WASH INGTOR, SATURDAY. Persons == the city tn Gctenmnr cal have Ti Stam mailed to them, postpaid, for fifty cents per month, and the addres« changed as often as desired, The Enstish Prophet of Evil. The Pali Mall Gazette bases its prediction of a coming financial crisis in the United States mpon the assumption that the enormous export trade we have enjoyed for some years past will not last. There is no reason apparent to fear any great falling off in this trade im fatere, and cer- tainly there is ne danger of an abrupt termina- tion of it. The middie and poorer classes of Europe are yearly reaping the benefit of our export articies of foed. They get bread, meat and other necessaries of life cheaper than ever before, because of the enormous exportations from the United States, and they create a demand for these articles that will continue, even in the face of good European erops. The fact that the pe of this country ean compete with Europeans in their own markets will keep up our trade in those conntries. The excess of our exports over imports during the last fiseal n ISS1,) Was $259,726.24. a jarger than daringany preceding yearin the history of the government. except 1879, and that year there was a general failure of the crops. In 1879 the excess was $254,661 .658, or not quite $5,000,000 more than last, year. These figures prove that our export trade will maintain itself because of the law of supply and demand and of competition, regard— less of the state of foreign crops, teaconsiderable extent. The Pall Mall Gazette is as fallacious in its argument that the enormous immigration to this conntry impoverishes it as in its other views of affairs over hi The ‘steady drain of say- ings remitted to the relatives” of the immi- | grants is but a modicum of what they earn and spend. In the first place, the immigrants, as a | rule, bring with them to this country the | proceeds, in money, of all the possessions they had at their old homes. They invest this money in homes, and many thousands of them, indeed the greater proportion of them, begin producing | almost as soon as they reach our country. Hun- dreds of thousands of acres of virgin soil have been turned into productive farms by immi- grants in the last ten years. eee After three day z the Mississippi democratic convention yesterday nominated a candidate for governor. The convention was really divided into two factions, and for a time aserious split in the party seemed probable. | Governor Stone. the present incumbent, was a candidate for a third term, and it was hostility to him that threatened trouble. The fight was im fact against the third term principle. Stone ly half the delezates instructed for him, ‘ed five of enough to secure his nom- ination. Finally Barksdale and Featherstone, Governor Stone's competitors combined upon General Lowery and he was nominated by accia- mation, the Stone men giving up the fight. The convention was made up overwhelmingly of friends of Senator Lamar, and his election to be his own successor in the U. S. Senate is now conceded. a The preliminary report of the census burean on the public schools and illiteracy in Maryland shows that the total number of persons, ten Fears old and over, in that state who cannot read is 111,387. or 2.713 less than in 1870, a fair decrease in face of the fact that during these ten years there was a steady increase of popnla- tdon. The number of whites who cannot write fs 44.316: of colored 90,172, against 46,792 whites and 88,703 colored in 1870. The total number of whites 2i years old and over who could not Write in 1880 was 34,155, against 32.766 in 1870: colored, over 21 years old, who could not write in 1880, 66,357. against 59.705 in 1870. Thefigures show that neither the white or colored people of the state are as diligent as they ought to be in the matter of education, and that there is yet very much for the state to de in the great work of educating her peo x — The President continues to make steady pro- gress towards recovery, but it is necessarily gery slow. He has suffered a great deal, and is very much reduced. The evening rise of fever still remains as a feature of the case, but the Surzeons maintain that there is no cause for un- easiness on thisaceount. One of the most cheer- ing symptoms is a gradual increase of appetite. The President has been something of a sufferer for years from dyspepsia, and this complicates the difieulty of administering nourishment of a character and ina quantity to strengthen him. The surzeons are very positive in their opinions that he is getting weil. ——— The advantage of iron over wooden steam- boats w forcibly illustrated: in New York harbor yesterday, when the passenger steamer St. John of the Long Branch line was run into by a huge iron vessel called the Breakwater, on her way to Lewes, Del. Had the former been built of wood, as such steamers usually are, she would undoubtediy have gone to the bottom at once, with all on board. according to the testi- mony of all observers. As it was.she was only tly damaged, and proceeded on her way with little delay.
