RILEY, Editor Star:—In the public interest you have already Grawn attention to the numerous cater- Tiltar nests that are now disfiguring the shade tees In most parts of the city. These trees are a marked and Deautiful Teaiure of Wash- king De too. thy for thelr endeavors to properly care for them and protect them from injury. In this gocd work they should be aided dy all public ited citizens. I have thought, therefore. that a few suggestions in referencs to this caterpillar nuisance would be timely and wh el ao wed good. web-worm, known in entomological works as the Fall Web-worm, (aypranrta texfor), 18 be of the most wide-spread and in- jurious insects mn the country, feeding, as it Gore, On all sorts of trees, and occurring every- where east of the Rocky mountains The parent 1s a white moth, more or less spotted with black, which Irsues in epring from the cocoon fa whica the chrysalig_bas bibernated, generally near, or Just Delow, the surface of the ground, but also in aby other sheltered situation. The pale yel- Jow eggs are laié, to the number of 300 and ‘u: ward, Guring the last days of May and the earlier part of June, in this latitude, in one uniform batch, silghly tot reed with white hairs from the hot easily noticed, and tt ts useless to attempi thelr destruction ip a general way. Immediately upon hatching, the young worms feed tozether on the parenchyma of the leaf, leaving nothing but the epidermis. As they grow they sprea frcm leaf to leaf, encioeing whole branches wi bh their web, and few atempts are made to dertroy them until they have reniered ‘bemselves conspicuous, and are nearly full-grown ag at the present time. At t's stsge there is po more available way of de. st oy ing them than by pruning off the infested twigs and branches, care being taken to sudse- quently destroy the worms. A wad of cotton, ce eed eee to the endof a long pole, urate erosene or coal tar ana ignited will also do good service in burn- ing them. But on all the smaller trees of tne city that can be readily reached with a hand | pump there isa much simpler remedy, which might be uniformly employed by the Commis- stoners at trivial ac reel With a little prac- tice the first affected leat or leaves can be de. tected during the first days of vune before the tree shows any disfigurement If at such time the parts of the tree where the young cater- 2 5 5 is e fe} § 3 pillars bave been noticed be sprinkled With water in which London Parple bes been mixed 1a proportion of about 1 poutd of the purple to about 100 gal- lons of water, the young worms will all be de- Stroyed thereby and no further disfigurement of the tree ensue from them. A second appll- cation about the middie of June co the more Mmited number of worms that baich from eggs Jaid after the first application may also be de- tirable. The purple can be got at wholesaie from Hemingway & Co., New York, at from 6 to 10 cents a pound, anda few dollars’ worch Would answer for the trees of the whole city. It would pay the parking commission to have a special tank built and mounted on wheels for {bis purpose, with a force pump that might 02 worked with two men, while a third handles the atomizing nczzle through which the pol- Soned spray should be applied. One of the sim- Plest and most satisfactory nozzles of this kind 1s made by two converging holes s) that the two jets of water bi each other as they issue, Important improvements in the mode of atomizing will be published In the next Teport of the Entomologtcat Commission; but it is not necessary to thustrate them Is this connection. A tank for poisoned water, such a8 T have indicated. would not only prove yaly- able in rrot—cung the trees from this particular caterpilar, but trom most injartous insects that attack th a8, ¢. g., the elm-leaf beetle, which is so bad on the elmsin th3 grounds of the Department of Agriculture and elsewhere. No better investment can be made by the au- thorities. For private gardens. and parkings I would recommend one of the ordinary force-pumps, and the Nelson aquzepult will be found partica- jariy satisfactory. Yours, truly, Cc. V. River, ‘Wasuinctor, D.C., June 22, 1881, — Save the Trees. Ediwor Star: 1 have always noticed with Pleasure that you are deeply interested in everything pertaining to the beauty and attrac- tiveness of our city, and was very glad that in