THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON FRIDAY ++-JULY 8, 188i. CROSRKY &. NOYES.._..Editer, ‘The Evening Star has a reguiar, perma ment.bonna fide daily circulation more th: treble that of any other dally paper pub. ished in Washington, and equal to that of all the other daily papers here added together. ———————— SS ———$—— ‘THE Stax office is connected with the Telephone Exchange. Advertisements, orders for the paper by mail and otherwise, news, or any information or business can be sent day or night, free of chsrze. Persons leaving the city for the summer can have ‘Tux Stax mailed to them, postpaid, for fifty cents oe and the address changed as often 56 ired. Cendition Still Hopeful. ‘This 1s the critical seventh day from the shooting cf the President, and the fact that none of the dreaded unfavorable symptoms bave marifested themselves thus far to-day gives further encouragement for the hope that he will pull through. Of course he will not be Teckoned cnt of danger fer many days yet, bat a3 each period when a special danger was ‘ breatened ts safely passed, the chances of his Tuning the gauntlet of the others are tn- Teaged In the same degree. —————— Another ‘Accidental Coincidence.”’ Captain 0. H. Riddleberger, John S, Wise and Collector Brady, of Petersburg, three of the leading Virginia readjusters who “accident iliy” met in Wasii{ngton last Tuesday were in Har- Tisburg, Pa., yesterday. Fate seems to throw these gentlemen together most singularly of late, withont amy design on their part. They all happened & be tn Harrisburg at the same time, and the singular coincidence was made more remarkable by their meeting each other at the residence of Senator Don Cameron. Tues: gentlemen are somewhat apprehensive that their repeated accidental meetings may create an Impresston that they are on some poiltical mission. Bence. they announee that there {3 1s no polit 1 significance In their movemeats. In thct when In Washington, a day or two ago, the) feelingly expressed too much regard and anx whi ty for the bi President to dabble In polities life ts in danger. ee eee Should be Pablished. ow that the steady improvement in the ident’s condition has reassured the people 1 calmed the public mind, there ts nosensi- reason for the longer suppression of the Ts and papers taken from Guiteau after his * St. The people are anxious to know every. d with the assault upon the ‘hey feel that they have a right to uorities state frankly that there is ho suspicion of a conspiracy. rt ts plain to everybody that there was none. There sno pretense that the suppresaion of these papera will, in anywise, assist the ends of justice. Indeec the reasons assigned for the continued secrecy with regard to the would-be assassin 4 his movements are frivol- ous. District Attorney Corkhill is quoted a3 baving said that the letters and papers Which are soeecretly guarded will not be used either before the grand jury orin the trial of Guiteau; that they are not necessary to either his indictmeat or conviction; and, in fact, taat “they areof 10 conseyuence.” If this is true, then there can be no valid objection to the Publication cf these papers. Their conten’ will show, from ail accounts, the origin of the murderous conception in the assassin’s mind, bis train of thought walle contemplating a method for the assassination, and his reasons— such asthey are—for it. As already stated, the theory of a conspiracy has been exploded, and but few now entertain even a suspicion of that kind; but. there are some who st li cling tothis idea, and the best way to coavince them of thetr error is to lay before the c untry the letters of the assassin, which, the author ities all agree, clearly prove that he was en- tirely alone in his crime. At least, this much Hight can be thrown upon the dreadful affair by the pubdiicaifon of these documents, walle thei e is Lo good purpose to be now subserved by their con. iua-d suppression. Es The Great Comet. Mr. 8. C. Chandler, of the Cambridge (™ Observatory, communicate; to a New York paper some information about the comet now Visible in the nortLern heavens which t 1¢ pub- Me have long been walting for. From the ephemeris of the comet given by Mr. Chandier, and which dates back to May 29th, tt appears that the comet seen with the naked eye In Cor- Goba and Rio de Janeiro about the first of June is Identical with that now visible tous. Waen first seen 1a the southern hemlsphere tt was a Very conspicuous object, but there is good rea- ‘son for believing that it might have been sea, ‘With a telescope, as a nebulous object many Months ago. The epbemeris shows that the comet in moving northwest and towards {ts Perthelion rose and set at about the same time as thesun, and, of course, could not be seen in this latitude until it had reached a high Rorthern declination. When rising before or setting after the sun it became visi- Die to the naked eye. At the time Of its nearest approach to the sun, about June 19th, 1t Was almost in straight line between the earth and the sun, and the earth must have Passed very near or possibly through sme Portion of the comet's tail. It is hardly possi- ble that 1t could have been seen in the northern hemisphere before the 2ist of June. From Mr. Chandler's ephemeris it appears that the comet will be within about eignt de- | grees of the north pole of the heavens on the 16th of the present month, and {t 1s probabie that It will continue to be circumpolar in our | latitude until Its great distance from the earth ane sun renders it no longer visible to the Baked eye. The frst elements of the comet's orbit sre a Striking resemblance to those of the great comet Of 1507, but it is well known now that the two comets Cannot be identical.
