To-day Mr. H. B. Crittenden filed a bill for a divorce inthe name of Ida F, Thompson agt. George W. jompson, Tie peutioner states that under the name of Ida Florence Jeffers She was married to defendant at Vallejo, Cal., September 6th, 1si1, defendant belag then a Paymaster’s clerk at the Mare [sland navy Yard, and she charges that defendant began to drink and commenced a course of cruelty to- wards her; that_when he arrived here in the Portsmouth, in February, 1s75, he wrote for her to join him, and she came here in Saptember of that year, but soon after she was again sub- jected to his ill-treatment; that when his child died at 1115 K street, in March, 1879, he took a telegraphic order for $50, procured from his father to bury his child, and spent the mo3t of it in drink, returning her but $10 to purchase the coffin, and was so drunk at the funeral that he could scarcely walk. Mr. Parker said be knew of no law by which a pcesimaster could be hed in such a case for the non-dellvery of a letter, and claimed that the laws governing the deltvery of registered letters were merely rules for te guidance of the department. [Reported for The Star.} A SHOOTING AFFAIR.—About 10:30 last night Lewis E. Payne, Jate clerk of the Alexandria county court, was shot in the arm and slightly wounded ty Edw. Burke, commonwealtu’s at- Torney for Alexandria county, at the Tontine Hotel. A difliculty has been outstanding for some time. Mr. Burke bad been informed that Payne intended to shoot him, and on Wednes- day morning Mr. Payne, under the influence of liquor, went to Mr. Burke’s Office, 1a the mar- ket building, and pointed a pistol within. Two Jaw student's were the only persons there, and the pistol was snatched from Payne’s hands by t a colored man, who carried it off, and Mr. Payne says that he has been unarmed since. Mr. Burke, who hi received frequent warnings from his rriends that Payne Intended to attack him, was sitting at the Tontine last night, when come one sata, * Here comes Payne.” Burke instantly put himself on his guard, and as Payne came within the sa- toon he fired at him. ‘The ball entered Payne’s arm, infiicting a flesh wound only.
