to the success- ful work of ‘the Mizpah Band, of Baltimore, which had been the means of raising hundreds | of drunkards to useful positions in society. He urged all Christians to cast their influence for this catise. | Rev. Mr. Benson referred to the growth of the local option sentiment in the state of Mary Jand, and urged all to help the cause along, prv | dict! that ifthe Christian community would join | in the work it would not be many years before we can boast of a total abstinence country. | y Rev. Arthar | D. Murray, and in a number of tents small com- panies engaged in singing, while later the choir | met to rehearse for Sunday. At night Rev. Mr. Laselle preached from Matt. | . 17, the Kingdom of Heaven is at Hand—the tilee being repentance of sin and how to be forgiven. Ww A’ prayer meeting followed. led by ray, and was continued to bell ring | CONVERSIONS. After the exhortations eight penitents—two young men and six young ladies—presented | themselves at the mourners’ bench, and the young men and three of the young ladies were converted. DRESS REFORM. Yesterday some of the ladies seeing on the part of thes young ladies a disposition to dress often and fashionably, had a consultation, which | resulted in an agreement that if they were per- | mitted to attend the meeting next Season th would bring only lawn and calico dresses, and do all in their power to diseourage the wearing of costly apparel. It was sugzested that if some such move was made in the city churches that many who now keep away from churches would become regular | attendants. It was suggested, also, that at the | camp old-fashioned sun bonnets should be used, but this idea was not endorsed, for they are more costly now than becoming straw hats. To-day is in @ measure a day of preparation for Sunday, and the tenters are expecting large numbers of city people out, especially by the Baltimore and Potomac railroad excursion train leaving the depot at Mg ‘clock a.m. to-morrow. | noon, and Rev. Mr. Laselle at night. Trains will leave Washington to-morrow morn: ing at 8.30 and 10:30 o’cloel 2 o'clock p.m. and will leave the camp ground at 5:58 and 6:30 o'clock p.m. Washington Grove Camp Ground. Special Correspondence of Tur EVEXING STAR. Camp Near Garrnerssure, Moxteomery Covustr, Mn.. } August 6, 1881 Many changes have taken place here since last year, and each change seems to have improved the place, so that instead of a city of tents, #8 of yore, it now appears a city of pretty cottages with all the comforts of a city home except the bath, so that coming to camp at this place no longer means two weeks of spiritual comfort at | the expense afl mages discomfort. A large hotel has been ed to the attractions and is leased for this year and next by Mr. Wash. B. Williams, of your city, who has since the estab- | lishment of the camp—some nine yeu ears—been identified with its interests. The jing-room | of the house is, of course, its best feature, and is | certainly one of the prettiest ones your corre- spondent ever saw outside of the larger cities. It will comfortably seat 250 persons, and with its large windows opening on three sides is cool and pleasant. The sleeping rooms of the house are necessarily small, but they cet models ‘n the matter of furnishing, the co } of all being bright and new and each contain | a full cottage set. So little time is spent in- doors that the size of the room is not so mate- rial as where one is obliged to use a single | apartment both axa chamber and sitting-room. A large porch runs the entire length of two sides of the house and always shady and well supplied h comfortable arm rocking chairs, while ii the grove in front of th The avenue leading — to has been improved — by cottages much larger and more pretentious than | any heretofore erected. They are owned and oc- | cupied by Messrs. H. A. Linger, Rev. Dr. Lana- han, Rev. Mr. Burris and Mr. Sibley. These cot- tages have six or seven rooms each, with large here. Attached to it is an ice cream saloon, which will no doubt be liberally patronized, as there are here this year.
