THE EVENING STAR. | WASHINGTON THURSDAY............JUNE 9, 188l. CROSBY 8. NOYES......Editere The Evening Star has a regular, perma- nent.bona fide daily circulation more than treble that of any other dally paper pub- lished in Washington, and equal to that of all the other daily papers here added together. 6 ———————— ——_—_—_—_——SSSSSSSSSEESS THE Bax office is comnected with the Telephone Exchange Advertisements, orders for the paper by mail ard otherwise, news, or 4ny information or business can be sent day or night, free of charge. ane Persons leaving the city for the summer can have ‘THE Stan mailed tothem, postpaid, for fifty centa bo month, and the address chaoged as often as lesired. Te Advertisers—-The Doubie Sheet ‘THE Stak printed during the month of May ‘2,392 new advertisements, being the largest number ever priated In one month in th his- tory of the paper. The increase for the five months of ’s! over the correspondlag p2rtod of last year already exceeds 600, that of May alone Being 284. Advertisers will confer a favor by sending in thelr orders early for next Saturday's eolarged edition in order to secure insertion and classification. ~ Arbitration Better Than Strikes, Theemploying brewers of New York ant Brooklyn ia resisting the demand: of their striking employes have afopted what they will probabiy discover to be an extreme and unprofitabie measure. They have refused to take back former employes upon the term3 which existed before the strike. It appears to be the policy of the brewery owners to supoly the places of the strikers with new men, and tm pursuance of this policy a cablegram haa Teen sent to Germany offering employment to experienced brewers who wil emigrate to tis country. There are better methods of adjust- ing questions of wages between employes and employers than by resorting to strikes. This fact becomes more and more apparent each year. The burden ot loss entatied by @ strike usually falls upon the strikers. The loss of time alone frequently amounts to more than they gain, even where their demands are ac- ceded to. In the organizations of the workinz- men some time might be most profitably spent in considering and devising a plan of aroitra- tion for the settlement of such questions as frequently arise between employer and em- ployed. Satisfactory settlements could n0 doubt be effected by & plan of arbitration, ar- ranged upon business rules, without inflicting Joss upon either side, The Virginia Outlook It looks now as if the Virginta democrats ‘begin to feel apprehensive tna: they mid? a mistake in permitting the rea tjusters to take the politica: field two months aneia of them. The policy of keeping down pudlic interest In the coming political contest by igaorimg the Teadjuster licket s aiready a fallare. Taa re- adjuster platform has received a large skare of attention from the press, and {t ts already ap- Parent tha: the campaiga ia Virgtala 14 to be one of national interest. Ib will oversbadow the Ohio election. Many prominent and in- Muential democrats are ou'sp)k+n tn the optn- fon that It is unwise to give the raadjisters two months start In the racs. Tas day for holding the democratic convention has, how- ever, been fixed, aad the questioa of a reca- sideration with the view of suostituing an earlier date, has been votel down; therefore, at ts not likely that a change witl be made unless It becomes manifest that the readjaster3 are making more headway, a3 the sols organ- ized opponents of the fleld, than the democrats can well overcome with a late start. Tue lead- Ing democratic papers of Virgiala admit that it will require “hard work” to save ths party from defeat. Some of the clearest headed of the democratic leaders say that nothing short Of thorough organization, backed by untiring labor, can beat the readjasters. Tne ex-con- federates, who constitute the bulk of the white element of the rea@justers, are not frightened at the cry of “negro affiliation,” and it may be that the predictions of the disruotioa of the Solid south through the movement of S2nator Mahone, so frequently uttered during tne late Session of the Senate, are to ba verified at the polls of Virginia tn November. The Park Commissioners of New York have ued an order excluding bicycles from Cen tral Park in that city, on the ground, as alleged that they frighten horses. This action brings up the old question whetber those who walk or provide ‘their own motive power in some Other form have not rights and privileges equally with those who ride or drive horses? Also, whether every tnvention that benefits tkebuman family which happens, when Mrst introduced, to frighten a horse, {ato be forever placed under ban and dsiven out of use on that account? One would think that the time for interposing ofiictal obstacles to progress in aby direction had gone by, but it is evident that these New York authorities take @ differ- ent view. ——_~+e--______ ‘The conservatives of Great Britain intend to make the Irish question and the embarrass- ments growing out of It the issue of their cam- Ppaign against the present government. The disturbed condition of Ireland, the dally riots and danger of revolution make this a most favorable time for the conservatives to attempt to regain power. They hold the Gladstone government responsibie for all the evils flowing from the unfortunate state of affairs in Ireland.