Jast evening’s Stak you called attention to the depredations the worms are making upon the elms in our parks and on our streets ‘ne maples -especially the Norway, the finestof them all—are becomtng a prey to the Having had considerable experience in the cultivation of trees and sbrubs, it pains me to see them suf- fering from want of care. I therefore take the berty of requesting you, tbrough your valu- able paper, to call the attention of ‘the powers tat be” to’ remedy which Suel Foster, esq, of Muscatine, 1owa, has found very effectual in tbe de-truction of the canker worm. Mr. Foster sa}s: “I have had a nght for three or four ye rs with the canker worm on my apple trees. Two years ago I changed Paris green for London purple. at a saving of three-fourths of the cost, and it proved a better articie for the purpose. I teke a forty gallon whisky or kerosene barrel, faw it in two, fasten a hydropuit sprinkling pump in the bottom of the half-barrel, by natl- ing a strap of Jeather to bold the pump firmly to the bottom, and another strap 10 hoid it fast, to the side of the balf-barrel. Then I have two whole barrels, with one head out, to hold the water ip. Place them all in a wagon and drive to the orchard. Put three buckets of water Into the balf-barrel and stir In three small tabdie- speonsful of London purple; stir it until it is well mixed with the water; then use the pump and sprinkle the trees rroughly to the right and left, and on all sides of them. This i3 the cheapest ard most effectual remedy I have found for the canker worm.” I know Mr. Foster to be one of the most intelligent, reliable, and successful horticulturits in the west. He says that the London purple is much better and chearer than Paris green for destroying the potato bug. He mixes one taviespoonful with two gallons of water and applies with the com- mon den sprinkler, I have no doubt but that the application of the London purpie to our affected trees in the manner described by Mr. Foster would effectually destroy all the insects. The Morgan Disappearance Mys- ery. FINDING OF A SKELETON SUPPOSED TO BE HIS. A special dispatch from Batavia, N.Y , to the New York Times, gives an account of the fad- ig of abuman ekel+ton at Pembroke, which ts slleged to be the remains of Wm, Morgan, the man who betrayed the secrets of Freeraasonry 55 years ago, and whose mysterious disappearance has been accounted for upon the theory that he bad been murdered. A silver ring was found With the bon¢s, with the initials *W. M.,” and & Un box, resembling a tobacco box, In which Was found & mapurcript, the writing of which Was scarcely legible, although some of the words could be read by the unaldedeye. The crumpled paper was placed under a microscope, Under the glass the words *-Masons,” * Liar,” “Prison,” “Kill,” and the fall name “Henry Brown,” were vissible, It 1s conjectured that this Is part of a threatening letter from Henry Brown, the great defender of the Masons of Batavia. THURLOW WEED DOUETS THE STORY. A reporter of the N: ¥. Connercial called on Thurlow Weed to get his views on the pro- posed discovery. He sald he could not recon- cile the story with the facts that had come to bis knowledge, and then told of ihe disap; - ance of Morgan and the finding of a iy in Lake Ontario, Mr. Weed said he attended the inquest, and although Mrs. Monroe de- scribed the clothing found on the remains, before looking at it, as being that of sd Le aang gg mn ged failed to foc eanend the bedy; Ww! irs. Morgan accurately par- lcularized certain characteristics of the body, without seeing it, but was unable to identity the clothing. ‘This was very parplexing. Mr. Weed then tells the story told to htm by John Whitney; how he (Whitney) with turee others bad taken Mi from Fort Niagara in & boat, ted a rope arcuod Morgan’s body, at- Uached heavy sinkers thereto and threw the man Into the river. He had assisted at this work a8 & conscientious duty; but for six years had had no mental peace, no mater wherever he went, and was glad he had unburdened ‘is mind. Mr, Weed said he belleved Whitney toid the truth when describing the manner io which Morgan met his death, but bere had been 80 Many stories circulated a3 to his being since seen alive that he could omly look upon the whole affair as one of the mysteries which Will sever be satisfactorily elucidated.
