TAR. GTON, JULY 14, 1881. Ww A: 8 H IN THURSDAY CROSBY S. NOYES.. . Editor. The Evering Star ms a regular, permanent, bona fide daily circulation more than treble that of any other daily paper published in Washington, and equal to that of all the other daily papers here added together. Tae STAR office is connected with the Tele- Phone Exchange. Advertisements, orders for the paper by mail and otherwise, news, or any information or business ean be sent day or night, oun of charge. Persons leaving the city for -ae summer can | have Tr R mailed to them, postpaid, for fifty cents per month, and the address changed as often as desired, ‘The Double Shect on Saturday. Tre Sran will be issued in double eight-page form of fifty-six columns on § for the first time since the paper wus enlar, It will contain a picture and description of th few press, and be filled otherwise wi interest- ing reading matter. Advertisers and newsdca! ers will please send in their orders early. os ‘The History of the Great Crime. In view of the host of false rumors afloat in re- gard to the particulars of Guiteau’s crime, and the anxiety of the public to know the exact facts, District Attorney Corkhill has yery prop- erly decided to make an authoritative detailed statement of the affair from the inception of the deed to the time it was put into execution. This Will be found elsewhere in Tue Star, and willbe read with Intense interest. ee The President's Condition. the cavilers who have persisted from the | first in the belief that the whole truth of the |» President's condition has not been told by the w° XODWARD & LOTHROP ANNOUNCE A CLOSING SALE OF éIMES’ WHITE SUITS AND HAVE MADE THE FOLLOWING REDUC- ‘TIONS TO CLOSE THEM AT ONCE: OUR $7.50 LACE TRIMMED SUITS NOW $5.00 “12.00 * a «NOW 8.00 “ Wis « “© NOW 10.00 BOSTON IOUSE, ss 1 NIA AVENUE. PPELENUTH Lapiss’ COLLEGE. Patroness, H.R.H. President, the Right Ite ise, Founder and “HELLMUTH, D.D., D.C. pons, must now admit that there | is ground for solid hope. The President's pro- | gress towards recovery yesterday was somarked | that the non-professiona!s around him could and | did observe it. In truth, the surgeons have | asst been entirely candid in all that they have given | tothe public concerning the President. There | has been no purpose to conceal any important | fact in the case. Access to the White House has been easy, and: every facility has been afforded | the press and the public to get accurate in- | formation, but this has not prevented the circu- | lation of faise and sensational reports to such an | extent that frequently the people have been in | doubt as to the President's real condition. The anxiety to hear the very latest news has been so great, that everything purporting to come from the White House has been listened to and more or less credited. All the rumors of the past few | days, unfayorat President's recove may now be rej Upon the authority of | the surgeons who h: n with the President | since the first made, it can be stated t eations are decide The gravest dangers are passed, and Doctor Bliss said last night: ‘Unless unlooked-for complications arise the crisis is passed.” te The Ohio Democracy. The candidate for | lieutenant governor, Edgar M. Johnson, is a Hebrew lawyer of innati. The republicans having refused to cive the nowination for this Office on their ticket to Gen. Seasongood, a Prominent Hebréw of Cincinnati, the democrats, apparently, are makinga bid fortite Hebrew votes, Of the other candidates on the democratic ticket, Judge Bingham, of Columbus, is the only one ‘Who is much known outside the state. One fact | Of interest demonstrated by the convention that a new element of democracy has come for- | ward to rule the party in the state. The old dy- | nasty of which ex-Senator Thurman has been the head, is superceded, and the younger demo- erats of the state now take the leadership. ‘The Hurd wing of the party succeeded in getting in the platform a declaration in favor of “a tariff | for revenue only,” notwithstanding the fact that i] the head of the ticket is a manufacturer and a protectionist. The indications are that the Pen | dleton and Hurd factions have combined, and, | together, they will probably be able to maintain their ascendency in party affairs for some time to come. This deadly | Work of the heat sounds a note of warning that | Should be heeded. It is not those only who are | actually exposed to the sun's rays that are in | danger. Over-exertion may produce fatal sun. stroke, and persons who are working in badly | Ventilated houses, shops or factories are in as much danger as those whe ein thesun. The stroke comes stidenly unexpectedly. Frequently | the victim the instant before he fails, feels, upon | the whole, as well as usual. One of the first | } signs of danger isin the stoppage of perspira- tion, The skin becomes dry and hot, showing that the blood has reached a degree of heat | which may suddenly cause death, unless imme- diate care is taken to prevent it. Sometimes the warning comes in a sense of faintness or ‘weakness, and in other cases the stroke is pre- ceded by a feeling of slight suffocation—of difficulty in breathing. There is ina large ma- Jority of eases some premonitory symptoms, but | oftentimes of so slight a nature that the person affected either does not give it any thought or attributes it the wrong cause. During excessively hot weather, people should guard against undue exposure or over exertion. In cases of sunstroke immediate remedies must be applied. The tem- perature of the biood must be reduced as quickly @ possible. In most cases the life of the sufferer Will depend upon promptness of action in the Way of relief. The most effective remedy, as a Tule, is the application of cold water (ice water) ‘to the surfaee of the body; rub the bedy all over With ice, or wrap the person (after being stripped) in cloths soaked with ice water, changing the cloths for fresh ones as soon as they become warm. Ice should be applied and held to the sides of the neck where the carotid and jugular veins are, It often happens that death ensues while Waiting for a doctor. It is well enough to send for a physicias, but by a free and persistent use of fee and Ice water much can be accomplished towards restoration before he arrives. Tea- spoonful doses of aromatic of ammonia ‘may be administered in connection with the ice application; but no alcoholic stimulants should be ziven. The wearing of clothing adapted to the season, temperate habits and an avoidance of severe exertion in doing work or rapid walk- Ing when in the sun wil! go far towards prevent- ing sunstroke.
