An event little lees startling than the assas- emation of President Lincoln, and hardly less momentous In its posstb’e results, occurred in the waiting room of the Baltimore and Potomac railway station in this city this morning. President Garfield had arrived there at twenty- five minutes past rine o’clock, to take the lim- ited express tratp, which was to leave five minutes later, for the purpose of joining his family at Long Branch, when he was shot twice by a pergon standing in the crowd which usually assembles on the arrival and departure of trains. Full particulars of the deplorable tragedy will be found elsewhs this issue, together with such later tnc!dents and details as have since transpired. This dreadful affair must be producttye of grave and varied thoughts and suggestions, Its most startling feature {s the fact that as- Saseination has coms to be a recognized mode Of reaching those forthe time being called to the head of ourgovernment. Laying aside its effects upon the incumbent of that high place and those immediately connected with him, and without attaching much importance to character or purpose of the murderer, the fact that two Presidents have fallen by the bullet of an assassin, ralses the question whether the simple surroundings and qatet modes of life heretofor> adopted by our Prest- dents 28 consistent with the genius of our in- stitutions and becoming to the head of a re- publican form of goverament, are, after all, wise and sufiictently sa‘, If the Chief Execu- tive of the nation fs to be a target for the bullet Of lunatics, disappointed aspirants for office or political malcontents, 1t wiil be necessary to surround the office and Its facumbent by more formal and efficient means of protection tnac have yet been devised or thought necessary In the case of President Garfleld, as in that of President Lincoln, political disappointment ap- pears to have been the tnspiring motive of the assassin. This circumstance makes the affair the more deplorable and impressive, and tt is this feature of the subject that will deserve And doubtless receive the most serious constd- eration. That the act {n this Instance was that of a single Individual, provably a lunatic, doubtless without accomplices, does not take away from the situation any of its dangerous probabilities. Indeed, that fact may be sald to rather add to them. At this writing the probable fate of the Prest- dent cannot be accurately foretold. There are, Rowever, ample grounds for apprehending the most serious result. But this can be said: Whatever his fate may be, that distinguished gentleman and his family will have the pres found respect, the deep sympathy and the fervent prayers not of the American people alone, but those of every civilized nation on the face of the earth. ——~-—_____ ‘The total number of business failures during the first halt of the present year was 2,362 agains* 2,497 for the same period last year, and 4,013 In 1879, The total Mablifties of the falling firms this year were $40,000,000, last year $33,000 000 and In 1579, $65,900,000, rE NO MORE ROUND SHOULDERS, THE AMERICAN BRACE!
