Tue Star printed during the month of May ‘2,392 new advertisements, being the largest number ever priated !n one month In the his- tory of the paper. The increase for the five months of “Si over the corresponding period of last year already exceeds 600, that of May alone being 284. Advertisers will confer a favor by sending tn their orders early for next Saturday's enlarged edition in order to secure insertion and classification. The Atlantic Cables. ‘The new cables of the American Cadie Co-n- pany will be In operation within a few months, and tt ts predicted that this additional tele- graphic connection of the two continents wiil reduce the charge per word batween London and New York to twenty-five cents, and possi- bly aslow as tweive and a half cents. It is claimed that the existing cables—three balong- ingto the Anglo-American Comp.ny, one to the Direct Cable Company and 020 to the French Company—are suffictent to transmit double all the business now done; that in addi- tion to the five named—of which four are du- plex—another cable of the Anglo-American Company ia soon to b2 repiired, which will make, in fact, eleven separate lines (flve du- Plex and one single.) Oa the 7th day of next August !t will be just twenty three years since the first message was sent across th3 firat ocean telegraph line. The directors of the At- lantic Telegraph Company at London tele- graphed the New York directors: ‘Europe and America areunited by telegraph. ‘Glory to God In the highest; on earth peace ani good will toward men. Queen Victoria tmmedi- ately afterwards sent a congratulatory mes- sage to President Buchanan, to which the lat- ter as promptly replied. In 1842 Professor Morse laid an experimental cable from Castle Garden to Governor's ad, and In 185) cate connection between France and England was made. Since the opening of the Atlantic cable in 1853 all the countries of the world have been connected by telegraph. —$<<—$__- —____ The contest in the New Hampshtre legislature over the question of electing a U.S. Senator was short. The non-electionists carried the day, in spite of the opinion of the supreme court, and against a majority of the republican members of the legislature. This result was reached through a combination with the demo- crats. The tnaications are that Mr. Rollins would have been his own successor had the Present legislature gone into the election. The next legislature will be elected In November, 1382, but will not organize until June, 1833. This will leave @ vacancy in the U. S. Senate, which Will be filled by gubernatorial appointment ‘The present governor of New Iampsbire, Mr. Bell, was appotnted to filla three months va- cancy arising precisely as that of 1333 will be caused. The question of the right of the gov- ernor to appoint a Senator to fill a seat which the legislature had not filled was raised, but it was decided In favor of the right of the gov- ernor to appoint, and by a democratic Senate. Hence the full representation of New Hamp- Shire will be present in the Senate of 1333, should the Senate be in session between March and June of that year. The 47th Congress will expire March 4th, 18s3, and unless there shall beacailed session, there will be no need to fill the New Hampsbire vacancy. Greenback state conventions were held in Obio and Pennsylvania yesterday. The Onto convention planted itself upon the prohibition Platform, with the view of catching the votes of the probibition!sts. The Pennsyivania con- vention reached out for Irish votes, By deciar- ing in support of the land league. Gen. Weaver turned up at the Pennsylvania convention, and he, presumab.y, is responsible for that part of the platform which calls for only such volume of greenbacks as business requires. Tnis is a decided modification of the greenback doctrine, Which has bitherto been in favor of unlimited greenbacks. Inasmuch as the volume of cur- rency {s now abundant for all the wants of business, the greenback party can, if they see fit, protest that they do not want any addi- tonal issue. Only 150 delegates were in the Ohio convention. It ts about time to write the epitaph of the greenback party—xilled by the return of prosperity. —_--re-__. ‘The editor ofa St. Louis democratic paper has bad his vanity tickled by an Introduction to Conkling. The condescension of the great man completely overcame the western editor, who wrote back to his paper and had it printed conspicuously on the editorial page a3 follows: “These savage dunces who are so eager to crow over the supposed death of Conkling are too premature. If they couldenjoy hls sparkling humor and keen satire on the sttuation—it they could hear him for an hour or two, a3 th> writer did the other day, they would think that Mr. Conkling was not only not quite dead, Dut stillin most wonderful flesh and spirit.” ‘This sudden and remarkable conversion should admonish the democratic managers to keep thelr editorsaway from Conkling. His “‘spark- ling wit and keen satire” seems to be danger- ous to democracy.
