we THE EVENI sit ee BERET CE ED FRIDAY.... JU cr 1, 1SSl. crosaY a. NOVES.__ -Editore The Evening Siar has a regular, permna- t.bona fide daily circulation more thi treble that cf any other datly paper Late lished in Washin, » Rod equal to of all the other dally papers here sdded togethe ————— ‘THe Stan office is connected with the Telephone Exchange. Advertisements, orders for the paper by mail and otherwise, news, or any information or business can be sent day or night, free of charge. Persons leaVing the city for the summer can have ‘THE Sram mailed tothem, postpaid, for fifty cents per month, and the address changed ss often 8 desired. The Double Sheet—Notice to Adver- | tisers. THE STaR printed for the month of June 2,016 new advertisements, being an in- crease Over last June of 264, and an increase for the six months of 1891 over the correspond- ing period of last year of neariy 900. Adver- Users will confer a favor by sending in their crcers as carly as possible for to morrow’s enlarged and extra edition, in order to insure insertion and proper classification. ——__-____ The straightouts of the Virginia repudifcan state central committee claim that the co- alitionists played a little game ef deception upon them at the meeting in Richmond last Tuesday. It appears that Mr. Lewis, after suddebly changing the place of meeting trom the custcm-house to the Exchange hotel, wrote @ note to Gen. Wickham offering to voluntarily reeign the chairmanship if he (Lewis) was per- mitted to call the committee to order. Gen. Wickham and bis friends held a conference, and believing that Lewis’ proposition was made in the Interest of harmony, they consented to it Instead of immediately resigning after calling the committee to order, Lewis pro- ceeded to perform the duties pertaining to the chalrmanehip. Clarke, who had been present at the meeting of the @ist ult., and voted for Wickham, offered the resolution changing the time and place of holding the state convention and calling for the abdication of both Lewis and Wickham ard the elecilon of some other member 10 the position of chairman. When this resolution was finally adopted Lewis Tesigned aud Clarke was made the candidate of the coalition!sts for chairman. It was discov- = then that Clarke had ulsappeared, leaviog aad in the hands of a brother member, and ad the latter voted.for Clarke in the ballot for chairman, 1t seemed to be a prearranged affair. The straightouts ran Cochran and elected him. Cochran voted for his competitor, but when it was learned that the latter had voted for himself—through his proxy—one Member changed his vote from Clarke to Cochran, electing the latter by 15 to12. There were ten proxies at the meeting, eight of whom were in the coalition interest, one being Lewis: brother and anoiker his son. The straight. outs maintain that they had votes enough to have entirely sustained the action of the 2ist ult.. had they desired to be arbitrary; but that { a spirit of harmony they willingly made certain concessions. ——_~-re__ The mevitable has happened. The “woman In the case” has appeared in the Albany dead lock matter,—Ex-Senaior and Candidate Platt being named by the telegraphic gossip as the party in interest. It is likely that the story, as told, is not true, but all the same It will serve to give flavor to the news from the New York capital until it 1s authentically disposed of or something more :ensational comes up to take {ts place. Of the latter alternative there seems to be seme prospect in the reported threats of Edwards, one cf the indicted lobbyists. This Statesman boldiy declares that if he is crowded too far he will tell all he knows about the busi- nes of lobbying at Albany, past and present, and intimates that bis revelations will make it good many degrees hotter for the stalwarts and democrats than they can possibly make It for him. Notwithstanding these threats, or rather because of them, the prosecution will pow have to “push things,” as General Grant once remarked to General Sheridan on the oc- caston of a military crisis of some moment. If they let up at this poine it will be a confession in advance that they are no less guilty than thetr aceuser. —__—____~.-________ he effort to unite the repud Icans aud groen- teckers in Mississtppt upon on3 ticket anion ‘tiorm tbis year has failed. The tisket of such accallition might be eastly arranged py divieing the nominees equally between tue two parties; Dut the construction of a platform would be aifficult. The principies of hard Money and soft money could not be very well divided tn one platform, and the question would be whether to make It all for hard money to accord with repubiican policy, or all goft money to meet the greenbackers’ theory. In Coalitions of this kind elther one party or the other Is compelled to sacrifice principles, and that, perhaps, 1s the reason why such combina- Uons are generally defeated in this couatr; WHEN YOU GO INTO A DBUG STOBE AND ASK FOR “GINGER” OR “JAMAICA GINGER,” You Seldom Get The Genuine Ginger, ALWAYS ASK FOR FRED’K BROWN’s, FRED.
