At three o'clock the President continued in his favorable condition. He was resting well. There was no change over the past two hours. Report of the Consulting Surgeons. DETAILED STATEMENT OF THE PRESIDENT'S CON- DITION. Exxcutive Manstoy, July 12.—The following telegram. was sent by the attending surgeons to the consulting surgeons this afternoon: “Executive MaNsioy, 12 m.—Dnuring the afternoon yesterday, the President's tempera- ture rose to the highest point it has yet attained. It began to fall, however, immediately after he received his evening morphia—one-quarter of a in of the sulphate hypodermically— and this morning corresponds with previous days. About 6 p.m. he had a consistent and copious movement of the bowels. His wound was dressed sag spared yesterday evening and this morning. He continues to retain ‘all the nourishment prescribed him, and has had twenty-four ounces of milk and one of rum dur- ing the last twenty-four hours, besides a small quantity of milk toast this morn- Ing. At 8:30 this morning he also received ten grains of bi-culphate of quinia. His general condition this morning appears to us rather bet- ter than yesterday morning. Last night at 7 p.m. his pile was 108, temperature 102.8, res- ration 24. This morning at 8 o'clock pulse 96, femperature 99.6, respiration 22. At 1 p.m. pulse 100, temperature 100.8, respiration 24. D. W. Buss, J. J. Woopwanp, J. K. BaRNEs, Ropert REYBURN. ONE OF THE MOST REMARKABLE FEATURES of the President’s illness is the falling off ix the White House mail. This, notwithstanding the fact that a great deal of assassination matter is sent to the President. The falling off in the mail is due entirely to the fact that no applica- tions for office are received; no papers in behalf of any applicant are sent on to be filed, and no endorsements a yard long come in. It is cer- tainly something very strange to find no litera- ture of this character in the White House mail The Cooling Apparatus, The grand collection of engines and things to work cooling machines in the White House basement is being removed. All but one of the cooling plans have been abandoned. That one is the Jenning’s process, which has continued to work admirably. A’ duplicate of it ona larger scale is being put together so that by no Seer! accident can the cool temperature of the President's room be reduced. It is very important that the temperature shall not be changed except as desired. The exhaust fan makes 120 revolu- tions a minute during the day and about 60 an hour during the night to keep the temperature at the President's bed at 7 degrees. The temperature can regulated by the doors and windows, but that is not considered the better way. The tempera- ture is to be regulated by the revolutions of the exhaust fan. Telephonic communication be- tween the sick-room and the basement where the small engine is worked has been established. A word from the sick-room is answered promptly ‘by an increased or lowered temperature, which- ever is wanted. No noise of the engine or the working of the machinery reaches the sick-room. If there are any odors or impurities in the air, they are eradicated in passing through the chamber where the partitions of toweling are. | By scientific comparison it has been found that | the air in the President's room, in addition to its | low temperature, is two degrees dryer that in any other room in the house. The Chase cooling apparatus which was yesterday put up in the - | ante-room wus to-day removed. This was greatly to the rezreat_ of the reporters, who sat inside the flannel walls and wrote their reports com- fortably, with the thermometer between 55 and 6 degrees. Sees The Pistol Mystery. MR. HERZOG QUESTIONED BY DETECTIVE M’EL- FRESH. As briefly mentioned in THE Star yesterday, Mr. Joseph Herzog, of 9th street, near Pennsyl- vania ayenue, still sticks to his story that Gui- teau, or a man resembling him, was, with 2 com= panion, in his store about five’ weeks before the shooting looking for an English “bull-dog” pis- tol. Thus, it will be seen, there is some discrep- ancy in his statement and that of Mr..Wm. Cope- land, the well-known journalist, who states that he and his friend Alfriend were in the store to buy the pistol. Mr. Copeland, in his ietter to District Attorney Corkhill, suggests that certain questions should be asked of Mr. Herzog, and yesterday Detective McElfresh called and ques- tioned Mr. Herzog as follows: Question.—Did you notice the eyes of the party you took to be Guiteau—that one of them was affected, misshaped or crossed? A: No, sir; I saw nothing the matter eyes. Q.—Did he ask for a Colt’srevolver? A.—No, nothing of that kind was mentioned. Q.—Did he say anything about having had a Smith & Wesson which wore out his pockets in Colorado or New Mexico? A.—No, sir. Q.—Did he remark that the pistol he was look- ing at was a terrible weapon? A.—I don't re- member such words being used. Q.—Did he say he had a Smith & Wesson, but | that it was too small? A.—No, sir; no name for ept_ the British Buli Dog Q.—Didn't you say that you had sold a pistol to a party who went to Colorado who afterwards sent back for another just like it? A.—I may have mentioned that, for 1 had sold a pistol to Detective Voss’ son, and Mr. Voss came after- wards and got another to send him. Mr. Cope- Jand may have been in the store and I may have made this remark to him. GUITEAU’S ALLEGED ACCOMPLICE. “Do you remember how the man who was with Guiteau looked?” asked a Star reporter of Mr. Herzog to-day. “His picture is in my mind now as though he stood before me,” re- plied Mr. Herzog. “I think ff I saw him a long way down the street I would run after him and catch him. He was tall, and his face was smoothly shaven, save a moustache. Probably Mr. Copeland was here. I am very sure he was here from one expression he uses in his letter— about my saying that a man who had bought a pistol and gone west, had sent back for another one. It was veryright for Mr. Copeland to write the letter. I wish the man with Guitean would write a letter too. He may be innocent, but I think if he is innocent he would come out and say who he is.” GUITEAU'S PAWNED PIPE, “What is it about Guitean pawning a pipe with you?” “‘Well, about two weeks prior to the time when ee came in to see the pistol, a man came in and said he wanted to sell a meerschanm pipe. He wanted $2 for it. I did not notice the man much, but looked at the pipe. He said he was a lawyer from Chicago, and here on ghvernment business. He said if{ would buy the pipe he would probably come back himself and buy it at aprofit. I gave hima dollar for it. I remem- ber his saying, ‘I am a lawyer from Chicago, and I am here on government business.” i think,” said Mr. Herzog, holding up a photo- h of Guiteau, “that that is the same man. ff I could see him I think I could be sure. I could recall the impression made on me by the man.” Mr. Hi denies that he gave affirmative answers to Mr. McElfresh’s q jons, and states: positively that the man did not resemble the de- scription given of Mr. Copeland, and that the ty who, Mr. Copeland says was with him, he OWS wei, and W certain that that party was a i | there was some danger of « riot. | moved in the proposed improyeme: | probable | request physicians to prepare their vi | this matter in writing and submit them ne | 84.
