THE EVENING STAR. ———— SPECIAL NOTICES. SPECIAL NOTICES. DOUBLE SHEET. WASHINGTON SATURDAY JULY 2, 1881 CROSBY 8. NOYES... Editor. ‘The Evening Star has @ rel Serma- ment, bona fide daily circulation more than treble that of any other daily paper pub- Ushed ta Washington, and equal to that of all the ether daily papers here added together. z THE BTAn office is coppacted with the Telephone Exchange. Advertisements, orders for the paper by mail and otherwise, news, or any informstion or business can be sent day or night, free of charge. ———————————————— Persons leaving the city for the summer can have ‘THE Sra mailed tothem, postpaid, for fifty cents per month, snd the address changed as often as desired. ot The Snooting of President Garfield. An event Little less startling than the agsas- sination of President Lincola, and hardly less momentous In its possibie results, occurred in the waiting room of the Baltimore and Potomac railway station In this city this morning. President Garfield had arrived there at twenty- five mint tes past nine o'clock, to take the lim- fied exprecs train, which was to leave five minutes later, for the purpose of joining his family at Long Branch, when he was shot twice by a pergon standing In the crowd which usually assembles on the arrival and deparcure of trains. Full particulars of tre deplorable tragedy will be found elsewherein this issue, together with such later Inc!dents and detalis as have since transpired. This dreadful affair must be productive of grave and varied thoughts and suggestions, Its most startling feature 1s the fact that as- Sassination has come to b2 a recognized mode Of reaching those forthe time betng called to the head of ourgovernment. Laying aside its effects upon the incumbent of that high place and those immediately connected with him, and without attaching much importance tothe character or purpose of the murderer, the fact that two Presidents have fallen by the bullet of an whether the simple surroundings ani quict modes of life heretofore adopted by our Prest- dents as consistent with the gentus of onr in- stitutions and becoming to the head of a re- publican form of government, ate, after al Wise and suflicteatly safe, If the Calet Execu- lve of the nation ts to b2 a target for the bullet of lunatics, disappointed aspirants for oMice or political malcontents, It whl ba necessary to Surround the office and its incumbent by more formal and eftictent means of protection thar have yet been devised or thought necessary Tn the case of President Garfleld, as in that of President Lincoin, political disappointment ap- pears to have been the inspiring motive of the assassin. This circumstance makes the affair the more deplorable and impressive, and it is this feature of the subject that will deserve and doubtless reccive the most serious conald- eration. That the act in this instance was that of a single individual, probably a lunatic, doubtless without accomplices, does not take away from the situation any of {ts dangerous Probabilitics. Indeed, that fact may be said to rather add to them. At this writing the probabie fate of the Presi- dent cannot be accurately foretold. Tnere are, Bowever, ample grounds for apprehending the most serlous result. Bat this can be said: Whatever his fate may be, that distinguished gentleman and bis family will have the pro. found respect, the deep sympathy ani the fervent prayers not of the American people alone, but these of every civil'zed nation on the face of the earth. —_—_—_<-_ The totat number of business fallures during the first half of the present year was 2,sé agains‘ 2,497 for the same period last year, and 4,018 In 1879. The total Itabilities of the falling firms this year were $40,000,000, last year 060 000 ald in 1979, $65,600,000. a N@ MORE ROUND SHOULDERS, THE AMERICAN BRACE PATENTED. 1.
