ING STAR. _ WASHING ETON, JULY 12, 1ss1. Editor. ‘TUESDAY... ___ CROSBY S. NOYES... The Evening Star bas a reguinr, permanent, bona fide daily circulation more than treble that of any ocher daily paper published in Washington, and equal to that of all the other daily papers here added together. ‘THE STAR office phone Exchange. Advertisements, orders for che paper by mail and otherwise, news, or any | nformation or business can be sent day or night, free of charze. "Persons leaving the city for the summer can have THE Stax mailed to them, postpaid, for fifty cents per month, and the address changed often as desired, Carrying Pistols. Judge Pinkney, of Baltimore, in passing sen- tence upon a person convicted of firing a pistol in the streets, pronounced the existing law of Maryland against the practice carrying con- eealed weapons as inadequate, and expressed the hope that the next legislature will see fit to | pass an act stringent and se The Baltimore American speaks out in support | of Jadge Pinkney in his crusade -against this | unnecessary and dangerons practice with a de- | termination that promises good results. On the | 4th of July there were, in Bal pre, more than twenty persons either killed or wounded by fire-arms. Under the city ordinances a fine of five dollars is the extreme penalty that can be inflicted for firing a gun or pistol in the streets. The courts of Baltimore are manifesting a pur- Pose to suppress the habit, but with laws of so | lenient a character as those now existing the task will be difficult. In one of the courts the owner of a pistol which was accidentally the cause of the death of a lady, was punisied as an accessory to the offense, notwithstanding the fact that the weapon was fired by another hand. The Anwrican urges the enactment of the I adeiphia law, which makes the penalty of carrying a concealed weapon with intent to “unlawfully and maliciously te do injury” solitary —_ confinement in prison at hard labor, — and authorizes the jury to consider the fact that such ® weapon was carried as prima facie evidence of theevilintent. The Maryland law prescribes a fine of only ten dollars as the maximum penalty. Such a trivial penalty wouid never deter a man With mischief in his heart from carrying deadly Weapons; the Philadelphia law would. Even the most reckless would hesitate to risk solitary im- Prisonment in a penitentiary for the privilege of carrying a deadly weapon about them; and with courts inclined to put down the practice, as those of Baltimore evidently are, a law so se- Yere could, no doubt, be made effective. The inereasing number of homicides in the country and the frequent accidents from fire-arms call for the strongest measures against the carrying of concealed weapons, as all the murders, and nearly all the casualties, proceed as a direct re- Sult from this practice. + Getting Into Polities Against Their Will. The readjuster delegation from Virzinia, which ‘by such singular chance “accidentally” met in Washington, and subsequently in Harrisburg, at the residence of Senator Don Cameron, was ap- Parently drazzed into politics by some means. | Of course, these gentlemen did not willingly en- ter into the discussion of any political topic, be- eause did not several of thm indignantly repel | the suggestion that they would permit any con- sh as politics to move them ident’s life was in danger? It however, asa fact that Mr. Riddleber- | ition friends were drawn into a | nia situation with Sena- so the dis- appears, ger and his Gscussion of the V tor Cameron. Mr. Kiddleberger, Patches from Harrisburg state, assured Senator Cameron that “the only republicans who oppose ® coalition with the readjusters are those hold- ing office under the United States government.” This assertion, unfortunately for Riddieberger, attracted the ‘attention of some of the Virginia papers which, in refutation, publish a list of U- 8. officials who favor coalition. This list in- cludes U.S. Judge Hughes, Marshal Lewis (can- didate on the readjuster ticket), District Attor- aey Lewis, Collector Brady, Rives and Fernolt, the Richmond postmaster, Gilman and other | federal officials of less importance; while the @nly office-holder who is pronounced in oppo- sition to coalition is Major Yost, postmaster at Staunton. Congressmen Jorgensen and Dezen- | @orf are also determined opponents of the coa- Iition movement, but they cannot, in any proper sense be included among what are ordinarily termed federal office holders. It further appears: that Mr. Riddleberger was as unfortunate in the | information he gave the Senator. The Senator is reported as saying to Riddleberger in Pretty plain terms, that the republican party could not afford to longer support him (Riddleberger) for Sergeant-at-Arms of the Senate; that such a course would Tesult in positive injury to the party, and that it will be necessary to substitute some distin- Guished Union svldier for Riddleberger as the candidate for serzeant-at-arms next winter. It is intimated in the dispatches that Senator Cam- @ron’s mind was too much ensrossed with the President and his critical condition to givemuch thought to polities, and that possibly, had the question of Virzinia and Riddleberzer not been forced upon the Senator just at that time, he Might, perhaps, not have been so short and sharp in the delivery of his conclusions. But as this would imply that it was the Virginia coali- tionists who introduced the subject of polities there must be some mistake about it. ‘They had declared while in Washington that nothing polit- deal could enter their thoughts while the Presi- @ent was in danger. ——————————————— GCE THE START ‘The RETAIL PRICE of the GENUINE BROWN'S GINGER ‘Has been 50 cents a bottle.
