THE EVENING STAR. spits ey Ate FRIDAY... JUNE 24, 1881. CROARY &. NOVER..__..Editor. The Evening “tar has a reular, perme- nent, bonn fide dally circulation more than treble that of any ether daily paper pub- lished in Washinaten, and equal to that of all the other daily papers here added together. Persons leaving the city for the summer can hsve ‘Tux Stak mailed to them, postpaid, for fifty cents per month, and the address changed desired. To Advertisers—The Double Sheet. THe Stak printed daring the month of May 2,392 new aivertizements, being the largest number ever priated in one month in the his- tory of the paper. The increase for the fiva months of "3! over the corresponding p3riod of last year already exceeds 609, that of May alone being 284. Advertisers will confer a favor by sending In their orders early for to- morrow’s enlarged edition in order to secure insertion and Classtfication. The “Yiorgan” Myth. ‘The discovery of a few crambling bones hav- ing some resemblance to a human skeleton near Batavii Y., has been made the basis of an attempt to revive the “antl-masonry” ex- eitement of half a century ago over the s1p- posed disappearance of one William Morgan. ‘This attempt, however, proved a flat fatlure. ‘The light of history has pretty effeetualiy proved Morgan to have been a myth, usel by designing persons for political effect. The tra- ditionsry account of the Morgan affair fs thattn 1826, just ae he was ready to expose the secrets of freemasonry in a book written for that pur- pose, he suddenly disappeared from his hom> in Batavia, N.Y. The stories of Morgan, wnat masher of man he was, how he disappeared, ete., are so varied and conflicting that if there was nothing else to prove bis myth Seal character these would demonstrate it. He Was represented by one accouat to have been a tatlor; by another to have been a stone- Marcu; a tall man, ashort Man, a druokard, a good man, and so the various legends conflict and contradict each other. He disappeared in Septrmber, so salt, and subsequently the con- fession of some man that he assisted a number of Masons to abduct and drown Morgan was published. Later on a body was found on th3 shrres of Lake Oatarto which was identified by Mrs. Morgan as her late husband, and by an- other woman as a husband of hers, namei ‘Timotby Monroe. Numerous persons were now and then meeting Morgan at some point or other in futi bodily health, after he was sup- perrd to have been drowned and these reports occasionally represented the man to have been s¢en in the flesh, at the same time, thousands of miles apart. Indeed. these discoveries of the living Morgan were kept up for many Jesre—so long. In fact, that they at last refuted themselves by their inconsisten- cles. From beginning to end, the entire Morgan story was a conglomeration of ab- surdities, Inconsistencies and falsehoods. After the excitement created by the reported abdtc- tion and murder died out, the humbug ap- peared. It was shown that the book publishea tm the name of Morgan (assumed no doubt for the purpose) was a reprint from an old work Printed in London in 1si2, and entitled *\Jachin and Boaz.” For some years in the western part of New York bodies of Morgan were betng continually found. It was from this affair that the phrase “A good enough Morgan until after the election” originated in relation to campaign Nea. ——<-_____ ‘The New Yor Times thinks “Mr. Brady doth | protest too much for a man against whom no Process of court has yet issued.” The fridune styles the Brady motion “‘an ingenious bit of by-play;” and says he will doubtless hear from the courtssoon enough. The Sun expresses the opinion that “the star route plunderers will ever be indicted and tried in earnest.” The ‘niladelphia Press says: “Mr. Brady’s counsel @id not hope for an instant trial. The idea was to preyudice the goverament’s case, a destza s3 ‘ransperent that tt has already defeated itsa.f. The government will attend to this ousiness tn its own way, and when it goes Into court the Star-route conspirators will not greatly enjoy that way.” The Philadelphia Times say: 5. terday’s move was only one more effort in the geme of brag that Brady has been playing. H> warts to excite public optaton In his favor, bat he may as well learn first as last that panite opinion has been forestalled and that it believes him guilty It {sa matter of 90 much public interest at this time to know how to deal with the cater pUlar pest that threatens to destroy or greatly disfigure a large portion of our beautiful ahada trees, that the practical suggestions of Prot. Kiley, elsewhere, deserve close attention. He | gives needed information in regard to the de velopment and habits of the caterpillar, and Points out the most effectual modes of heading cf its depredations. Citizens who have a Proper pride in the shade trees of Washington Will no doubt gladly co-operate with the Dis. Ulct offictals in the work of exterminating the pest. Co-operation is needed on the part of the citizens from the fact that the Parking Com- mission have not the fands at command requl- site for the work.
